Title: The book "Blutenbildungen Beim Schneeglockchen: Galanthus Nivalis ...."
Post by: Alan_b on December 05, 2014, 10:49:42 AM
I came across this book: "Blutenbildungen Beim Schneeglockchen Galanthus Nivalis Und Samenformen Bei Der Eiche (1890) by Gustav Stenzel" whilst doing an online search.  It's available as a facsimile of the original and is widely offered for sale without any description of the contents.  Apart from 'snowdrops', it's beyond my meagre knowledge of German, or Google Translate, to render the title into sensible English.  Can anyone tell me what it is about?

No, I only have the title.  The book costs upwards of £11 in paperback, here http://www.amazon.co.uk/Blutenbildungen-Beim-Schneeglockchen-Galanthus-Samenformen/dp/1169686605 (http://www.amazon.co.uk/Blutenbildungen-Beim-Schneeglockchen-Galanthus-Samenformen/dp/1169686605) , for example.

Alan the Title says: Flowerformation in Snowdrops: Galanthus nivalis and seed forms of the Oak. This combination does not make sense to me but it is what it says. There would appear to be no indication as to how much space is devoted to the one and to the other so I would be hesitant in expecting too much on the snowdrop front.

The translation is fairly good. Only  "Bei der Eiche" should not be translated at all maybe its the name of a serial about nature themes. Next to the oak would be a translation.
So it would be
Seed and Flower variations with Galanthus nivalis Snowdrops
Bei der Eiche 1890
Author
Gustav Stenzel

Thank you, Axel.  That interpretation seems to make the most sense so far.  I wonder who the author, Gustav Stenzel, was?

no, no, no folks outside! the title means: flower variations of the snowdrops (Galanthus nivalis) and seed variations of the Oak (Quercus robur and Quercus petraea)

Gustav Stenzel was a botanical teacher in Breslau now Wrocław.

Hagen, my knowledge of the German language is definitely greater than my English  ;). But here I notice  every time some mix-up of the words "variation"and "formation".
My reading of the title is :

Blu(ü)tenbildungen Beim Schneegl(ö)ockchen: Galanthus Nivalis Und Samenformen Bei Der Eiche

Flower (Bloom) formations in Snowdrops: Galanthus nivalis And Seed Forms (variations) in Oaks

I am curious if the formation of flowers in Galanthus bulbs is the same as with other bulbous plants like tulips and takes place in the summer as well?

Der Titel ist ein wenig irreführend, ja?

It would make more sense to say Blütenbildungen beim Schneeglöckchen (Galanthus nivalis) und Samenformen bei der Eiche (Quercus pedunculata) without the colon after Schneeglöckchen, which appears in some examples, so it would read "Flower formation in snowdrops (Galanthus nivalis) and seed forms in the oak, Quercus pedunculata."
The author makes an analogy between the two. The book can be downloaded for free (leider, ganz auf deutsch) on Google Play.
Very heavy going, but lots of drawings of snowdrop flowers.

It was a periodical journal:

one journal had this title

and two chapters (Quercus pendulata now is Quercus robur)

It really is about two separate things, flower formation in snowdrops, and seed forms of the quercus. The colon (not present in the original German) makes it seem like it's all about snowdrops.
I only vaguely knew about Google Play. It looks like you can read new books there, for a price, but older texts, no longer copyrighted, can be read for free. For instance, Bunge's Die Gattung Acantholimon is there.
My aging eyesight does not care for an evening of cutting oncocyclus iris seeds followed by reading books on a computer .....

That's a fantastic piece of research, Hagen; thank you very much.  I have not yet had time to look up the Google Play version.
