Title: Journals Wanted
Post by: john bunn on August 01, 2015, 05:14:40 PM
HELP !
Can anyone help me get the following SRGC journals :-

     The numbers are 1 to 8 - number 11 - numbers 14 to 18 - number 21 - number 29 - and number 32.

These journals are required to complete my set up to the present day.

I have been in touch with Glassford Sprunt but unfortunately he was unable to help. If anyone can help with the above I would be most grateful.
I am prepared to purchase any of the above and can be contacted by e-mail or telephone:-

             My e-mail john_bunn@hotmail.co.uk      or Tele. No. 01642285233

I appreciate your time in looking and look forward with your help to completing my set.
Thanks

Good luck, John - hope someone is able to help.

I suppose if one were desperate to have the chance to read all the journals  on paper, one might consider printing off the pdf files from the website  :-\   I know of several folk who have printed off all the weekly Bulb Logs of Ian Young and of the IRG !  :o

I had a letter reporting death of a spouse a few months ago and offering a complete set to give away but after consultation it was decided that no one had facility to stock them and I sadly had to write to say they were not needed.  If anyone is willing to keep them, next time I get an offer I'd be happy to refer....

Earliest start at 38. But I will keep a look out if anyone hands them into the group.

Sadly there is very little call for the printed journals now and storage for them is difficult.  There have been occasions in the past when we have posted offers of them only to have no reply. Recently we have been able to match up a an offer of journals in central Scotland with a Canadian member who was willing to pay the not inconsiderable sum to  have them delivered  and a donor who was willing to package them and have them sent off but it is not always so simple!

I'd certainly be interested in any future offers of journal collections as I'm sure they'd be a mine of useful information. Space is always an issue but I can always seem to find room for another shelving unit for printed material.

Just in case anyone new to these pages is not aware, the SRGC has a digital archive of all its Journals  (except the very latest ones, which are reserved for paid up members) on this page:

http://www.srgc.net/site/index.php/extensions/journal (http://www.srgc.net/site/index.php/extensions/journal)

There is also an Index, which you  can find here :
http://files.srgc.net/journals/SRGC_TheRockGardenIndex1_133.pdf (http://files.srgc.net/journals/SRGC_TheRockGardenIndex1_133.pdf) and which will be updated soon

I just want to assure people that issues that rare and coveted were not among those that made it to Canada recently. Mine do have a wealth of information, and will excel at helping winters pass, but are not National Treasures spirited away.

For back issues of SRGC and AGS I might suggest you contact VIRAGS via their website in Victoria.  They have a booksale at major meetings and at one Winter Study Weekend we landed a full run of the AGS and the SRGC Journals from start to then present save for a half dozen issues.  For the missing six ones I got on the SRGC waiting list and they arrived within a few years.  Those were the days when you could board a jet home carrying those Journals as carry-ons, trying to look thoroughly unstrained!

Postage could be steep.

Dear grackle,

fear not - as a Canadian member you would anyway be as entitled as anyone else to have even the rarest journals.   The whole ethos of the SRGC is the open sharing of information - why else would all our back issues be available online?  It would be a travesty if there were to be any restraint placed upon the  distribution of journals offered by members !

I've just had a letter from a retiring member in Kidderminster saying they have many copies of back issues that they would like to donate if we are interested.  If you are interested in paying the dispatch costs, please send me a pm and I will put you in touch with them.

Thanks

Christine
