Stuck what to do for your holidays? Like somewhere warm? Well here's a suggestion. Between 22 and 27 June 2016 the annual NARGS Conference will be held in Steamboat Springs, Colorado hosted by The Rocky Mountain Chapter. A chance to explore North Western Colorado in prime wildflower season with hikes and trips to steppe, montane and alpine plant communities.
Tours of both Denver Botanic Gardens and Yampa River Botanic Park. Book sales and signings.
Could you ask for more??????!!!!!

NARGS Annual Meeting: Steppe to Alpine
Steamboat Springs, Colorado - June 23-27th 2016
Steamboat Springs will offer NARGS members a chance to see a beautiful and less famous side of Colorado in what Mike Kintgen describes as a botanical paradise of contrasting habitats. Most of the hikes and trips will focus on elevations ranging from the rich and varied steppe flora up to the interesting montane and subalpine areas (depending on snow cover).
The meeting will convene in Denver on June 22 and and picks up the afternoon of the 23rd in Steamboat Springs 170 miles to the northwest.
Please see Mike Kintgen's article "Steamboat Springs and the Northern Colorado Rockies" in the Summer 2015 Rock Garden Quarterly for a description of the floristic areas surrounding Steamboat Springs and what attendees may hope to see when they attend the meeting.
More details will be posted as they are available. Registration for the meeting will commence early in 2016.

In view of the cost and distance, to get the most benefit from this conference for non N. Americans, I suggest you base a longer visit around it.
I have attended 2 of these conferences; 1 in Ottawa, and the other at Snowbird in Utah. Both I have attended with friends, adding exploration trips before and after. This also extends the season, as we all know getting the flowering time right is difficult. In Ottawa the cypripedium were hardly in flower for the conference trip, but a week or so later backtracking on a Greentours route through Ontario I saw many hundreds. The Utah conference I went out early, Snowbird alpine flowering timing was perfect, the conference included a 3 day trip, in my case to S. Wyoming, not far north of where the 2015 trip is based, and then an optional post conference trip to N. Wyoming, where we were a too late for Aquilegia jonesii flowers but saw many others.
I have been lucky with weather, and not had to hire my own transport on these 2 trips, but have done on other visits without any problems. You will have to join Nargs, for at least a year, to take part in the conference, and it gives you another seed exchange too.
-
A note from NARGS : It costs non-members more than members to register ... and if you are a non-member, you get membership as part of your package! Of course some people will not want the journal or Seedex, so they can opt for "do not send" for the journal.

I'm told that the winter issue of the NARGS Rock Garden Quarterly is a special "Northwest Colorado" issue with seven articles about the flora of the area. (Projected mail date of Dec. 16, 2015.)
-
We visited Steamboat Springs in 1999 and made a point of seeking out the Yampa River Botanic Gardens' rock garden which was newly planted - it would be interesting to see it again.
cheers

Hi
You mean this one
[attach=2]
I am the one on the LHS with the blue hat here
[attach=1]
in the Bighorns.
In the Snowys there were 2 Brits together.
-
Nope, not that one. My husband and I were guides in the Snowy Range. Sorry you missed that one.
-
Sorry don't have a group photo for the Snowys. Enjoyed the natural hot springs bath there before breakfast in the teepees on the "hotel" lawn, and the deer wandering through the grounds while we were chatting in the evenings in the marquee. Hot swimming pool an acquired taste?
The flowers on the trips out were great too. Snow melt Erythroniums, gentians, Moneses .....
Thought of an after conference trip back there if I come next year.
(altered my previous post photo, apologies)

Hi Maggi
the Registration form has still not gone live :-\
I'm hoping to go but only if I can get on the post conference tour :)
-
Their Facebook page says the online booking should go live today - 13th - but bear in mind the time difference - their day is just starting!
They have a mail-in form on the site now it seems, if you haven't got the paper version - but I can't find it.
-
Hi Maggi Date has just changed on the Registration Page - "Registration Form scheduled to go live on 16 January" :'(
-
Had trouble even finding that , Julia, even though I was logged in!
Thanks to a friend for help!

At the bottom of Maggi's link is the link to the mail in form.
Or you can download it directly here:

Hi Rick,
Yes I would of done that but I waited as requested to fill in the web registration form.
Now it's too late to send a form by post just wondering if you have an email address
for registration person?
If you do could you send it to me I can try that way. Have contacted Mike but his away until end of week. Getting fed up with try to register as have sat by my computer for 3 different days!
-
On this page https://www.nargs.org/steamboat-springs-registration (https://www.nargs.org/steamboat-springs-registration) there's a suggestion to contact Lori Giesecke..... you need to be logged in to open the internal link for that .
-
Note from NARGS : Online registration has been postponed until Jan 16, 2016. thanks for your patience. In the mean time we have added a pre-conference tour to the Big Horns June 17-22.
-
For anyone who might be on the fence about the pre-Tour to the Big Horns .... SIGN UP before it's sold out. This is a fabulous place for alpines: Eritrichiums, Kelseyas, Aquilegia jonesii, Polemonium viscosum, not to mention astragali and oxytropis and hymenoxys or whatever they call it now. You just won't know where to point your camera!!!
-
NARGS still having technical trouble :
"Online registrations been delayed to continue to work out some bugs. It is now hoped to open Jan 20th or around then. Thanks for your understanding and patience."
-
Hi Registration has just opened and working beautifully - just booked.
Can't wait - so many beautiful flowers to see and people to meet 😃

Pre and Post Conference Tours - "Plantsman’s Tour of Wyoming” https://www.nargs.org/plantsman%E2%80%99s-tour-wyoming (https://www.nargs.org/plantsman%E2%80%99s-tour-wyoming)
Note: The Post Conference Tour is sold out. The Pre Conference Tour is open.
June 17-June 21 and June 27-July 1: 5-day tour
Description:
Big Horn Mountains, WY: “Plantsman’s Tour” – led by expert leaders including Panayoti Kelaidis and Michael Bone on Post, Kenton Seth on Pre
Trip Overview:
June and early July is peak season for flowers throughout the Rockies, but never more so than in the State of Wyoming, which may resemble Colorado in rectangular shape, but has a fraction of the human population (although a good many more antelope)…
The Pre-Conference Tour will depart from the Denver Botanic Garden early the morning of the June 17 and return Tuesday, the 21st. Not only does the Pre-Conference Tour have the possibility to see Kelseya uniflora actually in bloom, but also Fritillaria pudica and many of the spring ephemerals that will be past during the Post-Conference one. Participants should plan to arrive in Denver the evening of June 16. The Post-Confernce Tour departs from Steamboat Springs after visiting Mike Kintgen's garden on Monday, June 27 and returns to Denver on July1. We will spend the first day traveling to Cody, Wyoming (which will be the base of operations for the trip). En route we will stop several times to admire the sagebrush steppe, which harbors a wealth of unusual endemic taxa. Lunch will be a picnic en route.
In Cody we will stay at Thomas the Apostle Retreat Center (link is external)—a beautifully situated complex with spectacular views of the Cody valley and comfortable rooms. We will be hosted by the Center managers, Jay and Caroline Moody—who have created lovely gardens surrounding the Center that are full of unusual native and adapted shrubs and perennials. The Center has many acres of pristine sagebrush steppe well worth exploring as well.
On the first day we will drive to the summit of the Bighorn Mountains, which are largely composed of dolomitic limestone in the area we will explore: this area is almost mythical for its wildflower displays—and there are many unusual and some very rare plants that are only known from here and a few neighboring spots: The gorgeous Jones’ columbine Aquilegia jonesii,Kelsey Moss (Kelseya uniflora) and the regional endemic rock brake fern (Pellaea occidentalis) are just a few of the gems we shall see.
The next day will be a circle drive over Beartooth Pass—one of America’s most spectacular highways which crosses many life zones and has a spectacular montane, subalpine and alpine flower displays—all of which should be at peak bloom. Here Purple Saxifrage (Saxifraga oppositifolia) has its nearly southernmost occurrence, as does purple heather (Phyllodoce empetriformis). For dozens of miles the road is ringed by a tapestry of wildflower color unequalled anywhere—a day you will remember!
A third day will be dedicated to time at the Retreat Center, optional visit to the world-class Buffalo Bill museum and hikes in the cushion rich steppe flora.
Come join us on this trip: we can guarantee you more flowers than you dreamed possible, and views to match!
Trip Details:
Price: $950 per participant
Includes: Guide, all transportation in a motorcoach, St Thomas Retreat and all meals
Group size: 20 participants
Group Minimum: 10 participants
Group Maximum: 20 participants
Physical Exertion Rating: Easy to moderate

very curious that not a peep of this on the NARGS forum-what's up with that?

I don't know - perhaps other folk find it as hard to use these days as I do? Certainly a shame - but not the first time an event has received more publicity here than in the place of origin!

Nick Courtens of the Betty Ford Alpine Garden,Vail, was a recipient of an SRGC Grant to study the great alpine houses of various Botanic Gardens in UK etc as he worked on the Vail alpine house project that was the subject of his talk to #NARGS2016.

"Loveland pass, Colorado this afternoon... Symposium super interesting, impeccable organization, unforgettable encounters, that sums up for the moment that I have the joy of living. Coming to steamboat springs this afternoon, two conferences super interesting tonight including one by Johan Nilsen, horticulturist at the botanical garden of gothenburg in Sweden, the theme: the bulbous plants of turkey, Iran: Fritillaria, tulipa, corydalis, Dyonisia, crocus, colchicum, Iris, absolutely fascinating and a beautiful scientific rigour wow!!!!😂 "

This picture is reversed. Confusing when you are on it.
They are making a strong point here that most of the speakers are youngsters, relatively speaking. Water saving is also coming across strongly as one of the reasons for having "rock gardens". In this state "at present" you cannot legally save water by using water butts. Water rights belong to someone else even if it falls on your roof.
Watched foxes going across the parking lot while we were eating on the university balcony. Very noisy hail storm during lectures. One wrecked the marquee recently. Alpines need to be tough here.
