A small group of 16 members from the AGS Norfolk Group travelled by train to Scotland on May 20. In three packed days we visited six gardens. On May 21 we visited three gardens the first of which was Branklyn Gardens. This is a small selection of pictures that I took. Pictures of the others will follow later.

Branklyn is such a fabulous place. I visited about this time last year and was absolutely charmed - and really friendly staff too! So much more character than most NT gardens in England.

I quite agree Tristan, the staff were really good, friendly and helpful. It's one of the few NT gardens that I would choose to go back to. Of course the proliferation of blue meconipsis (and punicea) which are so difficult to grow for us may have something to do with it, but there were treasures round every corner and several good Dysosma/Podophyllum too ;D

We spent our first afternoon at the garden of Henry and Margaret Taylor near Dundee and not far from the sea. A garden just bursting with alpine plants.

How marvelous to have this record of Margaret and Henry's beautiful garden. It is not a large garden by any means - but the planting gives a feel of a much larger space and the range of plants is second to none - and all perfectly grown, of course, as one would expect from such experts - their propagation skills are just the best, too!

I was a little taken aback at first as I had not realised Dundee was in Norfolk. Then I worked out that Norfolk AGS must be out on a trip. Where to next, I wonder?

Alan - a group of Norfolk AGS members have been on a Scottish Adventure (sensible folks!) - they also visited Branklyn Garden in Perth - David's excellent photos from there are in this thread.... at the beginning.

I think the "un-named clematis" is most likely Clematis x Cartmannii 'Joe' ( or at least one of it's close relatives! ) This hybrid plant was first grown over here by seed raised from Joe Cartmann in New Zealand by Margaret and Henry and named by them to honour Joe. Fantastic plant.
