Title: bulb OCD
Post by: mark smyth on April 13, 2015, 04:35:29 PM
As a Dutch man recently said I have Obsessivive Complaining Disorder. Why?

Chionodoxa missed colours bought from Bloms have only blue, pale purple and a dirty pink. Where are the other colours?

Narcissus 'Chipper' from ministaure bulbs is mostly 'Kennelis'!!

All Frit imperialis bought last year, except for 'Chopin' are so far non flowering. Why?

I bought Sanguinaria 'Mizar' from that well know seller of rare plants. I asked by email if the plants are dry, damp or pot grown. No reply. I ordered one and in the order comments section I asked the same and emphasised I only wanted pot gown or damp grown plant. No reply. A few days later a plant arrived in a plastic bag of dampish peat. Still no reply from him. I soaked it over night before planting to get some life in to the dryish roots. Its a fab flower now that its open. Pink buds, pink flowers that after a day or two turn pristine white.

Am I allowed to have OCD?

Yes, you're not alone in your experiences, Mark. I've had similar problems and with some of the same suppliers resulting in a severe case of OCD. If enough customers contracted the pathogen then surely they'd have to respond, but I'm not very hopeful of that and simply avoid patronising those suppliers.

My Nacissus pachybolbos from probably the same seller of Rare Plants turned out to be N. papyraceus, I have a Tulipa lanata from them about to flower which clearly isn't lanata. My Colchicum triphyllum from Kevock was Ornithogalum nutans and Trillium sessile was Trillium cuneatum. Caveat emptor.

Glad I'm not alone

I read on facebook that many people are having no replies from rare plants by email or his online contact form. It's as if he doesn't care what people think

Re Rare Plants: I always had a reply from them. Although my questions were about a date of delivery only, so far.
Re Kevock Gardens: very interesting. Missing bulbs inside a pot (a possible situation), Erigeron instead of Townsendia (with Townsendia label), fresh unrooted cuttings in a pot! Some plants look quiet old. But the best alpine display on the show!
My Narcissus minor from a respectable source is as tall as Tete-a-Tete. I saw half-sized one in Edinburgh Botanics. Still puzzled.

Narcissus 'Little Gentleman' is so small - not! "miniature" yet it's 30cm high

Your Little Gentleman is 30cm high. There's no answer to that!
