Title: Unkown Meconopsis
Post by: goworho on December 27, 2014, 06:16:56 PM
in the 68th seed distribution list there are two items that are unknown to me:
2671 Meconopsis punicea ‘Himal Sky’ and
2677 Meconopsis sulphurea.
Somebody here to enlighten me?

Haven't found any reference to Meconopsis sulphurea. The only Meconopsis cultivar by the name 'Himal Sky' is one of Meconopsis grandis.

Seems  a little more checking on the names might have been useful.

Meconopsis grandis 'Himal Sky' is the name which has, I believe - been given to the plant formerly known as ES104.  ( This is in the seedlist  as ... grandis ex ES104   seed number 2654)
Pictures from the RHS trials have ES104 listed as being 'Himal Sky' and ES104 was previously shown as being a "true grandis form "

As to the M.  sulphurea -  perhaps this is one of C.G-W's recent rehashes, or maybe  Alan Elliott  or Ian Christie can drop by and enlighten us!  :-\

Good morning we do indeed have Meconopsis sulphurea  this plant described by Chris Grey Wilson has been known for many yeas is very close to M. integrifolia. George Taylors monograph in 1934  suggests much confusion with this form. Peter Cox Glendoick gardens suggests differences at the seedling stage for me I have only seen young plants at Glendoick, I post a picture , cheers Ian the Christie kind

Where does M. pseudointegrifolia stand in this confusion, Ian ? Does it keep its name?

Hello Maggie, I am sure we do not need to change anything and if we get the chance to grow any of the Meconopsis integrifolia  or the recent M. sulphurea who can tell which is which no doubt gardeners will enjoy any, I have sown seed of M. sulphurea so watch this space, cheers Ian

Thanks for all the replies. It seems to be agreement  that regarding Meconopsis punicea ‘Himal Sky’ there must be a typo. As far as Meconopsis sulphurea is concerned I'm curious what will come out of the seeds (if I get some  ;))
