Title: Lysichiton - Growing Advice
Post by: johnw on April 19, 2016, 09:04:42 PM
Two years ago March I successfully dug a good clump of Lysichiton seedlings and planted them in heavy soil in deep 3" pots.  They grew well and persitsed right into the autumn.  They were then heeled into wood chips in a frame and all 64 died over the winter.   This year the same treatment and 18 of 32 survived.  I want to plant these in several gardens but fear at such a small size the slugs will walk off with them.  Any suggestions on how to treat them in larger pots?  I have seen some garden centres setting larger pots of L. in pans of water, guess they either sell them before they die or they lose them as did I once when I tried that. Nobody sells them locally of late and given a plentitude of seedlings in my bog it would be nice to get them around, sizeable ones are viirtually impossible to dig as roots go straight down to Ushuaia.

I have seen them for sale here standing in trays with water. Some plants are quite big. I will guess they can stand in shallow water during the winter also. My plants in the garden do stand in very wet soil and shallow water.

I'm sure I've read somewhere that Lysichiton have been added to the UK banned species list (maybe in the last 'The Plantsman' )

L. americanus likes it wet. It does spread along stream sides given the chance.

We have no problem growing them in wet spots, by streams and in bogs with heavy clay. It's pot culture that is the problem.

They peter out in peaty bogs.
