This Ipheion has been in my garden for a number of years and has been totally neglected as can probably be seen from the number and size of the flowers. Bearing in mind the not particularly good quality of the pictures could anyone suggest what it might be please?
-
Hi David,
From what I can see, I think it's the normal Ipheon uniflora.
Beware if you try to remove it - I had a somewhat similar clump entangled in the roots of a shrublet - I wanted to get rid of both and am now still struggling with the remaining bulbils that keep popping up everytime I think I got rid of the last one.... >:(
-
1. thanks Maggi, I shall write a hundred times 'Ipheion is spelt I-P-H-E-I-O-N ::)
2. Thanks Luc, I will leave it where it is and give it some TLC. By the way having Googled it I see it can be uniflora and also uniflorum or is one singular and the other plural (as Peter Cook used to say 'I would've been a judge but didn't have the Latin')
-
Well, Google being what it is, if you were to google Ipheon, you'd get plenty results for that too... doesn't mean it's kosher!! It would have been uniflora when it was a Triteleia, or a Brodiaea, or any of the other things the taxonomists have called it over the years :P
You were close enough that we know what you mean though, and that's always a good start!
Luc... I 've just looked again at your post... you better do some lines too! :-X
-
You're a very tough teacher Maggi - we do our best you know... :-\ ;D
-
Luc, it is cold and I am in a bad mood... Lily our little dog has a sore ear and a sore paw... I am worried for her.... perhaps I was too severe on you.... especially since my own spelling is not always the best :-\
You need only write half the amount of lines!
-
You are too kind Maggi...
-
Favouritism!
-
I find the best TLC for Ipheion uniflorum ( :)) is Roundup. >:(
Though I also grow (deliberately) 'Froyle Mill,' 'Charlotte Bishop and 'Alberto Castillo' and I adore `Rolf Feidler' though I think that's a different species, isn't it.
I do hope Lily is better soon. Our lad has just come from the garden, one of the many wilder parts, covered in cleavers seeds so he's not wildly popular at present.
-
Lily says thanks for your kind words, Lesley :-*
David, I am shocked at your accusation :o I would not stoop to such behaviour, even if Luc were not from a home of Chocolate ::)
-
Luc - I made good experiences when I replanted my Ipheion last year. They even survived mold affection
in the place where I stored them wrongly. Their leaves are present since last autumn and even some
flowers found their way out in winter.
Maggi, give Lily a big kiss from me - hope this helps
-
Maggi - this time it's me having to correct you.
I'm not from "a" home of chocolate, I'm from "the" home of chocolate ;D
Thanks everyone for your moral support in my battle against Ipheion uniflorum
-
Ipheion .. would have been uniflora when it was a Triteleia, or a Brodiaea, or any of the other things the taxonomists have called it over the years
The taxonomists have called it all sorts and now thrown out Iphieon as a genus completely. Some of it is now Tristagma, so Ipheion uniflorum is now Tristagma uniflorum. Ipheion dialystemon (we discussed on another thread) is now Nothoscordum dialystemon. There has been quite a considerable revision of the family Alliaceae in general. Interestingly, (all? some?) genera previously in Amaryllidaceae are now in Alliaceae.
So Narcissus and Galanthus are now onions.
And little blue jobs Scilla, Hyacinthus etc are in Asparagaceae.
This and other interesting moves can be found at Kew monocot checklist

Tristigma uniflorum or Tristigma uniflora?

;D ;D
It's TristAgMA uniflorUM (no one said it had to rhyme!)

I am a Scotswoman with red hair... it is in my genes to argue. :-\.....what about the Swiss? :D.... wonderful chocolate that I fell in love with when only a very little girl.....of course, it is that love which has turned me today into such a very big girl... ::)
-

Thank you, Thomas, she will appreciate that . :-*
Diane, what a wonderful knowledge you have on these name changes.... I am impressed that you have such stamina to keep up with it all.... seed exchange duties urge you forward, I am sure. 8)

Bad enough...... but.....

NO! really? No I know I can't cope :'(

Us Belgians, we're very modest Maggi, so we gracefully admit, the Swiss do their best... ::)
But hey, they have the Alps, that should do. The best chocolate is ours ! ;D
(And I know a big Belgian chocolate manufacturer who produces hundreds of tons of Lindt chocolate per month.... ::))

NO! Oh dear... in that case, I apologise and retract my previous statement.... is nothing as it seems? :-[ :-X

Hi people:
I for one thing would like to see on what basis Ipheion has been merged into Tristagma. Separation among them and several species of Nothoscordum has been difficult, the only thing that proved consistently coherent was the seed coat but this is obviously not easy by simple observation.
As for the reviewers, only Dee Snijman is well known. Will keep on inquiring, hopefully it is not another musical chairs thingy as in the past.
Regards
Alberto Castillo

I'm afraid not Maggi - it's a hard world out there... ;D

So much of these reclassifications are , as you describe, Alberto, more a case of musical chairs than anything more lasting : this is why I tend to leave labels and my "recognition" of a plant name as it always has been... untill I really feel the change is permanent and I must finally learn the change. I am always more worried about how the plant is growing than what its name is!
-
Maggi, I believe the dutch found the procedure making chocolate out of the beans,
but it seems the Belgian make the best now... ??? ???
But here's some advice from a Dutchman:
Put "Eat chocolate" at the top of your list of things to do today.
that way, at least you'll get one thing done!
:D :D :D :D :D

Perhaps, also.....a tattoo ::)
-
Thanks Maggi! I've got it.
And here's something very important (for gardeners) to remember:
Chocolate is cheaper than therapy ------- (Good for Scots and Dutch! ;D ;D)
and you don't need an appointment.
-
Maggi, I don't think I should be on this forum as I don't like chocolate, and never eat any or anything that has chocolate in it. I can't stand the taste of it.
Will I get banished now ?
-
Michael, dear, darling Michael... banished.... certainly not.... now there is all the more chocolate for me! I welcome you even more!
-
I wonder if it worries the taxonomists that apart from Forum members reading this thread, because Diane had drawn our attention to the name changes, thousands of gardeners across the world who actually grow and love the plants will happily go on calling the plants what they have always called them in blissful ignorance.
I shall make a sign tomorrow and shall paint on it the following and erect it in my garden.
THIS IS AN IPHEION uniflora BECAUSE LUC HAS TOLD ME SO. SO SOD OFF ALL YOU TAXONOMISTS.
There, I feel better now, and after my first pint in about an hours time I shall feel better still ;D

I hope your sign will read "This is an Ipheion uniflorUM etc"
otherwise all will have been in vain .... ;D
Enjoy your pint ;D

It's really through doing the seed exchange that I have taken an interest in the names and name changes. OK, we probably don't agree with what the taxonomists do, but few of us really understand why they are doing it. The most important thing is that we are consistent in our use of names, otherwise we have the same plant with 3 different names which leads to confusion! It's the taxonomist's job to sort our which we "should" use, according to their rules. But big changes of family/genus structure like Amaryllidaceae going into Alliaceae are another story and I suppose a lot is down to new ways of looking at relationships, by DNA analysis. But it's still massively subjective.
But from here one seed exchange compiler takes a rest from that job for a few months and might look for some shows to attend ...
and maybe some pub lunches and afternoon tea and cakes to enjoy there ...

Tristigma uniflorum or Tristigma uniflora?
;D ;D
It's TristagMA uniflorUM (no one said it had to rhyme!)
;D ;D
Greek MA ending which I understand is male or perhaps neuter, rather than Latin A, which is female. As in ArisaeMA candidissimUM or OnosMA nanUM

Some posts from this topic have been moved to a new thread in General Forum ,
"Vices, Daphnes and hybrid Lewisias....how's that for a thread? "

Don't know just what's happening here. This and the last post (about Michaels Lewisias) are apparently going to the new topic but when I make a reply and post it, the old Ipheion topic still comes up, but without the posts. I suppse I'd better go right back to the Forum Index and access the new one from there.

Don't know why you are having this happen, Lesley.... your machine just likes to play tricks on you at times, I think.
This afternoon, while editing some photos, after about six pictures, all of a sudden each picture I clicked on to open came up already resized... without going to editor.... the machine was resizing the original file... very odd. Ian could not find why it had happened, but it was only in that folder and not elsewhere. I could still get the full size files from the camera card, as it happens, but it could have been a real pest. No idea how it started! Blasted machine... its like a taxonomist, it can change its mind at a moment's notice. :P

or a woman! ;D

Now David, that's a most provocative comment and others may smack your fingers. I'm going to forward to you and Maggi an email which was sent to me this morning. It explains why, as a beer drinker, you should be VERY WORRIED.
-
Michael, dear, darling Michael... banished.... certainly not.... now there is all the more choclate for me! I wecolme you even more!
Maggi,
Given the hassling over spelling at the beginning of this thread..... one should be very careful with one's own spelling (see quote above), particularly when one has misspelt that which the world revolves around.... i.e Chocolate!! :o
One of the humorous emails that is going around has the final line....
Save the World. It's the only place that has Chocolate!!
Fine sentiment indeed!! ;D ;)
-
Quite right, Paul, I must pay more attention.... chocolate, chocolate,
choclate, chocolate... no, I'll have to stop this, it's making me peckish :-X
