Title: Hymenocallis 2016
Post by: jshields on April 27, 2016, 11:30:35 PM
Hymenocallis liriosme from Texas (my #1848) is blooming in the greenhouse today.  This one is not hardy outdoors here in Indiana.

It's at times like these that I realise - and must confess - that my understanding of USA geography is sadly  lacking -  I need to get it into my head that Indiana is much further north than Texas...... :'(

Indiana is less than 1000 miles (1600 km) north of Texas.  I have heard that people sometimes make the drive in just one very long day.  The climates in Texas range from the humid, almost tropical Gulf Coast to near-desert in West Texas and south along the Rio Grande river in the very dry, hot Big Bend country to temperate High Plains in the northern parts of the state.  Most of my H. liriosme have come from along the Gulf Coast region.

I have had a half-dozen different accessions of Hymenocallis liriosme.  I tried all of them outdoors in the ground here in Indiana, and only one collection survived the first winter.  Most years I get a few seeds from hand-pollinating the one hardy accession; I usually give them away, since I am supposedly cutting back here.

After waiting many long years (from seed), Hymenocallis harrisiana has finally put forth a few delicate flowers:
