The Forrest Medal has been won by this quite amazing Gentiana acaulis from Peter Semple

Well done Peter - I think this may be the plant which won a Certificate of Merit at the Highland show in Nairn last week - it is even better now!!

This fine Cypripedium 'Ursel' is grown by Cyril Lafong ( I think the cultivar is 'Ursel') )

snaps of the winning plants - Peter showing just how big his gentian is, Cyril's Cypripedium Ursel which was the other contender for the top award and received a merit cert. and the best orchid award the Charles Simpson trophy. Cyril also won the Buchanan challenge cup for three rare or difficult plants in class 3. Ian Kidman won the Diamond Jubilee award in a competitive Class A for six small pans. Your photographer won the Buchanan memorial rose bowl for 6 big pans in class 1 as well as the Don Stead prize for most points in the bulb classes and another merit cert for Andromeda Nikko.
-
Tommy Anderson won the Henry Archibald trophy for three rock plants in different genera in class 2. John di Paola took the Darling trophy for three rhododendrons in class 4. Brian and Shelagh Smethurst won the Donald Memorial Trophy for a Scottish native plant with Asplenium trichomanes and the best plant in a small pot with their Junellia. Sam Sutherland's Primula rusbyi was best primula in show taking the Joan Stead prize.
-
Watt Russell had the most first prize points in the open section so received the Crawford Challenge Cup. Club treasurer Richard Green won section 2 taking the Wilson trophy and also a bronze medal. Elspeth Mackintosh brought the very rare Primula sherriffiae from RBGE and it duly received a certificate of merit. Sue Simpson received a merit cert for her fine Lewisia tweedyi. For some reason the Don Stead card for bulbs appeared next to a cowslip.

My word, some truly super plants there! A great spread of winners among the exhibitors too!

now a quick tour of the benches. more views of Class A
-
some closer views of the three plants in Cyril's class 3 entry for rare and difficult plants. Then Sam Sutherland's hybrid Ranunculus parnassifolius raised by Margaret & Henry Taylor.
-
moving round the corner -Scotch corner you might say -as it includes the classes for Scottish native plants, then Australasians, then cushions notably white saxifrages and the start of the primulas on the second bench.
-
more primulas then androsaces then ranunculaceae
-
onto the second side of the second bench with trilliums then bulbs in variety and arisaemas
-
Lewisias and another view of the giant gentian then onto the third bench with plants from specific parts of the world and ericaceous plants
-
more ericaceous then orchids and then first plant in the catch all categories
-
more of the catch all category then mini gardens then section 2 which did not have may entries but still had some very nice exhibits
-
more on the RBGE Primula sherriffiae and also three forms of what is now Primula bullata staged by David and Stella Rankin.
-
so many well grown plants in that show!
-
judging -two teames of three is the usual system briefed by the show secretary who is also available to deal with any queries. Some find it hard to leave the Jaffa cakes; all were soon eaten. The show secretary and assistant total points, write certificates and organise the trophies,
-
as the show opens to the public the club plant stall is soon attracting purchasers as do the nurseries-these events allow people to buy plants not available in most garden centres
-
The catering team at the Glasgow show is rightly famous for their delicious eats so deserve a section all to themselves.

and more

Merriment as Peter calculates that as his last best in show was 30 years ago he will need to keep showing until aged 180 to catch up with Cyril's tally of Forrest medals
-
within half an hour the exhibitors have put their plants back into their vehicles and local group members have nearly cleared the hall
-
Thank you Stan, yet again you show a brilliant series of pictures giving those not able attend a real impression of the day with plants, people, and cakes.
-
Indeed it is Maggi, well done Peter!
Thanks, Carol.

Sad death of Morag, wife of SRGC Stalwart John Lee
We are very sad to learn of the untimely death of Morag, dear wife of SRGC stalwart, John Lee of Glasgow.
John is very well known as the SRGC Glasgow Show Secretary and is a familiar face at many SRGC and AGS shows.
We send our fond condolences to John and his family on this tragic loss of a beloved wife and mother. Our thoughts are with the family at this sad time.
