I have been banished to the cold and snowy wastes of Chicago this week. Can anyone tell me if they have received the Monksilver list from Joe Sharman yet? I saw a note last week, from Brian I think, that the list should be out this week. My wife has confirmed that my copy hasn't turned up and I was wondering if it got lost in the post or if they haven't actually been sent yet.
If anyone has received it could they possibly e-mail me a copy via a Personal Message?
Thanks,
David

Perhaps the first person to get Joe Sharman's list could post it on the forum under this thread. I have so say, I haven't had a snowdrop list from Joe for ages. I always forget which nurseries automatically send you their next list when you order from them and which you have to keep sending for - so I keep dropping off mail-order lists!
-
I would have asked him at the RHS halls today - but I missed him by 5 minutes, as I went after work!
Last year my list from Mr Sharmon arrived on January 25th.
regards
John

You also missed me!!! But I left around 2:45.
-
Thanks for the replies. I also can't recall who sends out and who you have to request catalogues from.
I'm sure that I asked for a list but have not had any e-mail contact with Joe since before Christmas. I see from other postings that I'm not the only one. I guess that Joe must be very busy.
I'll get my wife to keep checking the post and will update if the situation changes.

Hi Alan
I went after work, so got there at 3.35. I didn't realise that the Joe Sharmon and his snowies would leave so early, after being considered by Joint Rock. It looks likely that I am going to miss them next month too :'(
I did take some photos of the Avon Bulbs stand to put on here - but when I got home I found they were blurred, I should have used the flash!

This afternoon I had sight of the list so I should imagine it is imminent, watch the post. There are some nice ones on it but not great numbers available.
-
I have a copy of the list now. Can I paste it here or would that be copyright infringement?

Alan, I'm sure Joe Sharman wouldn't object to having his snowdrops for-sale list seen by as many potential customers as possible - especially as some of us growers don't seem to be on his regular mailing list (at least I'm not).
There wouldn't be a copyright issue with something that's intended as a give-away list to customers to solicit orders. It's implied that it's for wide dissemination - in fact that's the point of it.
-
By the way, I believe Galanthus nivalis 'Green Light' is one that I found and collected with Joe Sharman's help (he got permission from the owner to remove some bulbs and we both took some). So if anybody is tempted to pay Joe £40 for one of these, send me a personal message first and I will see if we can trade.
-
oh,what a list! ;D ;D ;D can you resist buying?
and so many I never heard of.
what to think of galanthus 'nothing special'for 7 pounds,anyone interested :-\ ::)
-
Hi Loes
'nothing special' is nothing special when seen as single plants - but apparently great in a clump due to its floriferousness (is that a word?) - ie lots of flowers. I got it last year from Wisley, so my single one is nice, but still at the nothing special stage ::)

A second attempt to send the descriptions Joe gives:
'Angelique' long outers and inners on this semi-poculiform variety. The mark is divided into two. Newish from France.
'Bunch' a spiky nivalis with many long white petals in a dense bunch. The inner most will be green-tipped.
'Ecusson d'Or', yellow flowers with yellow tips to the outers. Needs to settle down to show its full character. New from France.
'Green Light' a nivalis with bright shining green leaves and green-tipped outer petals.
'La Moriniere' a double nivalis, very early with very neat regular flowers, vigorous. New from France.
'Llo 'n' Green' the earliest green-tipped nivalis. Green tipping is-variable from season to season.
'Narwhal' a walrus type, but with whiter flowers that continue on reliably into April 'N etherhall Yellow' a vigorous yellow nivalis selected many years ago by Timothy Clark Esq
'Quad' a double nivalis which usually has only four outers followed by a ring of four inners and then a full centre.
'Woozle' a bizarre double spiky with green tips. The flowers are dense and globular unlike the other spikys. It often has extra petals growing from the ovary.
'Orleton' an incredibly vigorous hybrid clumping ferociously. Plicatus x nivalis 'Caroline' a plicatus which when growing well has two flower per stem. Selected by Bill Clark.
'Lambrook Greensleeves' a plicatus with bright shining green leaves. Vigorous. 'Richard Blakeway-Phillips' a superb byzantinus which is early and has huge flowers. Often two flowers per bulb. Stands out amongst the crowd.
'Robyn Janey' a hybrid with two flowers per bulb, very long pedicels and very long claws. Really distinctive with two elongated eye spots.
Leucojum vernum 'Green Lantern' a selection with much greener flowers. The green tips extend back to cover 1/3 of the tepal.
Leucojum vernum 'Janus' reliably flowering in the first week of January. A vagneri selection.
Leucojum vernum 'Milly' a bizarre form with six normal tepals surrounded by one to six extra tepals arising from the ovary. Late with very dark green leaves.

Thanks Alan, Just got back from Tesco's to find the postman had been and scanned it all in ready...pipped at the post! ;)
-
I think this is probably the snowdrop Joe Sharman has named 'Green Light'. I cannot get all of it in focus and my snowdrops are a little dirty after all the rain we have had here. I have three slightly different forms but they all share the common features of 'shining green leaves' and green-tipped outer petals. The leaves 'shine' rather better in sunlight.
-
Alan and Brian,
Thanks for your efforts in scanning the list in. I returned from the doctor's to find the list waiting for me. I'm glad that you posted the list as I would have had to type it out longhand!

Best list this year
-
I take it Galanthus nivalis 'Ecusson d'Or' and other rarities, even at those prices, will be already sold out?
-
well it's like anything from a new snowdrop to a new house on a new desireable development - first come first served - but the list contains many lovely snowdrops that will make a very exciting collection
-
I noticed a few of the new ones are from France. Are there Galanthophiles
there also, or do English ones pop over for the weekend and search old
churchyards?
-
Maggi has a chocolate well!
Not quite, Anthony, it's more a bunker. :-[

It's not for me to say whether or not the French can be afflicted with the white fever, Diane... but with the Channel Tunnel... I wouldn't be surprised if the English addicts weren't doing exactly that! It'll give them something to do at this time of year when it isn't really weather for hunting for old farmhouses to restore!!
-
The main English growers head over to France post Galas and search. There is one English guy resident there - Mark Brown
-
John, but is'nt that true of all snowdrops. Some are a bit more special than others but even the lowliest are are fantastic when seen in a group.
-
Coming out of my normal lurking mode to ask if anbody knows how much Monksilver Nursery charges for post and packaging ? I have a small but steadily growing number of snowdrops and have been picking up a lot of really useful information from this forum :)
-
Anna
Post and packing: up to 5 bulbs £4.00; up to 10 bulbs £6.00; up to 20 bulbs £10.
I hope that this helps and welcome out of the shadows :)
-
Many thanks for the welcome and such a speedy reply David :) If I can be cheeky and ask another question I am best making out a limited cheque if I send an order ? I see you are not far from my home town of Peterborough.
-
Hi Anna,
are you Anna of the 'Walrus'?
that`s not much for sending costs(saves money for bulbs).it`s a pity sending overseas is much, much more(I presume, with others that is)
-
Hello Anna
Yes you are right about a limited cheque
"If your total is £45, sign and date your cheque, make it payable to Monksilver Nursery. Don not write any numbers or words in the amount line or box. Instead between the vertical lines in the centre of the cheque write 'not to exceed £45.00)"
-
Hello Loes - yes indeed it is Anna of 'The Walrus' :) It's a small world ! Your bulb is plumping up nicely now and I will send you a photo soon.
Thank you very much Brian for confirming that I shouls send a limited cheque with an order to Monksilver Nursery.

That's not what it says on my order form!
"Postage: Flat rate £1.00 per plant. Minimum order £15"

Hi Alan
I've just looked at the scanned copy of the list that a kind SRGC'er has sent me - my Mr Sharmon's list has not yet arrived to my house yet :(
Postage on the copy I have is different on 2 different pages - so with the postage rate that Alan has seen that makes three different ways to pay for delivery... ???

Yes. I see how the confusion has arisen.
There is an Order Form where it says "Postage: Flat rate £1 per plant" and a sheet entitled "Galanthus Availability List" where it says "Post and packaging: up to 5 bulbs, £4.00; up to 10 bulbs, £6.00; up to 20 bulbs, £10.00" and also explains the rather complicated procedure for writing a check to cover the possibility that some of the bulbs you wanted are sold out".
I had an early morning telephone conversation with Joe this morning in which he admitted to being a "lurker" on this forum so perhaps he can step in to clarify but if I was asked to take a guess I would think the second alternative was what was intended.
Joe also said that he did not mind me posting his list on this forum, so that's good!
"Galanthus Availability List
Valid from 23 January 2008 to 30 January 2008 Please order as soon as possible
Orders received after 2 February will not be accepted Orders accepted in order of receipt. First come first served.
If you are coming to the Galanthus Gala in Shaftesbury you can collect your orders from there. Please let me know if you intend to do this.
Orders will be posted as soon as possible. Prices in Pounds Sterling. Please send cheques to Monsilver Nursery. See address helow. Cheques should be open and limited. This is because we may not be able to supply everything that you want. For example, if your total is £45.00, sign and date your cheque, make it payable to Monksilver Nursery. Do not write any numbers or words in the amount line or box. Instead between the vertical lines in the centre of the cheque write "not to exceed £45.00". "
For some reason my scanner cannot cope with the centre of the page when converting to text but John posted that bit already.
-
Glad to see that the confusion has been sorted out. I am now back at work and therefore have limited access to the Forum during work hours and hence my tardy reply to Anna's follow up question.
-
It's arrived, it's arrived! I was feeling left out there! Now..... what can I afford?..... Not a lot :(
Does it look like you are on for tomorrow David?

John surely there are affordable snowdrops on the list?

Yep - we'll be there...although there'll be lots of coughing and sniffing.

I shall make a decision after I see how much I spend in Gloucester tomorrow!...
Yep - we'll be there...although there'll be lots of coughing and sniffing.
Excellent! We can have a sniffing competition.
-
Re Monksilver: do they accept payment by credit card?
Paddy
-
It doesn't say so Paddy, as there are so few available ..here's the first page
-
No, Brian, it doesn't look like they accept credit card. Sterling cheque, in line with their instructions, from Ireland is not possible.
-
Hi Paddy
they accept Euro's - see the post from Germany above.
Don't make yourself bankrupt!
John
-
Thanks all for the further information about postage and packaging charges - it was most useful :)
-
Hello Anna I give Jo Sharman a hand from time to time and if you wanted to order from him and avoid postage you could collect from me in Wansford, not too far from Peterborough I guess, just say to be collected by Carole
-
Carole as in Forbes and Carole? Hello from the Irish 3!
-
Hi Mark
Yes it is. I have just returned from a weekend in the potteries and am catching up on what is happening. Only snowdrop lamps at Moorcroft, certainly out of my price range. I need to wait for daylight again before I can check what is happening in the garden. I certainly want to check if my golds are losing the lime green colouring or not. Sara Dumont and Trumps were looking good when I left though, sorry but I am far too technophobic for photos. I understand we won't be seeing you at the Gala, probably somewhere else before too long though.
-
Yes sadly we are missing our second Gala in a row but will be back next year. This year's Gala clashes with our snowdrop day. We have already had some invitations so will probably bump in to you somewhere
