I have just spoken to Harvey's Garden Plants.

Their snowdrop event will be on the 21st January 2017.

This will be the week BEFORE Myddelton. There are no talks planned for next year.

I wonder if Roger Harvey reads this forum?  Because he has followed the suggestion made by Brian Ellis when discussing the date of next year's Myddleton House sale:

Perhaps as it is the day that Roger Harvey normally has his sale he will have it a week earlier to avoid the clash?

Or is it just great minds thinking alike?

Although the Alpine Garden Society have not made public the date of their 2017 Snowdrop Day (beyond stating that it will be in February), I notice that the website of Monksilver Nursery indicates that they will be attending on Saturday 4th February.

The Alpine Garden Society are advertising their 2017 Snowdrop Day in this month's newsletter.  It will indeed take place on Saturday 4th February 2017.  AGS members can book now but non-members must wait until October 31, 2016.  This has been a popular event in previous years which may make it hard for non-members of the AGS to get tickets.

On the bill are talks from John Grimshaw (unspecified), Joe Sharman ("Autumn Snowdrops" again) and Vojtech Holubec ("Snowdrops in the Wild").  There will also be a Q&A session.

Edit:  I forgot to mention that the venue will be the same as last year, Lilleshall National Conferencing Centre, Newport, Shropshire TF10 9AT.

After much discussion  decisions have been taken.....

.......takes place in the Baumhainhalle of the park! This is great because all exhibitors who wish may be accommodated in the approximately 1200 m² of exhibition space indoors. Other new features:
- There is a cloakroom with plants park, where you can park his acquired treasures
- There are  Boller carts that can be borrowed against a deposit at the park entrance for transporting
- There is seating in the exhibition area
- There is a catering in the foyer of Hall - but of course you can support the plant show in-house stall  or the kiosk at the cottage also in the café

Date not fixed yet for next year, I don't think, but  the first New Zealand  Snowdrop Day has just been held at Prue Harper's place and has gone very well. It was well attended and lots of folks - many known to  us in SRGC - had a grand time.
One of the speakers was Denis Hughes of Emerald Hughes fame.

The Dutch Sneeuwklokjesgala will be held on 5th February 2017 - though the website is not yet up-dated  - http://www.sneeuwklokjesgala.nl/ (http://www.sneeuwklokjesgala.nl/)

Matt Bishop will be the speaker at the event -
he will give 2 brand new lectures on the  day at about 11.00 and 14.00. Besides that he will take some of his own snowdrops for sale.

It seems Gerard Oud  plans to auction some of his own registered yellow  finds, open to all, closing the week after the Gala, according to his Facebook comments.
For info: Gerard Old, Tel .: 0228 - 591 300 Mobile: 06-23359738, Email: gerardoud@tele2.nl

Gerard's 'drops will be  G. nivalis  'Gold Fever' and G. nivalis 'Springs Gold'

'Gold Fever' (- which was first  mooted to be called Bucaneve Gold)

edit to add   "G.nivalis Gold Fever will be auctioned in 2017 - The other G nivalis Springs Gold, will be auctioned 2018 because it needs to be registrated officialy first. And 25% of the highest bid will go to the foundation that fights against ALS!"   ( ALS is  Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis )

The Mid-Anglia AGS Bulb Sale in 2017 is on Saturday 19th August at:

Fullers Mill Garden
West Stow
Bury St. Edmunds
Suffolk
IP28 6HD

I only discovered Fullers Mill Garden earlier this year, although it is less than an hour's drive from home.  It's a lovely garden with lots of unusual plants in a beautiful riverside setting.  And it's open to the public three days a week: http://www.fullersmillgarden.org.uk/ (http://www.fullersmillgarden.org.uk/) .  I presume the sale is on a Saturday, rather than the usual Sunday, because the venue is open to the public on Sundays.

There is always a good selection of snowdrop bulbs on sale at this event, although lots of other bulbs also.

I am pleased to announce the shaftesbury snowdrop days morning speakers will be

Tom Mitchell , his talk is 'Extreme snowdropping, adventures in search of wild snowdrops '

About an ongoing series of travels attempting to see and record photographically all species of Wild snowdrops across their natural ranges. The journey so far has taken in a dozen countries, hundreds of thousands of miles and all but one of the currently recognised snowdrop species.

The talk will be a whistle-stop tour through Wild Galanthus, illustrating some of the immense natural variation present in the genus , with a few stories from the road thrown in.

Alan Street is our second speaker ,the title is 'Every last drop '

A look at the recent snowdrop mania , why it has happened, who is responsible, where it is going and how, if at all ,it might end !

Tickets will be on sale from hopefully Mid October onwards  (Pam is sorting out her daughters wedding at the moment )

I've just had a phone call confirming that there WILL be snowdrop sales at the AGS Snowdrop Event in 2017, just as there have been in every previous year when this event has been held.  We think possibly that all the available sales table places have already been booked and this lack of further availability was mistold to Paul when he enquired, perhaps by an AGS administrator unfamiliar with the event structure.

The number of folk likely to attend both an English and Irish event are limited enough not to make this too much of an issue, I think.
Title: Re: Snowdrop Events in 2017 - Dates
Post by: Alan_b on October 22, 2016, 12:03:25 PM
No, Maggi, I wasn't suggesting it was an issue but thinking how times have changed.  A decade ago we had the (now defunct) Galanthus Gala in the UK and that, I think, was it for snowdrop events that weren't for a select few by invitation only.  Now there are so many public events in the UK, Ireland, Germany, Belgium and the Netherlands that it is almost inevitable that some will take place on the same date.

Edit: I've now remembered the RHS London Show in February, which has been an 'unofficial' snowdrop event for many years (although recently threatened by the RHS mucking about with it).

It is indeed remarkable how  many of these events there are now - and at least so long as one can afford the ticket price for some, they are open to many more people.

Details of the HPS Galanthus Group "AGM and Study Day" arrived in the post today.  The venue will be the same as last year (Chedworth, Gloucestershire), giving participants the opportunity to visit the other of the two gardens if they came in 2016.  But whereas last year the event was held on the Sunday immediately after the Shaftesbury event, this year it is 8 days later on Sunday 19th February 2017.

The two talks in the morning will be:
"The origins of the Diversity of Garden plants" by Julian Sutton
"Species Snowdrops" by Jim Almond

In the afternoon participants can visit either the garden of John Sales or Cerney house Gardens.

The event is to be held on Saturday 18th February at the Godolphin School, Salisbury, Wiltshire.  It's open to members of the CGS Snowdrop Group and each member is allowed to bring one guest (subject to availability).

After refreshments and snowdrop sales at 10:00 there are two talks:
'Meet the Galanthophiles' given by Jennifer Harmer
'Never Waste a Bulb' by Chris Horsfall

In the afternoon there are visits to Westcroft and Heale Gardens.  Paul Barney may have been too late to get a sellers' slot at the AGS event but he is amongst those selling snowdrops at this one.

I cannot remember if we've had this link before - but was just reminded of it by DingDong so here it is.... a page where gardens will open with snowdrop displays - keep an  eye on it for updates :
They say their Snowdrops page has the most extensive list of place to see snowdrops in Britain for 2017. Details will be updated shortly

Copied from another thread....
I've just got the 2017 programme for the Mid-Anglia Group of the Alpine Garden Society.  The talk scheduled for Sunday 12th February is

"  Eddie Roberts "Paintings of Snowdrops (and the influence of the exquisite and perplexing paintings of Jan Breugel the elder)"
Eddie poses these questions:-- "Did Breughel paint Galanthus plicatus in Belgium c1600?  How did Holland's most famous flower painter tackle snowdrops?  Why are snowdrops missing from Rosetti's portrait of Janie Morris?  How do the Glasgow Boys tackle white flowers?"

Meetings are held in Birdbrook, Essex and I thought that anybody nearby with an interest in snowdrops in art might wish to attend.  I'm not sure about the protocol for guest entry but if anyone is interested send me a PM and I will find out.

On Sunday 12th and 19th proceeds will go to the Priscilla Bacon Lodge Hospice.

Our Tea Room will be open serving soup, light refreshments, home made cakes and drinks.

I imagine this is partially to do with what is actually there and partially to do with how active and persuasive the local NGS Representative is.  Is Wales represented at all (Scotland has its own scheme).

Certainly if you love drifts of snowdrops there are plenty, once planted as seperate clumps, over the years they have gradually spread (and been helped by the gardeners), Sir Nicholas also has some varieties planted beneath his nut trees and in various places around the estate.  It's a lovely garden and the Bacons have reinvigerated it again, the stumpery is just a few years old and an absolute joy.  As you say not far from John Foster and Mike Broadhurst.

If anyone was thinking of going up to the RHS Halls for the Early Spring Plant Fair (February) Show on the 14th/15th February, we have just been made aware by the RHS that there is to be a 'Late Event' on Monday 13th February from 6-9pm, and we understand that this will just be a normal selling thing - £5.00 admission (they are now charging admission to members as well as non-members for each day of the show!!).  I know not that many people go to this now, as there are so many other things to go to, but just wasn't sure if everyone else was aware of this too?!?  :o ???

The RHS London Show in February used to be a popular event for snowdrop enthusiasts and still attracts many seasoned galanthophiles.  But the RHS seem determined to wreck the event by messing around with it.  I cannot beleive that charging members for admission will be well received.

Gerard's 'drops will be  G. nivalis  'Gold Fever' and G. nivalis 'Springs Gold'

edit to add   "G.nivalis Gold Fever will be auctioned in 2017 - The other G nivalis Springs Gold, will be auctioned 2018 because it needs to be registrated officialy first. And 25% of the highest bid will go to the foundation that fights against ALS!"   ( ALS is  Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis )

As an added incentive to come to our snowdrop event near York on the 18-19 February, we will have a plant of Galanthus Dryad Gold Sovereign with 2 flowers (although they may be over by then) to auction on Sunday, with proceeds going to the Anthony Nolan Trust. This may be your chance to get one of these coveted snowdrops without having an ebay audience to bid against. Just think - you'll be bidding against Yorkshire folk!
As well as the gardens open for the Snowdrop trail on both days, a nearby garden at Devonshire Mill, Pocklington is also having a snowdrop opening for the NGS on the Sunday.
The auction will be at 1.30 pm on the SUNDAY 19 Feb, at Primrose Bank, and there will be no postal bids.

I think it's a pity that Gail Harland has not (AFAIK) found the opportunity to do something similar with her book.  I suspect many galanthophiles would enjoy reading this book but (unless they pay close attention to this forum) remain unaware of it.

It  did seem  unfair that we hadn't mentioned Gail's book again now the snowdrop season has started, Alan, so I've done just that in the January thread!
Mind you, with the number of readers of the threads  where it has been mentioned in this forum I think more will already have learned of it than will be  gathering on 4th February   ;)

A little late - apologies - but for anyone in Kent this weekend the Plant Fairs Roadshow is holding a winter event at Hole Park on Sunday 5th February (details on link below). This is a picture of an early form of Galanthus elwesii - often starting in early December, but still in flower now this year - which has made a good colony in our garden. Nothing special as Joe Sharman might say 🤔 but... Let me say a little more about it. It came from the great plants-lady Kath Dryden VMH in her Manavalins list many years ago, so holds significant memory for anyone who knew Kath well (including in times of crisis, when she was a staunch friend). So we are calling it Galanthus elwesii Kath Dryden early (for sake of a better name), and will have some strong bulbs for sale at the Best of Faversham Market this Saturday - http://www.faversham.org/events/events.aspx?p=11011430, (http://www.faversham.org/events/events.aspx?p=11011430,) and the Plant Fairs Roadshow event at Hole Park on Sunday - http://www.plant-fairs.co.uk/events/, (http://www.plant-fairs.co.uk/events/,) and at our NGS Open Day at Copton Ash on Sunday 12th February - http://www.ngs.org.uk/gardens/find-a-garden/Garden.aspx (http://www.ngs.org.uk/gardens/find-a-garden/Garden.aspx)…. plus quite a few other snowdrops of interest; along with a range of other Kentish growers.

I appreciate that, Maggi, but the rules for naming plant cultivars preclude names that are too similar and anyway, the name 'Kath Dryden Early' would imply that it is an early form of the snowdrop named 'Kath Dryden'.  The less personal 'Dryden's Early' might do as an alternative.

I found myself sitting next to Susan Watson this weekend.  She very gently took me to task for suggesting earlier (prior to Maggi's post) that there might be no NGS gardens in Wales opening for snowdrops whereas there is this one.  And she mentioned others.  I imagine you would find at least some snowdrops still out if you were to visit on March 15th.

Paul Barney of Edulis  has arrived safely at Mannhei for the Scheeglockchentage Im Luisenpark  and is all set up - here are a few pix from Paul of the  hall- which I think looks lovely - and you will spot  more than "just" snowdrops and also another well-known snowdrop seller's stand- Avon!

Not a snowdrop event but a general announcement from Blacksmiths Cottage Nursery on Facebook :

Blacksmiths Cottage Nursery

Due to other commitments the nursery will not be open to the public this year. We will only open for specialist events, but our plants will be available at a selection of Plant Fairs. The wildlife gardens and cafe will have restricted openings, please see Shorelands Wildlife Gardens for more details.

Weird place, when l've been there I was never sure if it was nursery that 'did' wildlife or wildlife set-up that 'did' plants. Either way in my view they did neither particularly well.

From Ruben Billiet: The countdown can begin:
Saturday August 19th 2017 from 2pm
Annual Bulb Sale
Fullers Mill Garden, West Stow, Bury St Edmunds IP28 6HD

The guest nursery is “Billiet and Boens Bulbs” from Belgium. Wim and Ruben will be bringing an eclectic range of bulbs and bulbous plants for all seasons and all garden conditions.
Friends and family welcome. There is plenty of parking and free refreshments.

Wishing the NZers all the best for another successful event in 2017 !

2017 Day is, I believe, this coming Sunday,  12th August  - preparations made at Ashburton!

Update

"Change Of Venue For Autumn Snowdrop Lecture

Thank you for purchasing a ticket for our Autumn Snowdrop Lecture with Melvyn Jope.

We have decided to change the venue of the lecture. We had originally planned to hold the lecture at the nursery as usual, however there has been a bit of confusion as to whether it would be here or at the Earsham Wetland Centre (as our Spring snowdrop day will be at Earsham)

We thought it would be easier to move the lecture to Earsham as parking, café facilities and toilets are better than at the nursery. Earsham is only 15 mins from the nursery so will hopefully not add much time to your journey. There is a lovely river walk and lake with animals, as well as farmshop and small café.

Lunches will go ahead as planned for those who have booked it. Please bring your tickets with you. We still have some tickets to send out which we will be posting tomorrow. If they don’t reach you in time we will have everyones name on the list when you arrive so it is not a problem.

Postcode for Earsham is NR35 2AF. Earsham is just outside of Bungay and the centre has brown tourism signs from the A143 road.

We look forward to seeing you on Saturday

Many Thanks,
