Title: Uvularia
Post by: JohnnyD on May 08, 2016, 11:37:07 AM
Since Uvularia is a rhizomatous perennial in Colchicacea, would it be accepted as 'bulb' for show purposes?

Not according to the wording of SRGC Show Rule 15  -

"Classes for bulbous plants include corms and tubers. Judges should exclude rhizomes and Orchidaceae but may give liberal interpretation to plants coming under other headings. They should look for established plants"

But there are immediately anomalies. For most purposes, gardeners think of "bulbs, corms, rhizomes and tubers," as a grouping. To exclude rhizomes is to exclude the vast majority if iris species and hybrids for instance. There are relatively few which have bulbs, fewer with tubers, or more accurately, tuberous roots. Judges may have discretion but that can cause confusion for exhibitors.

So do books, catalogues, data bases, many or most Show schedules.

Quite - and exhibitors should ask the Show Secretary for clarification if they are in any doubt.  There is of course a divergence between what are generally accepted as geophytes and those plants accepted into the  Bulb Classes of our shows.  That's life!
