Title: Who knows this little bug?
Post by: JohnnyD on July 17, 2015, 11:30:34 AM
Not a plant but found on a perennial geranium leaf when pruning.
I have no clue as to what it is!

That is a Ladybird  larva, Johnny- or more correctly a pupa at that that stage. It may belong to a  Harlequin Ladybird (Harmonia axyridis )  http://www.edphillipswildlife.com/harlequin-pupa03 (http://www.edphillipswildlife.com/harlequin-pupa03)

I'm not bright enough to tell  for sure -  I know that the Harlequins are generally brighter at all stages than the native Ladybirds - someone will help out ....

I agree with Maggi.

It used to be a notifiable species but not sure of its current status.

Thanks Maggi.
It has been duly reported to the Harlequin ladybird survey.

May be worth  giving the web address of the  survey : http://www.harlequin-survey.org/ (http://www.harlequin-survey.org/)

Your photos show them as having an extraordinarily high shine, John.  :o

Good idea Maggi.
You are right about the shine. The dark one was quite immobile - so perhaps it was just lacquered! ;D

It is completely heart warming to discover that, despite all the headlines of strife and mayhem appearing in the newspapers, there are a substantial number of like minded crackpots, viewing the world in a different light, and filling the threads on Scottish Rock Forum.
Long may it continue. ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D

Hear hear, Johnny - after all, before the forum became an unimaginably HUGE  searchable resource for plant information for everyone, it was intended as a relaxed meeting place for our world wide membership to congregate for a "chat" and company to give a home to every SRGC member, no matter where they are in the world - to come together in a social situation and be able to converse and discuss in the same way as they would do if meeting up  personally.
There may be  some people who would do that WITHOUT having a laugh and a joke, or asking after the health and welfare of friends and family and who would discuss plants and plants ONLY - but, THANK GOODNESS - there are some lovely friendly souls here who know the benefits of a relaxed social intercourse.  More power to them, I say!!
