Would love to go Maggi but it's a bit too far for us at the moment. Now if I could get my expenses paid for a bit of horticultural journalism... ;) Look forward to seeing pictures from the Show because there should be lots of summer alpines which are just our thing.

I'll go, it's only just up the road & I bought a lovely Crepis incana (from Aberconwy), a Campanula 'Lynchmere' & a little Verbascum (both from Robin White (Mr Daphne)) there last year, all looking beautiful in the garden now.

I'll be there exhibiting in the Novice section again and making teas and coffees.
Hopefully it wont be as hot as last year

Good for you , Helen - great to see how much fun you are clearly getting from exhibiting and being fully involved in the shows. Always the way to get most fun out of them I reckon.
Wonderfully British, isn't it, that even when the temperatures soar there is still constant demand for tea and coffee?!!! :)
Mind you, bit chilly here today so perhaps hot chocolate is in order   ;D  It did feel like summer yesterday.....

Monika W.  has shown a Jim McGregor  tweeted of his pic of Robin White's  Farrer medal winning plant of Daphne jasminea,  Delphi form, at the Tewkesbury show.

What a super plant!

I recommend everyone to watch Eric's slide show - almost as good as a visit to the show. A very wide selection of plants  to see  8)

Glad folks are enjoying them. There were obviously a lot more plants on show, but I was trying to take pictures of ones which I have not seen before, or of which I have not got good images. There were a lot of lovely Conifers and ferns which I did not take and the Sewing display by Jean Morris was beyond description.
Unlike the official photographers I have to take mine in the Hall, not always easy.

Looks like some lovely ferns exhibited Helen, were any from the Smethursts?  Shelagh is a dab hand at propagating them...

Hi Chris

Sorry I didn't really notice who was showing what apart from where I knew the person and then it stuck in my head better.  I don't know the Smethursts

Hi Margaret
I am a real fern fan with a rapidly growing collection so both those are on the want list as are the two pinus, if I can find a nursery that stocks them

The Great thing about ferns is how much fun it is to try growing them from spores  -  amazing what you can achieve with a bit of fern frond at the right time - lots of babies  :)  The Problem is the names which I can NEVER remember :P  I have more trouble with their names than any others though since I'm forgetting things at a rate of knots, soon I won't be able to remember any other names either!

Trying to think if I've seen Potterton's (http://www.pottertons.co.uk/pott/find.php) offer some of these conifers........ :-\

I thinkHartside (http://www.plantswithaltitude.co.uk/) may offer the ferns.

edit :wrong about Potterton's on those - just got side-tracked to some other stuff tho'  I fear..

Helen,
Sea Urchin is a P. strobus cultivar, not  P. mugo so that may be your hitch - five suppliers showing, see my post above yours.... #124 - or do you mean you've checked their lists and they haven't got  it in stock?

The names are on the plants but I am not sure how one can see them.

This single shots through them and you can see the names underneath.

Hi Margaret
I wondered about pinus mugo being correct despite it's label. Someone commented on my blog where I featured it that it was wrong. Thanks for the research, I might have to treat myself to one

Conifers are often subject to muddled naming at shows - well, lots of plants are! Happily, that is no barrier to the entry.  :)

We were interested to see a few cards at the Show indicating that a plant was a good garden plant as well as a Show plant. Very useful for the non-specialist visitor.

That's a very good idea.
Can often be quite tricky trying to explain to enthusiastic newbie why a Dionysia isn't a great plant for the front of a border!

Eric
I think the cards were interested at the London Alpine show by John Hill. I thought it was a fab idea

You can also agree or disagree with the cards. At London I think Verbascum dumulosum had a good garden plant label, which surprised its owner who had only grown it under glass. A good garden plant a few inches across may be quite different to the large plant on show.

Yes I thought this was a good idea too at the London Show (and could lead to some debate!) but it does beg the question of whether the Shows actually really can highlight the 'garden value' of many alpines. The outdoor display that the Czech Rock gardeners make in Prague does illustrate this beautifully (and I suppose is a little like - but very different to - the way plants are displayed at Chelsea, the difference being that it is put together by very many gardeners, rather like the Shows are as well). It's hard to imagine this way of displaying alpines and woodland plants in the UK because our traditions are so very different, but wouldn't it be interesting if something similar could be done? The garden that Ian Christie has described up in Forfar is an example.

Church yards are a good idea Tim, I remember the Natl Colln of dicentra used to be displayed in a church yard near York, dunno if it still is, but the Czech display was also in a church yard, and whereas there are not a lot of venues in large urban areas, there are usually church yards.  Mind you, they are open to the elements and as we know it can be quite a problem!
