Title: "Summer" weather 2014
Post by: Maggi Young on July 28, 2014, 03:17:26 PM
While we are enjoying remarkably warm sunny weather here in NE Scotland  I think there was some rain further south at the Rugby Sevens in Glasgow at the Commonwealth Games yesterday.

It appears that England is not faring so well  - this photo is from the BBC this morning

It was bad, haven't seen that much rain come down since Oct 2012, I had 42mm fall in 2.5 hours in Peacehaven.  At least the water barrels are now filled

Yes, If the weather turns to heat again full water barrels will be needed. Haven't heard long range forecast so don't know what chances are.

Two fences broken, looks like they were rotten and the wind did the rest.

In contrast, the Western Isles have been dry, sunny and calm today...perhaps too calm, as it's been a bit midgey today. Our constant breeze usually keeps them at bay  :( Hope you all stay safe.

Bright now in Aberdeen but blowy - aircraft coming overhead at very jaunty angles.

And this appears to have happened somewhere near Nairn :

Sweet Peas and Runner Beans blown over, the cover blown off brocoli and a dead birch tree in the ponies field broken off but nothing serious.  Oh I nearly forgot the top broken off my brother's ancient plum tree along with at least half his plum crop.

First day of spring here and it's Baltic. 11oC and just tipping down. Haven't had rain to speak of all winter, and just when the kids go off on national tournament week the heavens open! ::)

If you want to see the depressing result (ugh, I'd rather not!), this was at about 8pm on Tues., Sept. 9 Monday, Sept. 8th after 10-15 cm snow:
[attachimg=1]  [attachimg=2]

The snow remained on the ground overnight, and then it snowed another 10-15 cm through through the early hours on Wednesday, so that the roads and sidewalks were covered in slush this morning (along with complete snow cover elsewhere).  The snow has melted off the roads and sidewalks in my area now but is still ankle-deep wherever it sits on the ground.    :(

We've lost 2 trees so far - the trunk of the green ash in the backyard split pretty well to the ground on Monday night, and today the Caragana arborescens 'Lorbergii' has had all its branches broken off the trunk.   :P

Mmm, I guess you haven't cycled to work in the last few days, Lori?  ::)

Funny you have had this experience with the Caragana - we recently removed a couple of Caragana arborescens pendula from our front garden and were shocked to find how brittle the branches were. On inspection we saw that the centre of the wood was discoloured and seemed to be either diseased or dying but we couldn't determine why that would be the case.
The plants were not huge - about 2m tall with a canopy spread of around the same - they were approx 30 years old.
Having found the interior damage to them we felt a lot happier about having decided to remove them, since it seemed they might soon have collapsed anyway.

Lori,

What a mess! I heard about this storm. Somehow it does not seem completely unusual. My brother and I were caught in a storm in Glacier Park about the same time of year - 10th of September. 15 miles to the trailhead! No fun getting out.

It sounds like you had some major damage. How about the rest of your garden? Too early to tell? Around here a quick change to cold weather can cause a lot of damage as it did last December. Anyway hope for the best.

Yeah, it's great being close to the mountains for hiking, but on the other hand, it's also the reason the weather is so bloody awful around here!  ::)

Still snow on the ground in our area... some limbs broken on a couple of Swedish columnar aspens, but I expect the perennials will be generally okay, other than not quite as upright as they ought to be.

No, Maggi, the my faithful two-wheeled steed has been getting a rest in the garage all week!  Lots of the die-hards here are riding right through this nasty spell (but then, a lot of them ride through the winter too.   :o )

Well, updating my previous assumption... pretty well everything in the back yard is completely flattened, with long stems on perennials broken.  Okay in the long run, as in likely no permament damage, but it looks pretty awful.

Fire officials called in additional crews to help battle a blaze in Yosemite National Park that sent smoke into the park’s famed valley for the first time Tuesday, officials said, though the park and its entrances remained open."

This is another unfortunate wildfire. Not too large - but in the wrong spot. It is beautiful county up above Nevada Falls!

Same here Maggi it was a lovely day but once the sun dropped it got really cold. I got shouted at today was out for a nice walk and was stopped by an angry man saying I was trespassing . I explained that I was just out for a walk whilst my husband was golfing but was told in Ireland you can't walk where you want. Think I should have checked their rules, oh well at least he never shot me  ::) ;D
