Gardening Scotland 2015 Help Needed
Stan da Prato, Ian Christie and their team of helpers are now getting everything ready for the SRGC display at Gardening Scotland. This is a major event and a great chance for us to show off our plants and promote the Club to the general public.
Over the course of the weekend - Friday 29 to Sunday 31 May - thousands of people will see our display and we try to speak to as many of them as possible. Can you help the Club by giving 2 to 3 hours of your time and enthusiasm on one of these days? In return I will send you a free pass to Gardening Scotland for that day.
Please e-mail me if you'd like to help. Early bird replies will get first choice of time slot. Slots are: 9.30-12.00, 12.00-14.30, 14.30-17.00 hours.
-
Any help that can be offered to the SRGC Gardening Scotland Team - see Liz' post above- will be most welcome.
The Show looms large on the timeline now - it will be open to the public from the 29th to the 31st May 2015.
-
See all show details and ticket info on the main Gardening Scotland website -
http://www.gardeningscotland.com/main-features/ (http://www.gardeningscotland.com/main-features/)
Our own Beryl MacNaughton will be one of the experts on hand in the RHS Gardening Theatre and there are a huge number of attractions to this show - quite apart from what we imagine will be yet another stunning display by the SRGC Team !
You can read about last year's event, HERE (http://www.srgc.net/forum/index.php?topic=11295.0)

Yesterday Rob Graham and I checked over the elements of the stand in the hut at Binny Plants serenaded by a male dunnock. Rob has taken some of the rock work away to reglue it to its backing boards. There is a fine display of wild hyacinths in the Binny woods just now.

There must be a mix of excitement and trepidation for you, Rob and the Show Team right now. It's an odd time, isn't it ? You are raring to go but held at the starting area, ready to get to the blocks! :D
I still have the shakes at the very thought of gluing stones securely for the display - I just hope Rob knows how much the rest of us are in awe and appreciative of the efforts of the Show Team :)
Will be wishing you all a smooth progress through the build and planting -and looking forward to seeing the finished display in all its glory!
Bon Courage!!
-
Thanks Maggi though the notion of me at the starting blocks is somewhat unrealistic if not bizarre - perhaps the donkey derby?
-
Stan, the smoothness and elegance of the final result of every SRGC stand is such that only an analogy with super athletes seemed appropriate. ;)
(By jove, sometimes I even impress my self with my reasoning!!) ;D

We have spent quite a bit of time this week looking out plants to the show everything is later than usual lifted Meconopsis and Primulas lots of others and we have several big Celmisias on the window of out sit-ootery ( a posh name for a porch) we have plants in the big glasshouse my new shelter put them out if its sunny bring them in shelter from the wind still some will not make it not sure what the stand will be like but without doubt Stan and the team will be waiting on Monday for my arrival to get going, a few pictures getting ready. cheers Ian the Christie kind

Look forward to seeing Ian's and other people's plants arrive at Ingliston tomorrow. Today Rob and I loaded our cars at Binny for the short drive to the show hall. We set up the boxes which are the foundation for the display then put on the box for the rock ridge in the middle. We then add the stone panels. All on similar lines to last year though the plants will not be all the same. A few pieces of stone have parted company with their backboards so will be re-glued tonight.

Got to pity those poor vehicles being asked to carry all that "stuff" - just as well it wasn't too windy, eh? :P
You and Rob are making very good progress or so it appears to me.
It is so interesting to see how the process goes. I can never work out how the "skeleton" affects the finished display, so I doubt these work in progress photos are demystifying the finished effect at all.
Well done both!
-
Looks great Stan and Rob the van is loaded so should maybe arrive earlier than planned, cheers Ian the Christie kind
[attachimg=1]
[attachimg=2]
-
Drive carefully, Ian !!
-
....Ian did indeed drive carefully despite an allergic reaction to all the oil seed rape now in flower. After unloading his van we got on with planting avoiding the metal structures of the Alnwick gardeners who are setting up a display of poisonous plants next door . Liz Mills then brought a car full of small colourful alpines followed by a delivery from Ayrshire members.

[attachimg=2]
[attachimg=3]
[attachimg=4]
[attachimg=5]
-
Rob had repaired missing rock work so we could plant the ridge mainly with Ian's celmisias then worked on the north corries and damp side. It will not show in the photo but the planted sections are not quite finished as they need levels etc. sorted, labels added and pots disguised so plenty still to do

It will be most interesting to see where that Coke can appears in the final stand......! ! !

It will be most interesting to see where that Coke can appears in the final stand......! ! !
That rather depends on how successful your campaign for sponsorship is, doesn't it? :D

Hmm, it might take more than just one can to persuade them Maggi.

Congratulations to all involved! Soooooo well deserved!
-
When they left the display on Thursday afternoon Stan and the Gang thought that is was the best we'd ever staged, so the Gold was very well deserved. And when the judges came round today to discuss the display, we learned that we were only 1 miserable point away from a Premier Gold! How frustrating in one way, but also exhilirating since we'd made so much improvement over last year when we were at the bottom end of the Gold standard.
Huge congratulations to the whole team for a tremendous effort - including those who provided plants, there were about 20 members involved in staging the display. Today the public were full of praise and many showed a genuine interest in learning more about our plants and how to grow them. It was a grand day to be alive.
-
It must have been a super day for you all at Ingliston - have to say it was not so much fun here, waiting till Ian Christie's message about the result in mid afternoon « Reply #43 on: Today at 02:29:35 PM » !!
We were hanging in limbo, wondering what had happened!

Sorry, Maggi, for keeping everyone in suspense. I really must buy a Smartphone and ditch my antique mobile (about 10 years old now). Didn't manage to find the big boss, Stan, today to give him the news - his car is in the garage so maybe that's where he was. But I have e-mailed him with the good news.

Great display and well done to everyone. Plants were looking so lovely.
Home with lots of goodies, think I will have to dig up some grass to find some more space.

Hello, I hate to think that tomorrow (we) take everything down then bring all the pants back in the garden in hope we have them for another year, cheers Ian the Christie kind
.....wears them for a year in his garden - I did wonder what the aroma was as we built the stand!
-
A worrying thought, Stan - and makes you, Rob and Co. all the more deserving of our admiration for your achievements, eh? !!
Got a query today asking if there was a full plant list of the plants on the display? Does such a thing exist and if so could it be published to go with the photos?
-
Strange how some plants attract more interest than most. Having spent much of today on the stand, I can confirm what Ian C says - there was a huge interest in Meconopsis plants generally, and in Mec. punicea 'Sichuan Silk' in particular, and of course we had a big clump on our display. The seeds were doing a very good trade, especially the 'fine seeds' in packets with coloured pictures on the front.
The whole stand is a huge credit to the hard work done by everyone during the week. Liz Mills in particular seems to have driven round most of Scotland at least twice in recent weeks picking up plants for the stand!
-
We did a quick count of labels and there are over 130 ie that number of different types of plant - the actual number of plants is higher as there is more than one pot of some species. We would have to make up the list which could be done tomorrow but it would not be on this forum until the show is over
-

Quite an impressive number , Stan!
I think a list would be of interest, even if posted here rather later.
In future, would a list printed of the plants in the display be something that visitors would be interested in at the show? I think it is something that happens at some shows?
-
Possibly but that presumes we do a similar stand in 2016. Several people are unlikely to be available next year so there will have to be a follow-up meeting at some point to discuss 2016. It is virtually certain the club will have a presence at Gardening Scotland but what form that will take is less certain.
-
Hello Maggie, My wife Ann spent time on Sunday morning to make a list of all the plants in the SRGC show we will work together to check all is correct and then send to you, cheers Ian the Christie kind.

Ian, your wonderful wife, Ann, the Kindest Christie Kind , is an all round gem of a woman and worth far more than her weight in gold! Bravo Ann - and thank you for going to all that trouble. I think that there will be many interested in the list, here in the forum and beyond.
-
I was hoping to see the stand on Beechgrove Garden, but the weather was so bad here that it interfered with the broadcast and was unwatchable. Such a pity.
Did the garden feature?
-
Can't you get the programme now on i-player, Arthur? Yes, the SRGC stand did feature briefly - Jim McCollwas pictured admiring it, and commenting that all the plants were well-labelled and that that was to be expected because after all this was the stand of the Scottish Rock Garden Club who are specialists - that's more or less a quote!
-
The list of plants used on the club stand at Ingliston helpfully written out by Ann Christie gives an idea of the number and variety. 142 species and cultivars. Eventually a typed version will be available but there are other things to catch up with first.
-
Maggi
Not available on i-Player I record the programme to make sure I do not miss it. The recording sadly was impossible to watch.
