I was very chuffed to be asked to suggest a name for a beautiful new snowdrop from Wol & Sue Staines (GC14) which I saw today! The flowers looked just like a swarm of green bees resting on the plant so I suggested 'Bumble Green'. It is described as:
"Bumble Green is a substantial elwesii with two well defined marks on the inner segments. It starts flowering well before Xmas. The green marks on the outer segments of mature bulbs at their best add much to the overall attractiveness of the flower but they can be variable."
Of all the 'green' snowdrops I have seen it is by far the most attractive and it is way more stunning than my 'Green Tear' and early flowering too!
I managed to take a couple of rough photos which I have attached.
I understand that a very few MAY be available at Myddelton and maybe Harvey's and I have given the photos to my husband with the instruction to 'get one by all necessary means or come home on his shield'!
It will be a prized addition to any collection and I suggest that if you want it you should wear running spikes at Myddelton ;D
-
Ah lucky you ;D good name .
I hope to be at Myddelton if I can get my car fixed next week !
-
That's a good name, Ingrid - such fun for you to be asked! In the pic from above the flower I can see what you mean about green bumble bees. Even the marks are fat! 8)

Very handsome plant, hope he has sharp elbows ;)

Hi Richard, it is a real beauty and the photo does it scant justice!
He is an expert in Russian Sambo, which came in very handy at Myddelton last year, it is the only reason I take him! ;D

These UK snowdrop events sound dangerous!

These UK snowdrop events sound dangerous!
Hi Carolyn, they are indeed ::) Myddelton was characterised by hoards of grim faced galanthophiles, twitching slightly as the time they removed the barrier approached, revving their scythed chariots and muttering to themselves ;D Usain Bolt came 10th in the sprint to the Glen Chantry stall, he has been a broken man since!
-
It's a kind horticultural Black Friday thing, only a little more dignified ;)

That's not my impression of my one and only gala!

That's not my impression of my one and only gala!
I would love to be a fly on the wall. Hidden video anyone?
-
I'm sure someone could film the countdown and stampede ;D
Won't be me, as much as I like them I won't be standing in a queue for several hours to be at the front.
-
Well I will be there, weather permitting, taking a few photos so I expect if I can get the act together in time I could, as long as I get a good vantage point, take a video as well. Having said that the file will be pretty large so I will have to find out how to get it to the size for the web as I only have experience of photos.
-

Richard, me neither, it takes a special kind of behaviour disorder to do that ;D
-
You can order a bacon roll and cup of tea while in the queue ;D
-
Something worth standing in a queue for!
-
My blood pressure is shooting up just thinking about it :-\

Some notes from Andrew about the Myddleton sale : http://www.srgc.net/forum/index.php?topic=12117.msg322027#msg322027 (http://www.srgc.net/forum/index.php?topic=12117.msg322027#msg322027)

Think my priorities are probably different to most when I'm planning to get there early for food.
It is less stressful with my £10 per bulb budget, I can just wait for the melee to die down then look for the cheap stuff :)

That Myddleton list makes me so sad, although I cheer myself up by thinking that I probably wouldn't be aggressive enough to get what I wanted. Richard, while you are waiting for the melee to die down and the £10 bulbs to be accessible, you could be filming :D.
-
Will see what I can do, I'm at work for a few hours in the morning so not sure I will make the opening but if I can get there before 1030 I will try and capture the moment.

Another bitterly cold sale! Did film the charge so will add a link to the clip later, nearly didnt happen due to me hitting the off button instead of record :-[
-
I looked for the 'brand new beauty' but they had all gone by the time I got to the front.
-
Was it very busy, Alan? It's a bright day up here which would bring out droves, I think
-
Hi Maggi, it was very busy and bitterly cold! The other half achieved all his targets, including the lovely 'Bumble Green', which looked even better then I remembered.
As suspected there were limited numbers and they went very rapidly. I don't know if any will be going to Harvey's next Saturday but it might be worth a look for those who were disappointed. It is certainly as good as the other 'big hitter' that was on offer and exceptionally good value in terms of price.
-
Do hope you are giving your "runner" a nice footrub to get the feeling back into his feet now, Blonde Ingrid - he seems to have done very well. 8)
-
giving your "runner" a nice footrub
He had a bacon roll and 6 espressos, which is plenty, I don't want to spoil him ::)
-
6 espressos?!!!!! Good grief :o- are your light fittings strong enough for all that swinging ? ( perhaps I might have worded that better ... but I hope you know what I mean!?) :-[
-
His resting pulse never gets above 40, no matter how many espressos I feed him ;)
-
Mercy, if he were any more relaxed he'd be comatose!

Have moved Richard's video to this thread : The Ultimate Snowdrop Sale, Myddleton House 2015 http://www.srgc.net/forum/index.php?topic=12723.0 (http://www.srgc.net/forum/index.php?topic=12723.0) ;)

Hi Maggi, it was very busy and bitterly cold!
Funny, I was just thinking how perfectly mild it appeared and how over-dressed everyone was. By Canadian standards one would judge the temp to be circa -15c. but then the G. would have flopped. ;)

There was a slight by your stands I'm sure wind chill, and we had some of us been stood in the queue for 1hr 30 minuites , some longer than that
-
Do they take the money in advance? It seems that once the gate is open everyone just piles in.....
-
Yes up until the gate opens ;D it's all very well organised.
-
The queue had started before 8am, so some keen folks stood around for 2 1/2 hours before they were compeled to run, it's a long time for the adrenaline rush to build up!
-
Excellent musings and right on the money. Being my first visit it was quite an experience but that what happens in commerce and it's simply a case of supply and demand. I think it's very much luck of the draw to where you rock up on someone's stand and your hearts desire is not in that 2 square metres within your grasp.
I doubt there were more than 4 or 5 of the 'desirables' (if that) on any stand besides Matt Bishops. Given the number of people there and the spread out location of the varieties the chances are slim at best. Most people I talked to had an idea of what they were after but if they got what they wanted it was more luck than planning. If I'd gone there only for a Green Dragon it would have been a 400 mile gamble with very poor odds.

I beg to differ, but then it depends on your personal definition of 'desirables' :)
-
The new Bumble Green in-situ! It is a super addition to the green range, large strong flowers and great markings.
-
I'm not a huge fan of the greens really- so ' Bumble Green' is to my taste, being mostly white - with such definite inner marks - plus, I love the name!
-
Whilst Myddleton House can be a lottery, you can be at the head of the queue for dormant bulbs - unless you happen to be away when the list arrives :) ;D :)

Glad you got one Ingrid, especially as you named it :D

I've learned over more than 30 years of growing galanthus that chasing after all the latest 'must have' snowdrops is a strain not only on one's wallet but also on one's nerves.
Sometimes it takes many years to attain your heart's desire..........and when you do attain it life is oh so sweet ;D
