One of my daphne mezereum plants suddenly died after flowering really well in the spring. Now I've had a friend tell me that one of her Daphne's has behaved in exactly the same way. I looked on line and it appears it's some sort of fungus that attacks them. My question is, should I leave the stump or not? There is one shoot that looks healthy coming from the side of the stump.

Hi Chris!
I had a Daphne retusa who did so a decade ago. First died a branch, then another, then there was only one left. The branch has now formed a shrub that has become quite large.
Then I did not know anything about fungus at Daphne, otherwise I would probably remove the bush. My ignorance was good at that time, as I now have a nice bush.

Commiserations Chris, I know this won't help but it least it shows you are not on your own.

Indeed not, I had a beautiful D.'Eternal Fragrance' which flowered fantastically for three years and then turned up it's toes.

Over on the VRV Forum (http://www.vrvforum.be/forum/index.php?topic=11.msg66316#msg66316), Lily-Anne has shown a young 'Eternal Fragrance' which is flowering for the third time this year . Theo S. has mentioned that this cultivar also performs that type of remont flowering. I was thinking this might a be good cultivar to go for, tho' I had suspicions that it might be flowering itself to death - with your comment , Brian , I reckon that might be the case. :'(

Certainly that was my thoughts Maggi, it seemed to flower virtually non-stop. Of course being the mug that I am I did buy another which has flowered once and has no sign of repeat flowering...yet ;)
