I asked him for his seed list in 2014 and the instructions on there about how to pay and order seeds is not particularly clear.
The only way I am comfortable sending money to the continent is by cheque.
Has any one else bought seed from him in the UK and how have you gone about it and how much dose it cost to post? :)
Thanks :)

It's easy to set up an international bank transfer with online banking using the bank account details (IBAN, etc) that Vlastimil has included on his seed list. I have paid him safely and conveniently by this method on three occasions now and can confirm that it is safe and hassle-free.

Me too.

Thanks guys for that. Some of his seeds he has are quite rare upon research.

My impression has been, in the past, that UK bank charges for this service are quite high?
-
Yes, mine charges £10.

Awww c'mon David!
You surely wouldn't deny a poor banker his bonuses? :o
-
It was 20 pounds in Canada when I last checked about ten years ago.
I'm sure it has gone up since.
Thank you to whoever started PayPal.
-
I agree with Diane, thank goodness for Paypal, it would be much easier for us to get seed from this particular seed list. I cannot manage any of the options.
In New Zealand my bank has a minimum of $100.00 to be transferred and that is often too much for a seed purchase, plus a fee for being so generous as to allow me to transfer money.

For transferring money to a bank account in another country I use this company https://transferwise.com/ (https://transferwise.com/) charges 0.5% of transaction, with a minimum of £1, fee, much cheaper than a bank and the exchange rate is better.

My bank (BNS) quoted $35 / £20 just a couple of years ago so I mailed cash instead. Probably not a wise thing to do but preferred that to dealing with unknown companies on the internet who were willing to do transactions, enough horrors to deal with aside from an emptied account.

Surely not a problem on an index linked teachers pension.
-
I've ordered from Pilous' seed list also. I'm a risk taker, I sent cash, as in USD , and it arrived safely. My order was filled, received , and seedlings are germinating as we speak. To each his own.
Paypal would be easiest, but this vendor does not subscribe. Apple Pay will soon supersede Paypal. This all makes international sales and payments the easiest, and safest. Bitcoin, anyone?

Maybe, en masse we could ask Mr Pilous to start with Paypal? If enough people wanted to buy and pay in this way surely it would be worth his while. I've twice bought seed from him, a few years ago now, and had excellent germination and subsequent results but I don't remember how I paid for it.
-
Hi Lesley I bought from Vlastimil last year and paid by bank transfer, I think my charges were about £10.00. I've already sent in a order for this year, i'll use the site Neil suggested, it sounds a lot cheaper.
-
His methods of preferred payment are so awkward and risky (Please send cash in the post, No, really it's fine :) ) Agree with Lesley, He should start using Paypal.
-
Oh well, in that case I'll send him an order and tell him I can only pay by Paypal and see what happens.
-
I first purchased bulbs from Dr Pilous in 1996 and he has always used the same methods.
Although it might be more convenient for us if he used Pay Pal given that he seems to sell everything he has available there is little or no incentive for him to change.
He has proved totally reliable in all these years and I have never had any difficulties with him.

Even if that had been based on fact it has no bearing on the individual economic problem in balancing means and ends with alternative uses!

Me too; I just do a bank transfer online. It takes only seconds and is secure.

PayPal does not require that the recipient is a business or has an account.
One can send money to any individual and in this case the sender pays the fee which is
very low - a couple of dollars.

I found Vlastimil Pilous from this thread and ordered seeds a little over a week ago and received them today. Very nice and though some seeds were already finished I got some very interesting peonies, and most of all I'm happy to get P.parnassica seeds. Also wild collected P.veitchii from China will be interesting to see in a few years. :)
I paid directly to bank account, very easy when we have the same currency.
-
I sent an order on 23rd December and have heard nothing. Now trying a follow up but expect most things will be gone.
Update-had a speedy reply as expected from Dr Pilous and mine have been in the post for a couple of weeks so hoping they are not lost!!
-
Hi tony I'm in the same boat as you, I made my order not long after I recieved the list and have not heard or recieved anything. I might drop him an email later.
-
It seems I was lucky that the mail came fast.
I asked for the seed list by mail and he answered the same day with the list. I made my order and then didn't hear from him, but the seeds arrived so he must have sent them right after he got my order. :)
-
I received an email from Vlastimil yesterday saying he had posted my order on 12/1, just hope it gets here, I've got everything crossed.
-
I ordered on 24th December and received my seeds today.
-
Just recieved my seeds today, recieved all my order bar one.
-
Hi all,
anyone wishing to pay for seed from Vlastimil Pilous need only to type in his email address and then the amount owing in the send money section using PayPal it's that simple.
regards John.
-
Has anyone recieved a seed list from Vlastimil this year yet?
-
Yes, on Dec 21
-

I have been pondering this same issue, as at my bank an international transfer costs around 30 AUD and I received notice that my seeds have been posted. Wouldn't one call that bank gouging, rather than commission?
I have taken John's advice and used PayPal as one would for others.. Fingers crossed, it seems to have gone through. Dr Pilous must have an account.
Will keep you advised if I receive notice otherwise
Jacqui.

Hi all,
I have purchased seed from Dr Vlstimil a couple of times and I simply pay using PayPal and send payment direct to his email address this works fine.
cheers John.

I'm sure the recipient has to have a paypal account as well. Or am I just assuming that is how it works.

Yes, Lewis, that's right - if the person you are sending money to has no paypal account they will have to open one to be able to receive the money. So not a fair way to pay someone who has not specified paypal payment process enabled.
-
Also I hoped for a seed list, but I don't think there is one this year, at least I haven't seen it. I got a Christmas card from him in email, but I didn't open the attachment, I think it was just a card but one can't be too careful to open attachments you are not sure of.

There is a seed list, Leena. He sent one out on December 21st. Some one shared it a couple of posts back here: https://drive.google.com/file/d/0B74GKpOnhkpJeHMydEFMV01ucTQ/view?usp=sharing

Hi all,
Dr Vlastimil obviously does have a PayPal account otherwise I am sure I would have had a plea for payment by now, as I said I have purchased seed using this payment method for a couple of years now with NO PROBLEMS. John.
-
Yes, Vlastimil has a Paypal account, he just confirmed me that I am able to pay him in this way.

It was just as well to confirm that though, I reckon.

Damn it. Just sent my payment off to him. What email address did you use? Ill use it next year. Paypal is much more secure.

Well, for the moment, I still don't have used it, he just wrote me that I can use Paypal ;D I think that is with this email : vlpilous@seznam.cz John may confirm or I will confirm this evening, after trying this email address.
-
Hi Yvain,
thanks and yes that is Vlastimils email address to use for payment.
cheers John.
-
Maggi,
would I lie to you ;) ;) ;)
cheers John.
-
No intention to offend you, John - but check and check again is my motto! :)

I bought seed from Vlastimil just recently and had no problems, got the seed before payment and sent the money via internet bank transfer, all well and fantastic seed, YUM YUM

David, the link you gave takes you to last year's seedlist (2015-2016) ?
Paul
-
Sorry Paul, but I'm not aware of a later one.
-
I think he normally circulates his seed list right at the end of the year, so perhaps in the next week or 10 days.
-
I have got the list every year at 26th of December, last year 2-3 days earlier. So just a little bit of patience is necessary.
-
Just received this morning !
-
Is the new list available online somewhere?
-
Here it is
-
Brilliant! Thank you.
-
Thank you.
-
Thank you from me, too. :)
-
I'm very happy to have stumbled upon this list - lots of very interesting seeds (I had to be very restrained).
Thank you.
-
Has anyone recieved a seed list from Vlastimil Pilous ?
-
yes
-
still waiting....
-
Thank you sokol for the list.
I couldn't resist and ordered some peony seeds. I have found that his peony seeds were very good in previous years (though I managed to kill P.parnassica seedlings in their first year outside). Hopefully the first ones from him flower in 2020 here. :)
-

Did anyone get a response from mr. Pilous yet? I sent an email at the end of december, but so far nothing.:(
-
I mailed him, because i got no seeds and no information and got the answer below:
>Dear Mr. Sommer,
>
>I am very sorry, I have no seeds ordered for you. This year is paradoxial - my stocks of seeds are very small and I received extreme number of order (many directly first day!)
>For example: my stock of Paeonia beresowskyi was 2 packets, Daphne retusa 3 packets etc. Roscoeas - all very poor quality seeds this season, no distribution.
>I have only Arisaema tortuosum and Triostemum himalayanum now - it is under EUR 10.00.
>
>I apologize again.
>
>With best wishes
>Vlastimil Pilous

hmm how sad. I've sent him another email now too, hopefully I have more luck. :(
-

I'm sorry to hear this. :(
I got my seed order already January 17th (order made Jan 1st), only 5 packets, because some were already sold out by the time I ordered (like Paeonia beresowskyi). I got a confirmation email when the seeds were shipped to me, along with the amount to pay.
I hope he has a better crop of seeds next year.
-
I also got my seeds from V. Pilous. However, I did not order them personally. I always take part in the various orders of my botanical friends from the Arctic Alpine Garden. Now I quickly write the labels and will sow the seeds immediately.
