Title: Tulipa norvegica, also called Tulipa ×gesneriana 'Pilot'

Does anybody have a bulb spare of this tulip? Any of our Norwegian friends? I would like to buy one or three!

Ralph, i have Tulipa norvegica in my collection Tulips. The bulbs are allready in the ground now so I can swap with you coming summer when the bulbs are dormant again. Yours, Ruben

OK, think I have some to spare - but you have to wait till summer.
I have from two sources, one is the Botanical Garden at Milde, Bergen, Norway. Should be the real thing! 
The picture shows plants from the other source. Can't tell them apart though.

Yes, at least my plants are, but that could be due to the soil conditions.

Here are two pictures cut from the periodical Blyttia (which will be accessible online next year).
The stems seem to be stiffer on drier sites.

(Had to use Paint to save pictures in right format)

When stiff - a nice garden plant. How does it propagate in Norway? Does it set seeds in your cool and moist summer? I understand, it must be tolerant to constantly moist conditions. What about light requirements? And tolerance to organic soils?

It's interesting to learn about tulips naturalized so far North. I'm not aware of any such population in Poland.

It doesn't set seed as the pollen is sterile. However it sets lots of small offsets. It is mostly a garden plant and it is spread among gardeners and by soil from gardens. It is also very durable and tolerates a lot of different conditions so you will find it in old neglected gardens as well. It seems to be fairly resistant to pests too.

If you are interested I could send you some bulbs next summer.

Thanks for offer. I am definitely interested as most tulips do not want to stay for a longer time in my garden if I don't care for them (replanting etc).
