Title: Narcissus autumn southern hemisphere
Post by: Anthony Darby on March 20, 2016, 08:22:04 AM
The first of the autumn narcissi are out here in Auckland. Narcissus obsoletus and N. elegans. The first two pics are of N. obsoletus from southern Spain and sown May 2011. These first flowered in 2014. The last two pics are of N. elegans, also southern Spain, and were sown March 2012, and this is the first time it's flowered. These came from near Malaga, and were originally labelled N. malacitanus. I have another pot labelled N. malacitanus multiflower, but they are a little behind this pot.

It's been a long time coming. This flower only opened today, so will enlarge and the corona will change colour. So different from obsoletus, which only throws up a single stalk with a flower. The elegans have paired leaves as well as the flowering stalk, and three or four flowers.

As the days go by the colour of the corona changes in both Narcissus elegans and N. obsoletus. Here are some more recent photos.

Last year this pot of Narcissus viridiflorus, grown from Rafa seed, flowered later than my other pot. This time, while this one is just coming out, there is no sign of shoots in the other pot.
