Title: Tecophilia-how do you germinate?
Post by: Jan Jeddeloh on January 27, 2016, 04:48:32 AM
I managed to get Tecophilia seed from both NARGS and AGS (haven't gotten my SRGC order yet).  I've planted the NARGS seed deep and put it outside already.  I know Ian plants all his bulb seed in the fall but I don't have that option now.  So should I just plant the rest of the seed and throw the pot outside or should I give the seed a period of warmth before putting it outside or in the fridge?

Any advice on coaxing this little beauty to germinate from exchange seed would be appreciated.

Thanks,
Jan in Portland, Oregon, USA

I'd be included to continue as you have - sow deep and leave outside / in a frame to get the cold and then wait...patiently...maybe for some time. You may get some germinate this spring, maybe next spring. The usual advice is to keep seed pots for at least 3 years before giving up on them, and then empty the contents onto a bed as a mulch as something may spring up as a surprise. Good luck.

Jan,
check out my method by following this link http://www.srgc.org.uk/bulblog/log2006/020806/log.html (http://www.srgc.org.uk/bulblog/log2006/020806/log.html)

I would add that as the seed has been stored for a long time it will be dried out so I would give it a soak in water overnight before sowing.

Thanks Ian.  I gave them a 24 hour soak and sowed them hoping for the best.  I so covet that gorgeous flower.

Now if my SRGS seed would just arrive.  I have visions of them languishing on some Seattle inspector's desk over the hot air register.
