Here is a picture of the rock garden at Myddelton House, beautiful weather. Pictures and video of the sale as soon as we can! A very enjoyable day enhanced by the superb company ;D Took a bit of time to load as my file was 200.1 kb so had to be reduced!!
-
hope this works, spot the forumist having to be rushed a long a little :D
Andrew the head gardener kindly allowed a few of us to use a good spot to film inside the sale.

photos to follow.
-
Now isn't that a perfect picture of a good day in a garden in January? The sun is out, the snowdrops are growing well, there is depth in the scene from the evergreens and mossy rocks - how lovely!
-
Excellent video Richard, it is funny spotting the players. 'Castle Green Dragon' had gone by the time the 15th person went through the gap!
-
First video of the event .....
Priceless! :D
-
As always it was great to catch up with old friends and spend some time in the garden this afternoon with the well travelled crew ;)
Bought two more nice drops.
-
Only shame is that the wait and the sales are not in a sunnier spot!
-
Here are the first five of the 130 I took (no they won't all be here!). Brian and I also have videos from different angles and will get those up asap.
1. The queue
2. The queue
3. The calm before the storm
4. Val Bourne talking to tall man
5. National collection holder rushing to selling position

A lovely part of the garden Maggi, beyond the Alpine meadow. They are hoping to restore the Rock Garden next, the cost being some £50,000 so all our entrance monies will be heading that way no doubt. We estimated perhaps 300 buyers so just over £1000 towards it. It should be completed by 2065 at this rate ::)
-
The next five from this morning.
1. Part of the Glen Chantry stall
2. A pristine Glen Chantry stall before opening with Wol and Sue Staines
3. The Woodchippings stall drops selling like hot cakes
4. Andy Thorp's stall
5. Frenzy at Mike and Anne Broadhursts stall. Emma Thick to far right, David MacLennan (green coat).
-
Also the start of the Snowdrop Hat season, too .......all the very best folks have 'em! ;D
-
Does anyone else think it looks as if Emma was being led astray and being force-marched past others in the queue?
I managed to get a rare shot of David, the man behind the camera.
And this snowdrop in the Garden would not stay still so you only get an impression from the bad photo. I think it was Grumpy's cousin, "Distraught".
-
That is a really super portrait of David - well done!
-
Yes I thought Emma surprisingly reluctant ;)
-
Yes I thought Emma surprisingly reluctant ;)
I thought Emma trying VERY hard to be cool ... and maintain dignity, as befits a Snowdrophatlady
-
I thought Emma surprisingly reluctant
Emma did not look terribly reluctant when I saw her later in the sale, when she has armfuls of snowdrops :o
-
I managed to get a rare shot of David, the man behind the camera.
My that is a fine shot and rare as a green platyphyllus.
johnw - +3c & a weather bomb approaching w. 2" rain

johnw - +3c & a weather bomb approaching w. 2" rain
I read that as a " green platypus " and wondered what on earth that meant ..... ( it's been a long day!)
-
Another 10 coming:
1. Mike Broadhurst
2. Joe Sharman's stall
Now a change of lens for something closer:
3. General view
4. The man himself - Joe Sharman
5. Another general view
-
Cousin Cheryl was leading me astray ...... :-\ I was trying to be good , she did drag me ! She's very strong ! I was protesting that it just wasn't British to do that .......still I have no regrets :o
-
the second five:
1. In the background people huddling around Glen Chantry to keep warm
2. Wol Staines surrounded by buyers
3. Matt Bishop and Melvyn Jope
4. Woodchippings with Richard Bashford and Valery Bexley plus Brian Ellis far left
5. Forumists galore! Richard Webb, Brian Ellis, Simon, Chas and Arthur
Dinner calls so more later and hopefully the video
-
Emma did not look terribly reluctant when I saw her later in the sale, when she has armfuls of snowdrops :o
I thought it better not to mention that in case of retaliation ;D
-
Not of all of the snowdrops in my arms were for me ! I am a personal shopper , I will quite happily acquire bulbs for other people . So my job today was well done , my customer is happy and so am I lol

Well for snowdrops I am , but you don't like those Maggi
-
I am a personal shopper
I must remember that one for next year! ;D
-

Great fun to see all these pictures, and the video! We arrived a bit late after missing the turn, along with a friend who had not been before. Stiil a lot of interesting snowdrops to tempt us... (Heffalump, Brian Mathew, Lapwing, Kildare...) Here is a picture of the calm after the storm. It's also enjoyable to wander around the garden after the sale, though I'm thinking what a wonderful rock garden could emerge from £50000 - roll on 2065! There is a good walk too for the dog between Myddelton and Fortey Hall just down the road. A nice day to bring all the pictures of snowdrops on this Forum to life!
-
Shown this to friends not at all "green fingers", remarks were : i thought rush only exists for the new Iphone.
-
Sad to miss the sale for the second year now.....maybe next year. It looks like you all had great fun though and i love the video. Well done Richard....its a classic.
Hope i get to one snowdrop event this year to catch up with snowdrop friends.
Jennie
-
It does look like fun, and a great opportunity to meet a lot of familiar and friendly Forum faces. Myddleton isn't too far from my parents, so maybe I'll get there next year too.
-
It is a great trip, meeting many of the same people standing around you in the queue.
It is also very funny listening to the non-galanthophile partners talking 'targets'. I am very used to assigning targets for my husband to get and the resulting reluctance to hear discussion of any other varieties as it 'causes confusion with the list'.
Yesterday, I heard a number of exasperated partners using the same argument, 'stop mentioning other varieties unless they are on my list!'
'They also serve who only stand and memorise lists'
-
Perhaps there should be two queues? One for the Galanthophiles and one for their partners, silently reciting their target list over and over in their heads. ;D
-
Thank you for the pictures and the video, I wish I was there (but perhaps better for my money that I wasn't). The rock garden in the first picture is really great!
-
There will be more to come today Leena, including pictures of the rock garden from the top I think, and also some close ups (so beware Val Bourne the 2015 edition will be published). You may have seen her comment in The Telegraph yesterday!
http://www.telegraph.co.uk/gardening/gardeningadvice/11362848/How-to-create-snowdrop-heaven-in-your-garden.html (http://www.telegraph.co.uk/gardening/gardeningadvice/11362848/How-to-create-snowdrop-heaven-in-your-garden.html)
I'm not sure whether I am still regarded as a friend!
The rock garden is amazing to make sure the rocks were secure E.A.Bowles (who put them in himself) jumped up and down on them - it created a wonderful picture in my head!
-
Great! :) I'm looking forward to more rock garden pictures. I see that big rocks give nice backgrounds also to snowdrops.
-
What an amazing day - only my second trip to Myddleton so I was a little more prepared than last year, still didn't get the elusive ones - need to be faster next time!!!! - recognised some faces from the forum - maybe we can design a badge for those members so we don't seem weird talking to strangers - hope everyone got at least one they wanted
-
Looking at the number of buyers, the range of sellers and the pretty vast number of plants on sale- I get dizzy just thinking about how one would plan one's purchases ??? Where to begin? I suppose that most attending might have some idea of who might have what plants but for someone like me- just looking at the list of possibles Andrew gave us ( listed in the Snowdrop Events thread) there are already so many possibilities - that I might see plants I fancy, but I would have no idea who might have them! The thought of me trotting about like a headless chicken trying to join in is laughable. ;D Added, of course, to the fact that as a short person, I'd never see half the plants anyway! That tall fellow seen chatting to Val Bourne has the build for the game, though!
Wonder if Ms Bourne has been told yet about that photo? ( Refers to post above re Telegraph article http://www.telegraph.co.uk/gardening/gardeningadvice/11362848/How-to-create-snowdrop-heaven-in-your-garden.html (http://www.telegraph.co.uk/gardening/gardeningadvice/11362848/How-to-create-snowdrop-heaven-in-your-garden.html)) :D 8)

Hello all, lots of talk about the ultimate snowdrop well here is the ultimate fashion accessory or essential snowdrop accessory the snowdrop cost more than the bag ( Not really just a joke) cheers Ian the Christie kind.
-
Th e BD caught the tail end of something on the radio this morning - they were talking about snowdrop sales Radio: "£100 for one snowdrop bulb - amazing" -
"Harrumph", scoffs the BD - "nothing but amateurs!Mere beginners!" ::) ;D ;D
-
thanks for the many Pictures and the Video.
unfortunately i still have to wait until Boschhoeve ( Netherlands) and Nettetal ( Germany).
But then..... :)
-

Someones got money. Wonder Who?
-
I hope someone from the group who came to me after the sale posts a photo of the boot of their cars :o
Must have been travelling light, or left all their belongings behind to make room for drops. Probably the latter.....

Yes her latest photo has been passed on! As a beginner I think you have some snowdrops in your head that you are looking for and bypass all others until you find them. Anthony was agonizing over whether to buy 'Richard Blakeway-Phillips' yesterday as it was one he had mentally marked (did you get it?), whilst focussed on that he was not seeing the others around it and I remember being like that. As time goes by there are more that you are looking for and you just go to the sellers with the best plants first and look for them then work your way around (see video), however this does mean that people rushed by Matt's stand (with equally good value plants) and I was able to pick up a G. nivalis Verdigris a while after the main rush - much to my surprise and thanks to Chas ;)

Had a number of those in my wallet at 10.30am which quickly evaporated or rather by alchemy turned into blue plastic bags full of 'white gold'. Is it just me or does anyone else have the odd affliction of (almost) not flinching at paying £40 for a snowdrop but almost falls over at being charged £3+ for a coffee at the services on the way home?

I suspect a poll of those there yesterday most would have sided with you. But then I would flinch at paying £3 for a coffee without buying anything else!
-
The last few now.
1. Emma Thick and hat
2. Richard from Holland
3. Think this was the only stall that didn't have hordes round it. Felt a bit sorry for them.
4. Arthur Nicholls again
-
1. Jan Whight (Mrs Chas)
2. Richard Webb - Bennington Lordship)
3. Joe Sharman - Monksilver Nursery
4. Anke Way
5. David Way
-
Oops sorry. more to come
-

I reckon it was that David Blaine, it happened to me too ;)
-
Last of the sale
1. Matt Bishop
2. Not much left on the Glenchantry tables
-
Lastly a few from the rock garden
-

Me too - when you see all these folk walking about first thing in the morning- beeline to coffee shop on way ti work - not much wonder they can't afford anything useful - like a house, or a plant! :P ::)

Quite agree!
-
I also get annoyed when you have to pay to get into plant sales - after all they are going to reduce the contents of your wallet anyway and must make enough from the sellers contributions, and especially refreshments which we all want (bacon rolls to be recommended at Myddelton, also the soup). This sale is an exception as the proceeds were going to a really worthwhile cause.
-
Didn't go this year on the grounds that there was a risk that I might buy something.
-

Cor I never thought of that!

So fun to see the video, thank you Richard. I am amazed at the size of the crowd. The rush did not look too dangerous. Maybe from that distance you can't see the pushing and shoving. It was funny to see people running up from the back passing everyone. Is that kosher? Also enjoyed all the photos especially David's vignettes.
-
I'm a bit late to this... very good photos everyone, and it was nice to catch up with some of you for the first time this season.
Alan, I think this may be a picture of your 'distraught' Grumpy... There were a lot of grumpy looking snowdrops... I assume it's because they missed the sale?
Brian... I was quite fixated... but it was made worse because I'd already bought a small number of nice things... and I was trying to justify one more... and I did... :-[ :-[ *need more discipline* As we discussed... and you could have done more to discourage me... I have a terrible 'thing' for textured petals!!
Looking forward to seeing many of you at the events to come...

I suppose the argument for chariging for entry is to moderate the numbers and to help ensure that those attending are more "serious" customers - thus avoiding clogging the place up with mere "gawkers" ......

Nice pictures David, well done ;). It was a lovely day in Myddleton and great to meet many friends from the forum. Although it seemed
I still have missed a lot :-[. One day at Myddleton is just not enough !
Got some new snowdrops for my collection ;D, but think my bankmanager will call me tomorrow :D.
I always thought that our English friends were polite, but when the sales open the seem to have forgotten that ;D ;D ;D.
A great day and hope to be there again next year.

Crumbs, Anthony, no point in looking to Brian for restraint - he can't even spell it ;D
Funny thing about textured petals - I can see the attraction - but then sometimes I like plain and simple - really great thatwe all find something to pique our interest, isn't it?
-

Don't tell everybody Richard.......sorry no photo. We had a good day with shopping :-[.
Was great to visit you Richard, thank you for your time and the walk around your lovely garden. And of course for your lovely snowdrops ;D

You're welcome, hope you all had a good trip back.

Well that seems ok
-
I am a little late to this post, having left the sale around 12 to then travel home and onto Stafford, with my sons
What can I say yet another great sales event at Myddleton House, and I did find 3 drops that were on my most wanted list ;D ;D ;D,and also to mention that a very very kind forum member who had heard of my plight with a certain bulb, came to me in the car park with a pot of the said bulb to replace the ones that I had lost......a huge thank you to him
Cracking photo's David and thanks for the one of Jan
Great also to meet and chat with forum members there. I don't know if David would have a wide angle lens to get everyone in on a group photo ;D ;D
We are now looking forward to Shaftesbury.....................and maybe more purchases ;) ;)
-
Well that seems ok
Great fun - I enjoy a film of an evening .....
-
Great also to meet and chat with forum members there. I don't know if David would have a wide angle lens to get everyone in on a group photo
Yep got one of those a 10 x 20 so can go very wide. Have had a coach load in picture with room to spare. Could even put it on a tripod and run into it myself!
-
You're welcome, hope you all had a good trip back.
We had a good trip back Richard, thank you for asking. Arrived home at 1.30 hour in the night..... ::)
When having a look in the garden, there was no snowdrop to find......all covered with snow :-\
But with some nice additions to my collecting waiting to be planted outide still in the cold house, I still have snowdrops to look at ;D
-
Great to "see " you there in the pictures, Richard - glad you got some nice 'drops .
Thank you Maggi. It was 'hard work' to get some snowdrops I wanted. But I am happy with them.
We had a real lovely day together with our friends from Belgium.
-
I still regret not have been able to recognize everybody from the forum.
For next year maybe, we all wear a name badge....... ::) ::) ::)
-
Yes I think you are right Richard, name badges as at Shaftesbury
-
I was looking to have a chat with Melvyn Jope, never met Melvyn personal before. When standing in line before the sale started,
a man asked me or I was Freddy from Belgium. I answered him that my parents did give me a different name but that I could introduce him to Freddy, who was with us in the car. On the way back to home I asked or anybody had seen Melvyn......then Freddy told me that the man who was looking for him and I introduced was Melvyn....... :-[ :-[ :-[ :-[ :-[ :-[ :-[ :-[ :-[ :-[ :-[ :-[ :-[ :-[ :-[ :-[ :-[ :-[ :-[ :-[
Sorry Melvyn, hopefully we can meet next year :D

Very disappointed too, how ironic! Please email me if you plan to come to the UK again before next February.

Richard, are you joining the VRV friends on their trip to the AGS Harlow Show on the 28th February?
-

Great video David, especially from both angles. I was about 6-7 from the front and the idiot ambling towards Joe Sharman's stand, I seriously had not noticed all those running which is why I suppose I did not get Green Dragon.
-
It was a fantastic day! My first time at Myddelton and what an experience! It reinforced the fact that the snowdrop world is made great by it's people as well as plants. As I'm a newbie on here I possibly didn't get a chance to introduce myself to one or two major contributors to the forum :( Here are two drops I noticed in the Gardens that caught my eye. The pale hued drop was particularly attractive in the sunlight and the small drop was very diminutive but similar in some respects to Wasp .
-
Richard, are you joining the VRV friends on their trip to the AGS Harlow Show on the 28th February?
Maggi, I will not be at the AGS Harlow Show on the 28th February :-\. Think for next year I will have to book a hotel for a month to be able to visit more events ;).
-

I will Melvyn, thank you.

A friend sent me this on Facebook. The sale is getting lots of coverage this year....

NOT the best piece of journalism I've ever read.

-

At least they are consistent ;D
You're not alone Alan, I'm rubbish and always forgetting faces, can get quite embarrassing :-[
-
I'm just staggered at how many people view the photos in such a short time. I'm even more staggered that 57 people have looked at a photo of two twenty pound notes. Has no one wondered whose they were?
-

At least 57 of us have - we're trying to see if we recognise the fingers 8)
Which is pretty daft, especially in my case, since I haven't met most of you face to face! :-\ ;D
-
Love the videos! The tall gent in the long camel hair coat has quite a turn of speed.

Crikey I'd have been looking at the twenties! The fingers belong to a forum member and I can tell you whose pocket the money went into but wasn't quick enough to catch that.

We can see the cuff of a greenish jacket, similar colour to the one the chap at Andrew's stall in IMG_0658w is wearing. Also, the chap in that image has his wallet out (but judging from the videos, who didn't?). An educated (but incorrect) guess.

Alan, I met a lot of Facebook and Forum friends, but considering the fine array of hats, scarves, coats, thermals etc I think perhaps most of us don't look as we do in profile pics! There's always next year!

Well I didn't give you much to go on Matt and you must have looked at lots of green coats in the pictures so here is the answer and well done!

I remember now Brian, I definitely think forum members need some kind of badge or some kind of masonic secret signal. Myddleton was certainly an eye opener and a fantastic event and seeing where Bowles gardened especially the famous rockery was the icing on the cake.
Who is going to the last opening of 'The patch'? Perhaps a meet up there?

You mean enough money left to buy a sausage roll after all your snowdrop purchases, Steve?
-

Goodness, I didn't know they sold sausage rolls on the Glenchantry stall. Sue must have been pleased to get that £40 you handed over for one!
