If the weather is clement then we hope to be there. Not been to Kendal since I left Uni, over 45 years ago.

Hope you make it to the show.

The team is getting ready and I hope it is a bit less stressful for Alan this year, now that he has managed the first one very successfully in 2014.

Susan and I will be around all day as well as helping set up on friday evening. As usual I will be manning the members plants stall for at least part of the day and Susan will be doing the important task of womanning the show computer.

For those who don't know Summerdale Garden plants: it is the local nursery owned by the parents of Abi, who owns the nursery Susan works at (Abi & Tom's Garden Plants). They have a very eclectic mix of well grown plants including many primula and other things well suited to the Lake District climate.

What a pity that none of the AGS' "Tweets" about the show mention that it is a JOINT show with SRGC.

Especially given that it is under SRGC rules this year...

The SRGC  always makes mention that this ( as well as Hexham and Ponteland) is one of the "joint" shows", no matter what set of rules these shows are run under.

It is not just in "Tweets" that this information is missed - the same happens on the AGS website  too- no mention of the SRGC at all....   very disappointing.

I suggest being aware of glass house syndrome...............The AGS Shows Handbook always says at the top that it is 'organised by the AGS in conjunction with the SRGC'. In the SRGC shows handbook this is only stated for the Newcastle show. You have to read down to  'Organisation' to find that members of both societies are eligible for the other two shows. The AGS page for show dates and venues also states which shows are joint.

p.s. I don't Tweet, I leave that to the birds

Just finished one of the paintings this morning! I want to contribute since the AGS have allowed more interesting classes that don't have to be 'the full botanical'.
Hope to see some other forumists there - please introduce yourselves if you see me.

As it happens I posted this event on the AGS website - I have been doing that recently to help out.

There is no evil conspiracy - merely omission in haste.  Rather than re-type information from the shows handbook (which includes the line "Organised by the ALPINE GARDEN SOCIETY in conjunction with the SCOTTISH ROCK GARDEN CLUB") I copied last year's event details and updated it with the information about this year's event.

I will try to correct this omission for future shows; if there are mistakes please feel free to give me a polite nudge.

Very kind, Jon.
I expect, given the unstinting publicity which is given to AGS events on this site,  that you can see that it is a tad odd not to see the SRGC even mentioned in AGS public  notices for joint shows.

I would love to come to the Kendal Show but as much to see the Lake District and gardens like Holehird as anything else, which puts it into perspective for me. I do think this, which is a new Show as far as place is concerned, is an opportunity to fly the flag for alpines in general and for closer organisational ties to be forged between the two alpine societies, still in the same country at least at the moment ;). Change seems to be in the air in all sorts of ways and the success of the alpine shows presumably must lie in those new gardeners who get involved as much as for those who have been for much of their lives. Hope that all those new to the alpine gardening world enjoy visiting Kendal! I'm sure they will.

One day after  the 142nd anniversary of the birth of the great plant hunter George Forrest, there's another chance to win  the premier SRGC plant award  which was named to honour him - the " George Forrest Memorial Medal"  for the most meritorious plant in the show" at the joint SRGC/AGS Kendal Show.

This link has a record of  all the "tweets made to Botanist_Forrest's memory yesterday on "Twitter"
http://files.srgc.net/journals/ForrestBirthday2015.pdf (http://files.srgc.net/journals/ForrestBirthday2015.pdf)

Wishing all exhibitors at the show the very best of luck - and may a truly wonderful plant win the medal!

Well ! I'm sure George Forrest would have been pleased to see the plant winning "his" medal today at the Kendal show  - it was this cracking potful of sunshine -  Dionysia ( I reckon D. aretiodes?)  shown by  Frank and Barbara Hoyle  and photographed by Alan Gardner.

[attachimg=1]

Many congratulations to the Hoyles - who won a Farrer last year at Kendal with a fine Cyclamen  8)

If this is indicative of the plants on the benches, Show Secretary  Alan Oatway  and his Team will be feeling very pleased this evening!

Well, just got back, 260 mile round trip. Images will take some time. Lots of lovely plants, lots of people standing around talking so you could not get to see them, even more stood in doorways blocking the entrances. And as usual a venue with totally inadequate parking and no one to point out where there might be other places to leave the car.
I can see us not bothering going again!

some quick snaps of the main award winners. The Forrest medal went to  Frank and Barbara Hoyle as did a merit cert for the cyclamen which I think was the plant that won the top award a  year ago. Don Peace had the trophy for most points and the AGS medal for 6 small pots. Tommy Anderson took the AGS medal for 6 larger pots one of which won a merit cert. as well

Dave Morris had most points in section 3.

A well deserved gold medal went to the display  on Lakeland wild orchids  set up by Ann Kitchen. The photo does not do it justice, There were lots of photos on display as well as the competitive classes. Rannveig Wallis had an intriguing  set titled plants macabre with human body parts photoshopped into the flowers.

The macabre photos were taken (and manipulated  :o ) by Jon Evans.  The reference on the caption to Rannveig Wallis was that it was her plant.

Thanks  for the extra info Diane. There were lots of excellent photos in the competitive section and I am posting  only a small selection to give some idea of what was on display. The quality of the originals  was far superior to these snaps. They included plants  in the wild and cultivation as well as monochrome and digitally manipulated images.

Further to the comments about the Kendal Show I did not recognise the same show. My trip was 350 miles there and back. No problem parking. Plenty of room to circulate folk moved if you smiled. Show Sec and his helpers ran an excelent day in a venue not fully ideal but which show is. I fully intend to go next year.

Well done

This year the popular mini gardens were divided into two section in the Open classes - one for a garden one for a landscape. The landscape class caters for the type of garden we have become used to seeing. The first two photos show Anne Vale's tiny garden with details of the planting. The third photo  is of the Open landscapes   and the last the Intermediate  section.

"Stan the Man"  proves once more that he has no equal in show reporting- and reporting well and at speed!  No mean feat  to get home from a long trip and get all these photos of such quality prepared and posted so soon.  Ian the Christie kind is quite right - it is very nearly as good as being there.
How Stan manages to get such good photos caught  "on the hoof" as it were, is beyond me - but  am immensely grateful, as I know others are, that we are able to see  so much of the bustle of the show as well as such details of  the plants. THANK YOU , STAN!!!!

Thanks for the photo tour of the show Stan, even though I was there I didn't manage to get round to see everything - a mixture of being a busy bee and full of cold.  Apologies to all of you that were there and I didn't get to speak with .. or in some embarrassing cases completely forgot your name  :-[ I'm afraid a head that feels like it is stuffed with cotton wool isn't very helpful!

I loved the artistic section, it is the first time I have been to a show with artwork, the quality was very good.  Annes picture of a crocus was amazing.  I also loved the macabre photos by Jon - and the reaction of people viewing them, saw one person take a sharp step backward when they spotted the 'teeth'   ;D

Didn't get the plant sales until the afternoon - or what was left of them, lots of empty spaces on the sales tables which is nice to see.  Will be quicker off the mark at Hexham, did however pick up a couple of lovely little Daphnes for the garden from Kevock.

Late as usual, had intended to do some yesterday but we had a strange yellow object in a blue sky and it was warm so too nice to be indoors. I note the comments re parking etc and all I can say is that there are very few shows that I can think of where there is ample parking and a reminder, already mentioned by Peter, at the Hexham show it is likely that parking will be very difficult as the 'Free Parking' area, while holding a lot of cars from recent experience fills up early in the day and the cars are in the main parked all day. Down by the supermarket the red bays limit you to 2 hours.
My posts will just put some plant I/d and exhibitor names to the pictures, very little in the way of comment
Class 1 had one entry from Tommy Anderson, all of which were fine plants and two outstanding ones were
Saxifraga 'Allendale Ghost', was awarded a Certificate of Merit (C of M )
Saxifraga 'Cumulus'... this was a lovely plant, just had a very small area slightly behind the main plant but still one of the best of its kind I have seen

Frank and Barbara Hoyle had a great day at the show winning the Forrest Medal with
Dionysia aretiodes in class 3, they also had another plant
Cyclamen pseudibericum go up for the medal as well...it won last year, I gather judges went 6-6 and needed the secs casting vote to decide
Another C of M went to Ian Kidman with a 20 year old pan of
Dionysia curviflora 'Edinburgh'
Hepatica japonica 'Hoho Beni' (15) from Brian and Shelagh Smethurst
Colchicum svositsii Pink Form (26) from Diane Clement

As can be expected from the winner of last years Guiseppe Cup, Don Peace produced some lovely plants and had the most points in the Open Section. some of his exhibits were
Primula 'Arduaine' (9)
Iris 'Frank Elder' (25)....you have to admit these Iris are both fine exhibition and garden plants
Iris winowgradowii (45)....is one of my favourites
Saxifraga oppositifolia 'Icelandic Form'....lovely, for me nearly impossible to grow, Don does it year in year out
One not from Don but another old stalwart Alan Furness
Bergenia ciliata 'Patricia Furness' (27), we used to see this often but this is the first time I have seen for some time...think he must have had it in the house to be flowering so early

Primula allionii 'Anna Griffith' 10), a very old cultivar still able to compete, shown by Edward Spencer, he also had
Callianthemum anemonoides (16)
Trillium nivale (21) from Peter Bland, I think this might have been the only trillium on the bench
Galanthus ikariae ssp ikariae (69) from Ian Kidman
Saxifraga 'Allendale Tommy' (45) by, surprise surprise Tommy Anderson

As is usual for this time of year Primula allionii, especially in the <19cm pans, were in good form although they were fewer in number this year the quality was still there. Some examples are
Primula 'Lepus' Geoff Rollinson who also had
Primula allionii 'Francis Burrow' (54)
My
Primula allionii 'Hythe Vicki' was up against it in the one pan class but it was the first time I have had on the bench...has some potential though
Iris svetlanae (47) Ivor Betteridge was a much admired exhibit, don't remember seeing it before
Pulsatilla grandis 'Budapest Blue' (62) from Dave Riley caught my eye, it did not get placed but was a lovely colour (plus thought I had to keep in with the ruling class!)

The competition for the best plant in a <19cm pan must have been tough, I am not sure what plants went up for the award but the winner was
Fritillaria gibbosa (72) from Cyril Lafong....not the best picture I am afraid but will give you the idea of how good it was
I think that
Dionysia freitagii (58) shown by Derek Pickard must have given the Frit a good run for the award, might have been my choice
Cyril also had
Crocus 'Carpathian Wonder' on the bench, is for me a lovely, desirable plant but here it had to be content with a second place, beaten by a pristine Iris reticulata from John Richards (sorry no pic). Cyrils crocus had been on the bench since 6-45 in the morning and I think if he had left it in the cool car till not long before judging it would still have been in full freshness. Why was he there so early....because he was staying with Brian Burrow and Brian had to be there early to open up the show.
Fritillaria alburyana (72) from Geoff Rollinson, a second place against the F gibbosa

Last two pictures, both are Narcissus, quite a good showing on the bench but for me a shade too many hybrid type cultivars
Narcissus 'Jim Lad' (68) from Ivor Betteridge, he also had
Narcissus cantabricus in 73, a pristine example

I thought that this was a good show given the season we in the North are having though there were some surprising plants in full flower so the weather must have been warmer somewhere...good luck to them, hopefully the weather only improves gradually as there are still a lot of shows to come and you can only get so many plants into a car boot!

Thanks to all for supporting the Kendal Show. Thanks especially for all those lovely photographs from Stan and the Vet - I've now seen more of the Show than I managed on Saturday!

Lots of positivity and warmth came south with you all, and it was much appreciated.

It was a cold season here too, so there were slightly fewer entries - but slightly more members of the public came through the door, which is a great result. Sorry that those numbers made the parking difficult for some folk: we had 140 cars on site which is pretty good compared to many venues, but we do have some ideas for helping those who find the place full, so we hope nobody will be put off trying next year!

Hi Alan!  Everyone I've spoken to had a great time.

With 140 parking spaces you are more than lucky - and must have been VERY busy! At the old Aberdeen Show venue we had only  restricted street parking and we managed well enough with that for over 20 years there.

Welcome to the forum Alan!

As Susan and I arrived at 7:15 AM and were around afterwards to help pack up, we never really noticed the parking situation as the car park was empty when we saw it. But, as Maggi says, 140 spaces is generous. Some locals 'in the know' parked at the leisure centre 100 yards away too.

Personally I think that to get such a level of interest from the public is so important that it outweighs the very few disadvantages with the venue.

'Aisle blocking' by groups of people gossiping happens at every show I've been to - and every supermarket I've been to as well! And at least our visitors were not armed with shopping trolleys - that tends to be at Hexham ;D

As Alan says, it was lovely to catch up with people we haven't seen (in most cases) since the same show last year.
