Question from my son. Could anyone id the plant in this portrait?
I thought Eryngium??

Looks like it especially the larger photo on wikipedia

The name of the painting is Self Portrait with a Thistle, 1493 I don't think you can tell if the plant is Eryngium or a thistle. There is so little difference.

definitely Eryngium. Most likely E. campestre
