Title: Who used to look like this?
Post by: Maggi Young on December 24, 2006, 09:33:52 PM
Okay, let's have a bit of fun with the forumists.......Send me ( maggi@bulblog.co.uk) a photo of yourself in earlier times... I don't mean half past four in the morning..I mean when you were younger !
I will post them here without any names and we'll see how good we are at guessing which spotty youth turned into which distinguished gardener ( Because we all are great gardeners, aren't we, even if we're only starting.... the fact that we're SRGC Members and Forumists shows our innate quality!!)
I'll post a couple that those of you reading all the forum pages will recognise from elsewhere, but it'll make a start, then I have a few more I have already been sent to post...Watch this space!!
Keep your photos coming in.... Lesley, have you found the one of yourself in your Shirley Temple outfit, yet?

Title: Re: Who used to look like this?
Post by: Maggi Young on December 24, 2006, 10:33:48 PM
Yeah, Mark, I think this is amusing! There were so many other things this thread could be called : "who is this daftie?"   "Where are they now" or even  "what are they now?" "guess the year" in some cases would have been fun, too.  I'm expecting to be contacted from the costume department of the big museums to see if any of these historical garments shown being worn by the forumists can be loaned for public display!!
Title: Re: Who used to look like this?

This page is being read quite a lot already... I hope we don't frighten anyone of a nervous disposition.
I only have one more pic to post meantime, so don't just laugh at the photos, send me your picture, too!
This chap looks keen in his school uniform in about 1968
[attach=1]
PICTURE SIX: Red Tie Boy
Lovely to see a chap so smartly turned out even if the tie is the colour of grannie's geranium

Very nice pics but are not people supposed to guess?
The first two is already clear from elsewhere but the rest I do not know.
Maybe some one who have met the forum members in person can guess??

Kind regards
Joakim
Title: Re: Who used to look like this?
Post by: Maggi Young on December 27, 2006, 12:46:12 AM
Yes, Joakim, I am hoping that you will all try to make a guess which photo belongs to which person, regularly posting on the forum. Most of us have not met in person so it will be quite difficult. The fact that some of us have a picture of us as we look nowadays as our ID photo with our posts may make things a little easier. I think people are waiting till there are more photos before making their guesses.
Mark, it is up to you to discover if someone appears more than once!
Herei is another photo that I have been sent to quiz you with:
this  is a female forumist and there are fewer of those, so that should make it simpler to guess!
[attach=1]
PICTURE SEVEN: Blonde Schoolgirl
added clue: is that a pure wool cardigan?

Here's the latest offering, the file has been sent titled "What a hunk!" I think it is this modesty in our forumists which is one of our best features!!
[attach=1]
PICTURE EIGHT: Smiley Hunk

added clue: another chap with a family, including two daughters, and they have the proper hair colour

Glad you think me a flower, Anthony, lots would say I'm just a big weed!
Title: Re: Who used to look like this?

I think the blond haired young lady by the car just has to be Lesley??
Title: Re: Who used to look like this?
Post by: Thomas Huber on December 27, 2006, 02:21:43 PM
The only regular forum poster I have ever met personally was Tony Goode
and I'm sure he is on one of the photos above, but I have no idea on which!

Maggi, whoever says you're a weed will be deleted from my friends-list!!!
Title: Re: Who used to look like this?
Post by: Ian Y on December 27, 2006, 03:08:27 PM
Well David, that would be telling and Thomas you are correct, Tony is one of the above, but we will not declare the identities until more of you have made your selections.
We will answer in the New Year but not until we have a lot of attempts at recognising the youthful faces above.
Come on join in the fun.... ;)

Is the third one down Simon Bates using the forum under a different name? I think the goode boy sticking his tongue out is Tony
Title: Re: Who used to look like this?

OK Since Mark has incorrectly picked me out ... I reckon red tie guy is Mark himself.
Title: Re: Who used to look like this?
Post by: annew on December 27, 2006, 06:39:58 PM
I think the cowboy might be Anthony, and the chap in the orange tie could be mark, except I don't think he's old enough? The Lady of the Poppies has got to be Maggi, and the other young lady is Lesley who doesn't seem to have changed at all ( I'll send my bill later).
Title: Re: Who used to look like this?
Post by: David Nicholson on December 27, 2006, 06:54:44 PM
So it's Maggi in the poppies is it, and I thought it was Emmylou Harris. I have a 1975 version of her Elite Hotel album and to use the phrase "she's a spitting image"

Maggi-- my guess is Anne Wright ;D
Cheers Dave.
Title: Re: Who used to look like this?
Post by: tonyg on December 27, 2006, 09:41:09 PM
I'm with AnneW on all her choices (the red tie guy is exactly the right age .. same as me!)  Now I can imagine Maggi as someone who would stick her tongue out at a camera ;D but my guess is that this is a photo taken in Neustadt ... and Thomas is so polite now (but his fringe hasn't changed much)
Title: Re: Who used to look like this?
Post by: Joakim B on December 28, 2006, 01:07:25 AM
The latest girl must be annew. The nice curls look similar :) The other girls are also picked already correct I think.!?
I will have to look back on the boys to see if I get any clue.

Tony, are you really sure with my photo ?

Keep at the guesses...some are closer than others!
I've got a dour sandal wearer  for you now
[attach=1]
PICTURE TEN: "Neil from the Young Ones"
added clue: I think this chap shows signs of being fond of butter. And are those sandals made of pigskin?
Title: Re: Who used to look like this?

ahhhhh! Sandals and socks.

He looks familiar
Title: Re: Who used to look like this?

Thomas - NO!! But I can just imagine young Chris striking a simialar pose if he didn't want his Dad to take the picture.   AND I don't think any of the others are you!!  .. are they?

I like the guy with the long hair and sandals ... who remembers the TV series 'The Young Ones'?  (Sorry - probably a UK joke  ;))
Title: Re: Who used to look like this?

Bigger hair and bigger plants in those days ;D
Title: Re: Who used to look like this?
Post by: tonyg on December 29, 2006, 09:28:39 AM
This is harder than identifying an unknown plant!  (And there is the possibility of offending several friends at the same time :-*)

I'm gonna revise a couple of guesses.  Firstly, if the tongue out chap is not Thomas (he is still my first choice) could he be Joakim?  The cowboy  - not an SRGC President surely ... but which one?

No-one has offered a name for the smiley lad sitting at his desk ... he's the right age for Tony Darby but surely such a bright lad could not morph into El Gringo?

Maggi - how many of us are in twice?   My long haired Young One bears a resemblance to Fred C as seen on the Dunblane thread.

And now I really must have better things to do :) :) :)

Tony G. - I'll just quote our school motto re: smiley boy - "It wisne me".

Okay, who's this  in 1961 then?
[attach=1]
PICTURE ELEVEN: Quiet, serious schoolboy
added clue: slightly dodgy shirt, but he still looks like a choirboy
Title: Re: Who used to look like this?

Another two, one modest little girl and an altogether more outgoing baby boy!
[attach=1]
PICTURE TWELVE: Adorable blonde
added clue: she could now be wearing furs from close to home

[attach=2]
PICTURE THIRTEEN: Naked Baby

one of the forum's finest, he could win medals
Title: Re: Who used to look like this?
Post by: Joakim B on December 29, 2006, 11:57:41 AM
Tony I used to be polite and would not in such an age pull my tonge out. Now I could do that :) Tonge by seems to be 40 or so now rather than 35 judging by cloths. Baies are all sweet and then they grow up to be......
Even sweeter :) I almost got in trouble there.
I need to have a better look to see if I can identy the girl. We have so few here!?? Most garden forum have the oposite ratio.

A bevildered
Joakim
Title: Re: Who used to look like this?

Could the girl above the baby be Hannelotte? Age and hair colour seems to match.
Could The long haird one from "the young ones" be John Forrest and his "Longer hair bigger plants" post a hint? Or even a confession?
Title: Re: Who used to look like this?
Post by: Ian Y on December 29, 2006, 12:57:29 PM
All I will say is that some of you have got some of the identities correct and others are wrong.
It is not easy to sort out the cowboys from the presidents and as for Neil from the young ones sneaking in.
Keep the pictures and the ID's coming and we will reveal all in the New Year.
::)
Title: Re: Who used to look like this?
Post by: Joakim B on December 29, 2006, 01:26:31 PM
I think the latest schoolboy from 1961 is El Gringo, fits the age and also the face might be the same.
I can not focus on more than one pic at the time sorry.
Title: Re: Who used to look like this?
Post by: John Forrest on December 29, 2006, 02:06:58 PM
Joakim, I think you are not far off getting the identity of Neil geographically but I reckon he is a little further East. ???
Title: Re: Who used to look like this?

If there is a clue in the picture, the bonny toothless (and clotheless :-[)boy below the sweet girl, must be a Dentist now!
Title: Re: Who used to look like this?

I think the curly haired on is Anne and the baby with the blue dungerees is Ian the Christie kind

The young lady is Susan Band - well I reckon it is! And yup I think the toothless babe is Sandy Leven.

The 'hunk' looks like our current Pres. to me.
Title: Re: Who used to look like this?
Post by: tonyg on December 29, 2006, 08:19:06 PM
Of course - the 'outgoing' president .... There is always a clue!!!!
And I'll side with Carol re:the 'hunk' .... that's eliminated another president from the cowboy stakes.   BUT I still cannot believe in a gun-toting bulb despot :-\
Title: Re: Who used to look like this?
Post by: Maggi Young on December 29, 2006, 08:42:07 PM
The difficulty lies with knowing which are the clues and which the red herrings!
John F. gave a clever hint with his talk of further east for our longhaired sock and sandal wearer... well, i thought so, but then again I KNOW who is who!!Tee Hee!!

And who said the clues were all with the photos? This forum is a big place!
Title: Re: Who used to look like this?

And another fine photo to task you:
This lad is shown on his first day at school, I suspect in another land from his present abode
[attach=1]
PICTURE FOURTEEN: Cute Guy
Title: Re: Who used to look like this?
Post by: Maggi Young on December 29, 2006, 09:27:15 PM
Another schoolboy... this one looks full of mischief, too!
[attach=1]
PICTURE FIFTEEN:  Schoolboy Rascal

This chap looks like a bit of a rascal but he really loves rhodos and ericaeae, and is even getting into bulbs, so he MUST be okay!
Title: Re: Who used to look like this?
Post by: Lesley Cox on December 30, 2006, 04:40:51 AM
I'm a real dunce at these photos. I'm sure about the original pic as Ian Y and the floral (hippie) Maggie (now there's a clue, talking of hips!) and I'm sure about the delectable Anne but the rest? I don't believe our Thomas would ever poke his tongue out though.

I can call foul anyway because as a down underer, I've never met any of these so don't know what most look like anyway. Well, that's my excuse.
Title: Re: Who used to look like this?
Post by: tonyg on December 30, 2006, 09:44:44 AM
OK Magggi so the outgoing president is not a dentist ....  the field for the cowboy remains open!
Thomas is sooo polite now ... but I would not put it past him to plant a red herring of his own!
The latest two .. one might be David Shaw - Carol resurfaced yesterday ... and I think I must have met the rascally one, he looks very familiar!  (I have not met David so that narrows it down!)
Title: Re: Who used to look like this?
Post by: Maggi Young on December 30, 2006, 11:29:34 AM
This presidential question, I feel I must make some clarification: the present president is a nurseryman, the former president is not a dentist but a Doctor, well, he's a civil servant but he has a PHD, the old past president is a Bulb Despot and it is the way-past-president who is a Dentist... now, does that help?

An Englishman causing trouble again, eh?

I think I would've enjoyed this more if I'd met some of you in person.  Nevertheless, this 'topic' has been interesting to say the least and I think this is what separates SRGC forum from others.

Before the answers are posted after the new year, can the 'current' photos of the contestants also be posted to give us the last chance to guess?  Are all contestants using their current/recent photos in their signature?  I don't think I see young Mr. Bond.
Title: Re: Who used to look like this?
Post by: Maggi Young on December 30, 2006, 02:54:03 PM
Hi, Fumi, that's a good suggestion, I'll get those photos organised for the end of the quiz.
I think very few of us have actually met all the "contestants". I have met a few, but I'm not allowed to answer, since I'm setting the questions!!
As a further clue to help, I can reveal that James Bond  (aka Martin Baxendale) is not one of the photos  ... but here is another recent picture of him, he's a very busy man, as you will see!
[attach=1]
Here he is, drawn by the man himself, "rushed off his feet"

In truth, I believe he looks like this

Lesley and Tony--I wouldn't be too sure about your guess.

After all remember Maggi's previously comments about red herrings.

In fact i have it on very good authority now you have relinquished your faker title Lesley  ;),that it's up for grabs again.

I learned a very good lesson when first posting on the internet just a few years ago and it went something like this.Don't believe everything you see or read on the net.

On those words of wisdom--i say farewell :-*

1  David Nicholson

Hope you are all out having a great hogmanay .... Maggi, are you there? :)  Some of us are stuck at home waiting for the midnight explosions to wake the children >:(.  At four, Amy will think it must be morning and want her breakfast :'(

So as the last minutes of 2006 fade away, Mr Sad :(, here, is still trying to work out the pictures.  Maggi - no revealing all until either:
a) everyone has voted or
b) someone gets them all right or
c) January 6th

If Neil is only a little further east than John is he still in the same county ... Ahh the Pig might be relevant here, I've seen the light!!!! ;D

So if Bonny & Clyde are David and Carol, & Neil keeps his butter in cups, which one is me?

Maggi is not having a good start to 2007 as she went down with a terrible virus on the 30th and is still battling it, I am not sure if the virus knows quite what(who) it has taken on.

Any how she sends you all her best wishes and will be back as soon as she is fit to sit in front of the PC.
In the meantime keep your guesses coming in and we will adopt TonyG's rules above:-

No revealing all until either:
a) everyone has voted or
b) someone gets them all right or
c) January 6th

I'm sure I'll be speaking for everyone when I say get well soon, Maggi, and Happy New year to everyone. By the way, I can't believe that you are rated as a junior member under your avatar, Ian, I think the bulb log should make you a Grand Master!

Anne thank you for suggesting that I should be 'Grand Master' but this is a democratic forum and we all have to earn our ranking here so I will remain a Jr. Member until I too reach post 100.

I thought it was rather quiet on the Craigton front.  Ian send love :-* to Maggi from all the Goodies - hope she is soon firing on all cylinders again.  If she doesn't get back to this wind-up game before the 5th we'll have to delay the final results a bit ... Wouldn't want to deprive her of the fun of teasing us for a day or two prior to the big announcement :)

Sorry to hear about Maggi hope she will soon be better

In guessing who is who my chances are limited as with one exception we haven't met -well physically anyway. So I am restrricted to being able to identify forum members from the small piccies shown on the forum pages. So based on that caveat and a disclaimer in case of upsetting someone here are the votes of the McEnery household:

2 Ian Y
3 Thomas (obviously still using the same hairdresser)
5 Maggi
6 Mark
7 Lesley
8 Ian Christie (as he is the only one of you I have met face to face if it isn’t him I’m in trouble!!)
9 Anne
10 Tony G
11 Anthony?
13 Dave Toolie

Ian, I promis you that knowing some of the persons named in the forum is no advantage at all. Maggies 'clues' provide a little help - but as they say 'don't believe everything you read on the web'. Maggies own clue could well have been 'Communist fisher wifie.'
No offence meant, Maggie. Get well soon. :-*

Ok, as Maggi is still in bed with the virus I will tease a bit on her behalf.

Ian you have 6/10 - not a bad score.
I will mark all resonable  attempts of at least 10 selections, I don't want to make it too easy.

Mr McEnery sir,

And I quote....'8 Ian Christie (as he is the only one of you I have met face to face if it isn't him I'm in trouble!!)'

When we walked together in the Dolomites did you refrain from actually looking at my face (perhaps because my knees were so exciting) or did you simply find the experience just TOO distasteful?
I certainly remember meeting you and Mrs M. on more than occasion in the meadows (and the bars) and I can still remember your rustic features!!!

Happy New Year to all ...and especially poor Maggi....2007 can only get better!

Kindest regards,
Cliff

I think I know who to change ... but for whom?
By my reckoning it is either another double act or an'outsider', someone who has not posted to the thread ... but thats too tricky :P
I think I'll wait for Maggi to come back and tease the answer out of me.

Hope she is on the mend .... if she does not recover soon we must all club together and buy her a bottle of tonic :)

Tony, I can see why you are so good at identifying Crocuses by the way you have tackled the 'humans'. Very impressive and thank goodness, finding no need to examine the sex organs. ;D
I'll chip in towards the tonic for Maggi. Rubbing goose grease on the chest is worth a try Maggi, if you've got any left from the roast tatties. ;)

Tony I might be good but You are still a Goode and that is obviusly better.

Anyway get better Maggi to enjoy our struggle.

Hello, Folks, I'm back! Bit unsteady on the feet, but getting to feel like I could manage a new year's toast to you all... by the way, I prefer lemonade in my gin, for your files.
So, HAPPY NEW YEAR TO YOU ALL... may the year prove a fine one in every way. I hope your plants are all the healthiest they have ever been and that the health of you, your friends and families is even better!
I look forward to catching up with your guesses... sorry... deductions.. on these pages. ian tells me he has been greatly amused. Not sure if that is a good or a bad sign for you!
Must give thanks to Ian for minding the fort while I was out for the count, also for giving the talk I was scheduled to give to the Aberdeen Group last night. He says he couldn't remember most of the rhododendron names but the audience forgave him! That boy has only bulb vision, for the most part. I well remember the day when he thought more of a rhododendron than just as a place to provide underplanting of erythroniums. Ah, well, such is gardening, i suppose. Now, I must have a look at your efforts; then there is the question of rewards ..Hmm? This'll take some thought.

You did not have an answer on 12 was that deliberately?

Hello, Everyone, sorry for the silence, I've been feeling a bit ghastly again. Ian is grateful for the silence, though, so it's not all bad, as they say.
Well, The race is tied between Tony Goode and Dave Toole; allowing for their coyness about their own photos, they both have seventeen out of eighteen answers correct. But they (and everyone else, actually) have been completely stumped by the cute little guy, now a grown-up forumist who is number fourteen. So I'm offering an alternative tie-breaker here. I want Tony and Dave to tell me WHO the cute guy is in picture fourteen, I will repeat it below AND I want to know who this chap is: He could go by the name of Ivor Biggun, judging by the photo;  he is a forumist and I wait for your guesses.

Title: Re: Who used to look like this?
Post by: tonyg on January 07, 2007, 09:37:55 PM
Now Joakim sets a poser here ... surely he got only one wrong too.  He also fits the bill as now being in another country but even allowing for his origins could 'Blackbeard' really be the cute blonde angel?  He is still my choice for now though (and he really was my first choice until the beard put me off!!)

Jacinta (my other half who has had to put up with my rambling around this test) is sure she knows.  John aka Kent Gardener is her choice and I can see why :) :)

BUT from the first pic this guy might be older than these two... what do you think Toolie?
Title: Re: Who used to look like this?
Post by: Joakim B on January 07, 2007, 09:53:54 PM
Tony at that age I did not have a beard :) so do not let that stop You.
Let Toolies non sucsessfull guess on me as 14 stop You.
I have been thinking on persons like Franz in Vienna but I do not know if he changed land. Is land totally synonymos with country? or can land be different parts of a country? I thought so and hence had David Nicolson as 14, that and that he was old on his first pic (family man and not schoolboy) but that was wrong.
I was also thinking on the hansom Dutchman in Gothenburg at least Maggi had expressed him as such. He seems to young for 14 but one never knows!??
For 14 I still do not have a clue and the new one is also a mystery :) or is he?
Title: Re: Who used to look like this?
Post by: tonyg on January 07, 2007, 10:09:10 PM
Cheers  Joakim, HOW did I forget Toolies choice for 14?.... But you posted a red herring comment earlier I think ;)

And To Mrs Maggi - classroom assistant to this thread - I will read the questions more carefully in the next exam .... I now see you want two new names - I think :)

Back to the drawing board for me.  I've got a rare day off work tomorrow I'll give it some more thought then.
Title: Re: Who used to look like this?
Post by: Joakim B on January 07, 2007, 10:14:55 PM
Since You had me as You I did not want to make people sure who was tricky or not. I do have a sweet toth so maybe it was not a red herring but just some mist to make it less obvious that it was not me but You in number 4. I have not said anything about Ivor. :)?! Am I just blowing smoke or.....
Title: Re: Who used to look like this?

Is the "hansom Dutchman in Gothenburg" really a Dutchman? I assumed he is a Swede.
Title: Re: Who used to look like this?
Post by: tonyg on January 07, 2007, 11:54:45 PM
Gerben - yeah I guess he could be cute and handsome :D but he does not look like a blonde boy!  And Lesley, I do seem to remember reading that he is Dutch by birth.

I'll go with Jacintas crush on John (OOAgent) for our latest newbie and how about Howard Clase, an the exile in a foreign land for the elusive number 14?
Title: Re: Who used to look like this?

Maggi i have no idea at all on the two unknowns.

In any case i do think the 'race' is between Joakim and Tony as i only came on the scene after they both had done all the 'hard graft'.After some thought and being a true southern man i think it's only fair if one of them wins.

Tony your answer below for both seems plausable .
Joakim any further guesses?.

Cheers Dave.

Okay, Chums, you seem to be having a lot of fun slugging it out here. I will clarify one point ; the blonde bombshell, Ivor Biggun and Number Fourteen are two different people.

And, yes, the charmer Gerben, now in Sweden, is from the Netherlands by birth. Not the right shape of face though, is it? Either of them!!

Dave, very sporting attitude; you're not just worried I'm going to bake you a cake, are you?

Great to see you are back and firing on all cylinders Maggi ... well posting all over the place anyway!

Now lets get this straight .... without your juicy clues I'm clueless.  We need a cryptic message to help us pick up the scent of these elusive blondes :)   .....  Pretty Please!

If I explain below how I got to the other answers you'll see that the answers were rarely found with the help of the pictures  ;)
1 David Nicholson - Christmas weather moans post about his son
2 Ian Young - I've seen the bright shirts
3 Thomas Huber - I've seen Thomas
4 Joakim - I'm intimately acquainted here
5 Maggi Young - Once seen ....
6 Mark Smyth - Age and keen-ness
7 Lesley Cox - I got by with a little help from my friends
8 Dave Toole - see 7
9 Anne Wright - see 7 but the curls cliched it
10 Cliff Booker - Magnificent clues from JoF and Maggi
11 Anthony Darby - age & recently mentioned being in a choir
12 Lesley Cox - Looks very like no 7
13 John Forrest - How many Forrest Medals has he actually won?
14
15 Ian McEnery - Thanks Cliff, I remember the Dolomites posting
16 David Shaw - Posted with Carol (see below) but check out Findhorn website re: cats
17 Carol Shaw - Distinctive cheekbones - see party pic in October weekend thread
18 Martin Baxendale - the uncanny likeness of course!!

Oh and I worked on the basis that they were all people who had posted to the thread :)

Well, Tony, your last point is probably the most important one except that you may be wrong in one respect------they are all forumists---they might not have posted to THIS thread !
Now, there are other clues elsewhere in the forum; they may be more subtle than you give me credit for, or they may be slap bang in your face. It's over to you again, Tony!

Thanks to everyone who has emailed me to tell me what a sweet baby young Baxendale was. I will surely pass on  your kind words to him. Now we have seen how lovely Ivi Baxendale is,(on the Cat thread) we will have fewer fears for the future of the real Baby Baxendales !
No further forward on the identity of the elusive Number fourteen, I see. And precious few opinions as to the blonde Ivor Biggun.
After tomorrow I will pronounce on the outcome of our little tests!

Maggi I think you've got us beat :'( :'(  I've looked through the list of members and can only find one more who fits the bill for number 14 - you did say the pic was taken in another country from where he lives now?  John Humphries - 'greenmanplants' was Lanark born but now resides in Hampshire  .... but having met John I can only say he aint such a cute guy now ;)  .. and nor am I come to that!  All my other attempts (David Shaw, Joakim, Howard, MartinB & Sandy) have met with a polite rebuff.

I'll stick on John Finch (KG) as a potential blonde. Although its not easy to tell from his photo, I cannot argue with my wifes opinion of him :)

It's been a good game ... another version next Christmas?  but please, NOT 'Whose Cat is This?'  ;D

Number 14, begorrah!
Title: Re: Who used to look like this?

David that does look like a hint to look West across the water.  BUT I only know three forumists of that origin.
Mark Smyth, but he is red tie guy and having spoken to him he sounds like he grew up where he now lives.
Paddy Tobin, Paddy MUST be Irish ..... but he does write "I am not so single minded myself and am as happy in the vegetable patch" so he could be a candidate for IB
Which only leaves Geebo ... whose erudite posts suggest he might not be inclined to join our silly game :-\  But of the three he is the only one I cannnot rule out!

Come on Maggi put me out of my misery ... for surely I am the last man standing, looks like everyone else gave up (or knows the answer!)

I must say I do not have any clue either so that might be equal to given up.
I agree that there is similarities between last blond with John Finch but I also thought it had some similarity with Maggi but then she shoud/would not adress herself as he should/would she???
I do not get any help by the lack of clues so I do not know!! Or they are above my head.
Give us a less subtle hint or put us out of missery :'(
Joakim

Joakim, though my hair has grown darker nowadays, in my youth I enjoyed long, bright coppery chestnut coloured hair, a real redheaded girl, so I could never have been a cute blonde boy!
You are right, we must have an answer to this quiz:

At last! I was growing old here, waiting for you to work this out!
Jacinta is correct, our cute blonde cabbage grower is: John Finch, Kent Gardener and SRGC 00Agent.(wait a minute, isn't that three people?)
So, Number fourteen is Geebo; now resident in Ireland but born across another stretch of water, sur le continent . Guy, who makes such a sweet young face in his baby photo now is the gruff bearded chap of his avatar and the handsome husband of Maureen, as seen here in  this pic from his seasonal greeting to us all.
[attach=1]

There were clues to Geebo all over the place, can't remember the half of them myself, now! The most recent was in the Hellebore page, I think, well, flowering now, early January, perhaps!
So, I declare Tony to be the winner, albeit with direction from Jacinta, without whose help he would still be searching.
There will be another hiatus while the prize is properly prepared, I need to get into the loft for this!
Well done everyone for your valiant efforts to sort this out. Especially Joakim and Toolie who made great attempts. Amazing how many of us had time to spare over the last few weeks, isn't it?

Well done Tony
I must appologize for not having a picture of my self in the competition, but here in Portugal I did not have any.
Putting my son in and say I used to look something like that is not fair or?

Great entertainment :)

Maggi: Time is to take not to have :)

Joakim, again you are correct, time IS to take not to have.
It gives me pleasure to see you having good times with your wife and son, enjoy every day with eachother and have a life full of fun, it is all we could ever wish a happy child.

I am glad you have been entertained by the pictures, I hoped it would prove amusing.

I am a little disappointed that we can not have "whose cat is this" for next year I was going to enjoy that one!

It was good entertainment Maggie, thankyou.

Lets people know that whilst you don't have to be mad to be in the SRGC .....

When you get the time it would be good if you can prepare a post showing all the 'before' pictures together alongside the 'now' pictures.

David, would that lead to another competition ' who has suffered most the ravages of time'  ;D

At last John....you have come up with something I can win without competition!!!

From Neil in the Young Ones to Victor Meldrew in the twinkle of an eye!

I know I've been quiet....but I might come out of dormancy soon.

Behind every successful man there is a good(e) woman ;)

Perhaps we next year should get someone to airbrush all the hair off our current photos .... or perhaps not :D

Ladies and gentlemen, I have pleasure in announcing the winners of this season's SRGC Forum Quiz Competition.
In keeping with the tradition of the old Miss World contests, the results will be announced in reverse order, so, in fourth place is David Nicholson, who merits an Honourable Mention for considerable effort. .

In third place, winning a Bronze Medal for diligence and perseverance, is Dave Toole.

In second place with a Silver Medal for intricate investigations, is Joakim Balogh and  our winner of the premier award showing, if more proof were needed, that most men are useless without their wife's support, is Anthony Goode, who wins a Gold Medal for spectacular sleuthing.
Well done, Friends, I am proud of you all and congratulate the winners and all those who entered into the (scotch whisky) spirit of the competition

One last thing, I spoke of prizes, then make annoucements about Medals----where are these fabulous medals, I hear you cry? Well, this is the SRGC Forum, we are in virtual reality here, so the actual medals are, sadly, also only "virtual" BUT, I am pleased to be able to show you all the actual  SRGC Award Cards that have been prepared and signed by the Judges, to commemorate the success of the aforementioned prize winners :
 so, for David Nicholson,
[attachthumb=1]

for Dave Toole,
[attachthumb=2]

for Joakim Balogh, who did not submit a photo of himself and so had no "bonus point" for knowing who HE himself was, unlike the other contestants,
[attachthumb=3]

and for Tony Goode and for Jacinta,
[attachthumb=4]

Congratulations form Maggi and the Bulb Despot, your self-appointed Judges!

Brilliant. I've watching and reading. I'm hopeless at crosswords so had no chance with the clues. I did get me of course

Well done to all the prize winners and I think Tony well deserves the top gong.
I was really impressed by Tonys' observation; what really did it for me was his recognition of Carol's high cheek bones.
No wonder he is so good(e) on plant features.

Thanks Maggi and Ian for such a wonderful way to start the new year. It's been great fun. Congratulations to all the prize winners - even Dave - for their sustained efforts.

I've actually learned something here. Even though all his posts are ended with "John," for some reason (OK so I'm getting on a bit) I was convinced his named was actually Kent Gardener. So sorry John.
Title: Re: Who used to look like this?
Post by: KentGardener on January 14, 2007, 08:48:41 AM
Hi Lesley

you are not the only one - Kent Gardener is just my 'SRGC 00 Special Agent' name (the name arose on Yahoo groups because I live in Kent and garden at every opportunity - it was only later that my brother pointed out the name was rather 'James Bond' like).

In just the last month I have received emails addressed to 'Kent Gardener, 'John Gardener', 'John Finch' and even 'Geoff' (!) - I am still waiting to be called 'Kent Finch' - but I will answer to just about anything.

cheers

John

In Scotland, we refer to someone well-known as "weel-kent", so a familiar person is "a weel-kent face", so John has become, in our household, "weel Kent Gardener".

Wow, I'm so impressed with you guys for sorting out the who's who! I gave up very rapidly. Like David I'm really impressed that Tony recognised me because of my high cheek bones!
Title: Re: Who used to look like this?

As I'm coming up to Glasgow in October I can check out those cheekbones for real  ...  if you'll forgive my cheek ;)

It was fun, thanks to Maggi for refereeing the event (and Ian for covering when M retired hurt.)  BTW - If you weren't all so good-looking I'd never have figured it out!

And you guys wonder why I have a picture of my dog for my avatar instead of me??   ::)

I don't think I'll ever think of you guys the same again.... particularly you Cliff!!  ;D  :o
