Just heard about the floods in France and Germany. Hope all Forumists are OK.
-
Well only 8-10cm in the garden during less than 24h, the plant on the rockeries are safe but i already suspect rot and for the other ones on the ground level...well hum :-\,
Certainly on the worst year in my gardening experience. All my Iris are rotten, when i say all..it's all! the slugs eat them before the floods and the standing water achieved them. I gonna invest in a flamethrower for spring and pump for summer!
The ferns are splendid ;D
-
After the problems with thunder and lightning strikes in Europe and as mentioned in another thread - deaths in Germany from flooding - tonight there are reports of Louvre in Paris being emptied in fear of flooding - so much for summer weather.
-
We're waiting for sunny autumn ::) :'(
-
Well, it's official. Today, 3rd June, here in East Kent it was colder than last Christmas Day.
-
I can see from the weather maps Ralph, it's been really warm and sunny for most of this week here.
-
It's about time David after all that wet and windy weather we've had recently.
-
On this side of the world the east coast of Australia is experiencing heavy rain with floods in NSW already and it's heading down to Vic and Tassie tomorrow!
Worst of all we've in the middle of a federal election campaign! Weather we can forgive .....
cheers

And we're in the middle of an EU Referendum campaign! Give me weather every time. Politicians? Bah!
-
I'm already fed up with hearing about it Ralph, I'll be glad when it's all over and done with. Trouble is though are we damned if we stay or if we leave?????.
-

Probably John, but's that the reality of politics ::)
-
Today was horrible, we had the worst floods i've ever seen in the areas

-
Wow! Horrible, to say the least Yann! It looks really bad.
I hope the weather it will soon improve.
-
it's raining again, damn :o
few kilometers far from home, the underground is underwater in some stations.
is it the same weather in UK, BE and DE? Belgium seems to have floods too.
-
Seems you have got it down south. We have had very nice and warm summer weather the last week - almost too hot. Fog today though but better tomorrow again with slightly cooler temperature.
-
Yep, i don't imagine how the alpines looks like in the garden :'( Hopefully house is safe.
-
Flash floods in London yesterday. No flooding here in East Kent but we had a dramatic thunderstorm last night which knocked out our broadband router. Fixed it this morning, fortunately it was only the power adaptor.
-
Badly need some rain here. Even got my ears sunburned yesterday.
-
Badly need some rain here.
Do I remember you saying that last November/December/January/February/March David? ;) ;D

Germany is a bit prone to floods, as many rivers no longer can overflow without doing damage. That said, I had drained most of my pond to do a cleaning and in the last ten days, it is not only full again, but overflowing into the already saturated garden. That's about 1 meter of rain in a week! The Rhein is high, but not over its banks. We do have a few flood plains just South of Cologne.
Clearly, our weather patterns have changed and will continue to do so. We are forced to adapt...on all levels. There is little else the individual can do. Invest in appropriate clothing. Pork-bellies down...Wellies are up.
-
It has rained here only once since 1st May. Today there are storm clouds over the southern uplands, but not a drop here by the coast. The meconopsis are not happy....
-
Do I remember you saying that last November/December/January/February/March David? ;) ;D
r
It's not a phrase I'm over-familiar with Ashley!
-
David if you need water i can throw over the Channel free water jar ;)
I also heart on radio that south part of Germany suffer of bad weather and storms.
I keep wondering which weather July will reserve...
-
I was watering the garden from 21:30 to 22:30. The meconopsis are growing and flowering well but I have to keep a close eye on the seedlings. Now out for my evening slug/snail hunt !
-
The weather has one adventage:
We needn't pay a fee for the public swimming pool.
We can use our basement. :P
Don't worry, we have a strong pump. ;D

How things change ! We went to Scone on Saturday for the Potfest show. The temp was 9°C and damp. By the time we reached Branklyn it had risen a few degrees and had been raining, however the garden was looking wonderful with the Meconopsis, Nomocharis and orchids in full flower. By the time we got home at 20:30, it was bone dry and 15°C so I had still to water the garden.
-
Now whole Bavaria is drowning.
But I bet. In July we will get a 6-weeks-drought with temperatures nearly at 40°C. :-X

Hi Tom,
Had to Google that to find out that it was a ceramics show rather than anything botanical ;D

Garden was getting too dry but now it's been raining for two days and some roads in the area are closed because of flooding. I think it's wet enough now. Will someone please turn off the tap.
-
I see that this coming weekend's Aberdeen Highland Games have been called off because of the rain. Ian opines that therain will last all weekend.... cheery soul that he is. Tap definitely seems stuck on here..... :-X

Unusually for the west coast, we seemed to have missed the worst of the weather. Some badly needed rain but it only lasted a day. Yesterday on the Mull of Galloway it was wall-to-wall sunshine, a slight breeze and a temp. of 18°C. Sitting on the cliff top terrace of the cafe with a coffee and a piece of lemon icing ginger bread overlooking the sea was extremely pleasant. Then a walk round the RSPB reserve followed by a rum and raisin ice cream. Someone has to do it!
The weather has been unusual in that the N.E. and E. are usually warm and dry in Summer whereas we west coasters usually get soaked. It has been all change the past 5 weeks.
From my selfish point of view I am quite content with this !
-
For my part of Europe (the Cologne basin), the weather has been changing on what may be a permanent basis. Our summers were always wet to begin with, but, typically, June began the dryer season. Not any more. Hot summers no longer occur, as we are lucky to get 2-3 weeks of truly warm weather, when 20 years ago the summers were 6-8 weeks of glorious weather. OK, things are changing and it makes me wonder, why am I gardening at all any more?
Roses are a disaster, any plant that dares to bloom before July will look a shambles. I am seriously considering giving-up Hemerocallis hybridizing, as they simply get worse with each year. Between the wet and wind, as well as the snails and insects, the joy is gone. Again, I rarely see a good flowering plant before July, if at all. Bearded iris are on my out-list, as well, which I will dearly miss. I just cannot justify a tunnel and I doubt the solar energy will be enough for most cultivars. I've given-up my rock-garden, as it is never dry enough any more. I can plant in pure gravel and things will still rot.
What does thrive is my Acer program. Flowers about the right time, between the end of winter wind and the first spring rains. They handle the wind and lack of light, produce seed and thrive on too much water. Easy to prune and keep in shape. Also, although we do not think of flowers with this group of trees, they are often constasting to the foliage and the subsequent seed is quite joyfull.
How is this affecting the rest of you? Are some plants becoming relegated to pot culture, while others are simply elliminated? I know some areas are now suffering from drought, rather than flood.

At this very moment we are sat in the car with a thunderstorm going on, if that wasn't bad enough it is hammering it down with hailstones, it's supposed to be summer for crying out loud.
-
Thunder and heavy rain here too. Noticed the first flower on Acis autumnale yesterday ???

My sympathies. But, as someone who gardens in a location and altitude where wet and windy summers are normal, be assured that there is still lots you can grow. Whilst bearded Irises may be out, Himalayan plants (for example) love summer rainfall. And alpines are fine provided you can give them a suitable sloping position sheltered from the prevailing wind.
I do grow roses, though perhaps not to your standards. Single flowered varieties tend to be more weather resistant.
I can't grow runner beans though :(

Hi Triatan,
it backs up what I've said before about how good it is to see things on this Forum which I might never be able to grow but can see someone else growing well.
Jamie,
I hope you don't get too discouraged and I hope you continue breeding daylilies - you've made me appreciate the "spider" types more by showing your own hybrids which I quite like (but sadly have no chance of importing!)
cheers

from a chilly Central Victoria where we won't get into double digits today!

I can't remember when was the last time I had to water the plants growing in containers outside. It's raining almost every day for weeks (months ?) now, we had serious flooding in the area two weeks ago. This wet weather really favors slugs & snails and they have a preference to graze my cultivated plants rather than all the wild plants just besides. In particular seedlings seem to be one of their favorite meals :(
However, some plants like this weather, my young Eucomis bulbs are growing better than ever with this daily watering and some more difficult seeds germinate much faster and with much higher germination rate. Just need to move the pots with the seedlings to a safe place once germination starts rather than growing another juicy meal for the snails.

Sadly it's not usually that exciting Fermi - more a constant drizzle!
-
Tristan,
that was all more musing than action, for me. I do wonder how others are coping with this caprice. Almost 150cm of rain in about 6 weeks is record breaking for Cologne, and we are an alkaline clay soil on my side of the river, which means it doesn't drain quickly. Mecanopsis won't grow, here.
Fermi,
fortunately, my daylily programm does encompase some later blooming strains and I've always selected for dense flower texture and strong scapes. It is largely the increased insects and molluscs that pull the cherries off the cake. I'm adding some Sarracenia and Nepenthes to help combat the flying bugglies and they are fascinating plants in and off themselves. Against snails and slugs, I rely on the birds, which do help a great deal. Considering a pair of ducks!
In 10 years we may have gone to an arid desert, for all I know. Is that positive thinking????

Two tree peonies absolutely flattened by the wind today, can this really be June? I blame the EU meself ;D

I think the hot air output from Westminster has considerably eclipsed that from Brussels lately.

Yeah that's true ; :D

Yesterday at Loch Doon the temp. was 9°C.

Crikey- that's more like Loch DOOM, isn't it?
-
There can be an average of a 6°c temperature difference between Ayr and Loch Doon. However, when the sun shines it works the other way. The Loch is approx.700 feet above sea level and 19 miles from the coast, which can account for the difference. In Winter the difference can be much greater.
-
It chucked it down earlier today, but it's nice and sunny now. Wish it would clear up in Belfast, it's interfering with the cricket :(

It's too hot...

It's too hot...
Really? Damp and cold here - I've had a busy day - watching Le Tour de France on TV - under two fleecy blankets!
-
High 20s and very humid. Worse tomorrow apparently, up in the 30s. Hate it!
-
Hmm, that IS too hot!

That's cool Ralph. We have a week of what you would call 38C coming up.

28C this afternoon here, very sticky. Will be watching the stage 15 highlights tonight so no clues please.

Exactly the same temp here yesterday David, at midnight it was still 22c but then it dropped to 19c and is stuck there on this grey day.

Reached a scorching 15°. Not even warm enough for my Livingstone Daisies to open ! If you watched the Open Golf at Troon, that has been our weather. Friday was so miserable, we watched a video in the afternoon
-
While it's great having some nice sunny weather at long last, does it have to be this hot! It's supposed to be 32c here in Lincolnshire tomorrow :( way to hot, especially when you are having to work.

Beautiful sunset tonight.
