Looking at the Malvern Show results : ...... I see that ......
"In the Botanical Art competition Janet Dyer, from Midlothian, was named Best Botanical Artist for her depiction of non-native plant invaders of Britain."
Also in the Botanical Art Section, Silver-Gilt Grenfell was won by Karyn Dalrymple of
Edinburgh for (paintings) of Climbing garden plants within my garden.
Dianne Sutherland of Macduff in Banffshire won the Bronze Grenfell Award for her depiction of Reproductive mechanisms in flowers.
Among the Gold medal winners in the Floral marquee are Avon Bulbs and Ian Butterfield .
Jon is correct - I was sidetracked by the mention elsewhere of the Villaggio Verde garden - this name is also involved this year
Seen some other mention of awards so the damn things must be somewhere!
Aha! Found them via the RHS - http://www.rhs.org.uk/shows-events/malvern-spring-gardening-show/awards (http://www.rhs.org.uk/shows-events/malvern-spring-gardening-show/awards)

I'm sorry to have to point out that the results linked to in Maggi's posting earlier are for last year's show (2013). I don't think the 2014 results have been posted yet.

She can read the tea leaves on Blackpool Pleasure Beach though

That's just a sideline for when it's too wet for the donkey rides, David. ;)

"The winner of the Best Show Garden award goes to Graduate Gardeners Ltd, for their Bringing Nature Home garden, designed with a contemporary feel but with naturalistic planting. This garden also won a gold medal, as did the Villaggio Verde garden, En su Casa en la Playa, At Home on the Beach."

Best Exhibit in the Malvern Floral Marquee: Drointon Nurseries - with Primula auriculas
Most Creative Exhibit in the Malvern Floral Marquee: Crescent Plants who won a Silver Flora medal with another display of Primula auricula ( I'm assuming that these are both displays of what we in the SRGC would call "auriculas" rather than two displays of species P. auricula ::) )

D'Arcy & Everest have tweeted this photo of their alpine trough display at Malvern - the were awarded a silver gilt medal - tho' their tweet (https://twitter.com/DarcyEverest/status/464440375265230848/photo/1)says "silver guilt" ;D

Brings back fond memories.
I lived in Malvern for 26 year and attended most of the shows.
-
Avon Bulbs have had well-known visitors to their stand today -
[attachimg=1]
Princess Royal at Malvern
- Avon have tweeted that they will appear on Gardeners' World tonight.
-
Wasn't sure that I spotted much of Avon's stand tonight- did see a couple of Allium that could have been from their stand I suppose - did I miss something?
That frilly Geum 'Roger's Rebellion' which comes from Roger Proud of East of Eden nursery in Cumbria was fun - he's got some other pretty little Geums too- and he gives them names for people like me to appreciate - like 'Maddy Prior' http://www.east-of-eden-nursery.co.uk/ (http://www.east-of-eden-nursery.co.uk/)
The dark reddish Geranium cinereum 'Melody' from Border Alpines was a stunner - not surprised Carol Klein bought three! http://www.borderalpines.co.uk/plants.html (http://www.borderalpines.co.uk/plants.html)
-
As usual when they stick to the plants fine but the Mr's Don and Swift prancing about on grass walls and through double doors...... tedious to the extreme. Speaking of tedious last weeks Beechgrove was sure to win the Tedious prize for tediousness.
-
Yeah coverage of plants wasn't good. They said they were going to look at the best plants - two each I think from memory
Garden Show Ireland yesterday was a load of c**p and not worth £10 entrance fee
Chelsea coverage starts on Monday :-\

Is the Flemish Rockgarden Society already been spotted?

What a gorgeous display. I would have given them Platinum at the very least!

Who, where????

Who, where????
We have/had a busloadparty of 25 VRV members present today at the Malvern show, Maggi !
Unfortunately I couldn't be with them, but I'm sure they will have had a great day. :D
-
Och! I think I did know about the Channel Hoppers trip planned but I forgot. Yes, I am sure they will be enjoying the trip - I expect the bus is a nice BIG one with lots of room for plants, eh?!
Think of the money you have saved by staying at home, Luc. ;)

:'( :'( I'm sure I missed a lot of fun, Maggi... :'( :'( Still, there will be other opportunities ! :D :D
And about the bus.... we had organised it in such a way, that there was ample space to take home one or two (or many more ;D) plants...

I'm sure I heard that after the last VRV bus trip to the UK the bus company had to renew all the chassis of the bus because the weight of plants was so great the wheels were sticking out sideways ............... :o ::) ;) :D?

Don Peace has tweeted (https://twitter.com/DonPeace)a photo of the Farrer Medal plant, Rohodendron 'Sarled' and its happy growers Ron & Hilary Price.

Huge congratulations to East Lancashire Group stalwarts, Ron and Hilary Price on their very well-deserved third Farrer Medal AND their equally well-merited FIFTH GOLD BAR, which were both achieved at this show. Not satisfied with such glorious exploits, this lovely couple from Eccles also gained the 'Best in Show' at our local group show last evening (with their Farrer Medal winning exhibit).
OUR CONGRATULATIONS TO TWO OF OUR FAVOURITE GROUP MEMBERS.
-
Oh my word, an even more successful day at Malvernfor Ron and Hilary than I imagined- and more last evening too - further congratulations needed for sure!!

P.S. Sorry my little cheerleading friend is somewhat hyperactive- I made the mistake of letting her share a strong sugary coffee....... :-[

Hi
I have just posted a rather interminable account of the AGS show at Malvern Spring Festival to the AGS website here.
http://www.alpinegardensociety.net/discussion/atshows/Malvern+Show+th+May+/19584/ (http://www.alpinegardensociety.net/discussion/atshows/Malvern+Show+th+May+/19584/)
Of particular note was the competition for troughs and displays about alpine plants by local schools, organised by the show secretary.

Yes, I thought the involvement from the schools was a great initiative from Ross.
Keeping their interest may prove tricky, but it's a great start.
-
The trick is probably engaging the interest of the teachers! And there always have been a good number of these in the alpine groups, so there is a good link there. What would be even nicer would be to stimulate ongoing interest from students later in their studies, because plants are hardly of little relevance in all sorts of ways. We have contacted various schools and colleges (and also University Departments) re. the talk from David Gwynne-Evans that we have arranged in June. It will be very interesting to see if this bears fruit (I hope so because we would like to have a good audience for his talk - and it is highly relevant in a world where the environment and conservation of plants gets strong billing). It's always really nice when people visit our garden with their children, and equally so at the Alpine Shows, because a few of us actually became fascinated by these plants at an early age and these will be the people who take the societies on now too.
