-
A little damp at the moment (exhibitors who came up from the south yesterday brought the rain with them) but due to brighten up in mid-morning for yet another sunny day in Nairn.
-
Home from Nairn after a lovely day at a super show. Almost had to swim our way up there through persistent rain but when we got to Nairn it was merely damp and the day improved greatly.
Last time I attended and judged there it was still simply a local show and not a full SRGC affair. The venue is every bit as nice as I remember and the show hall was looking really good.
Section 2 was well supported with some super plants - including some from one first time exhibitor- the Forum's Ivan McConachie.
Neither the BD nor myself managed to remember to take a camera - seems getting three westies and ourselves ready for an early start is too much for us! We're out of practice at the show departure routine lately. :-X
Ian and I judged in different sections - too much danger of a punch-up otherwise, so instead he sailed round with Julia Corden and Elspeth Mackintosh and I was able to argue instead with Ian Christie and Harley Milne! ;)
Best plant in Section 2 was a fresh Lewisia cotyledon hybrid shown by Olive Bryers
Ivan McConachie's Saxifraga 'Pixie' was the best plant from a first- time exhibitor.
Sam Sutherland won the trophy for best primula with a large pan of Primula rusbyi
The best bulb trophy went to Narcissus x cazorlanus from Carole and Ian Bainbridge.
The best plant from a member resident in the Highland or Moray Groups areas was judged to be a fine pan of Pleione from Francis and Margaret Higgins from Cromdale. Berriedale.
A Certificate of Merit was awarded to a pan of Loiseleuria procumbens, full of tiny flowers, grown by Ian the Christie kind.
The trophy for best ericaceous plant went to Andromeda polifolia this was grown by Snapper Stan - who will have photos for us in the next day or so.
So, which plant won the Forrest Medal?
Well it was the delightful Andromeda from Stan da Prato - Stan's first Forrest Medal, but not, I hope, his last!
As you will see from Stan's photos when they appear , there were many good plants on display- some not quite at their peak and one or two just a day beyond perfection on close inspection - but the overall effect of the hall was bright and colourful. The cut flower section with classes for narcissus and tulips was placed by a window and was a treat in the morning, and by the time we made our early retreat mid afternoon, the tulips were nearly all open as if enjoying a warm day in the sun! There was a club plant stall which did a roaring trade, as, it seemed to me, did Ardfearn and Rumbling Bridge, who both had a grand selection for sale.
Local members were busy helping Carol and David to see the day ran smoothly and what a good job they all did.
Thanks for a lovely day, Highland Folkies!
It was lovely to catch up with so many friends from the area that I have not seen for too many years and, not having been to any shows this year since the Dunblane Early Bulb Day, lots of other pals, too. 8)

Hello all, yes a great day at Nairn I was kept firmly in hand by Maggie really special to see both Ian and Maggie any way the Forrest medal was won bt super snapper Stan I post a selection of pictures with the First being Stan with his first Forrest medal well don, cheers Ian the Christie kind.

Next lot, Ian

Some pictures of principal award winners. The Askival trophy for best pot of bulbs went to Carole & Ian Bainbridge for Narcissus X cazorlanus which was also part of their winning three pan entry in Class 2. Sam Sutherland also had a very good three pan entry and from it his Primula rusbyi took the Culloden Cup for best primula and I believe was considered for the Forrest medal. Ian Christie's Loiseluria procumbens -sometimes called the mountain azalea - was the best plant in the class for Scottish natives and received a merit certificate.
-
The Highland show has a very impressive section 2 which actually had more plants than section 1. The Roslyn-Shirras tankard for most points went to Francis & Margaret Higgins for a fine pot of Pleoine- they also took the Weir trophy for best exhibit by a member of the Highland & Moray groups with another Pleoine which they showed in section 1. Olive Bryers has been a long term supporter of the show and took the Dunbarney salver for best plant in section 2 with a colourful Lewisia. Hamish Mackintosh had the best plant in section V with Primula Drumcliffe. Finally Ian McConachie received the prize for the best plant from a new exhibitor with Saxifraga Pixie.

a quick tour of the section 2 benches.

moving round....

A few more pictures from the show, a long drive home very pleased to get several red tickets, cheers Ian the Christie kind
-
..and more including section V and the classes for cut flowers which widen the appeal of the show to those not able to exhibit in sections 1 or 2.
the red handled scissors at the back of the nice little floral arrangement were not part of that display but left by a careless exhibitor ie myself.

now some views of section 1

Some views at judging time. Not all the time allocated for judging is actually spent looking at the plants. First tea must be taken. Eventually a couple of judges get as far as the first bench but then proceed to have a conversation. This is all so tiring more tea is needed. Eventually they look at the plants. They usually divide into two teams of judges to speed things up - essential after all the time taken over the tea- so the show can open to the public by midday. Meanwhile the stewards wait patiently to affix stickers on the cards of the prize-winners.
-
People among the plants as both exhibitors and public look at the results.

A huge thank you to all the folk who helped to make yesterday's Show such a success. I hope more folk will be encouraged to make the trip north to exhibit next year and am grateful for those who did. Thanks to our fine team of judges who judged so speedily we were able to open the Show early and huge thanks to the team from the Highland & Moray groups who worked away at all the various job that have to be done at a Show. This was the second year of having a Section V for local gardening clubs and groups to exhibit in and the Nairn Gardening Club members put some interesting plants on the benches.
If Francis & Margaret Higgins continue to win first's at the rate they did yesterday they will soon be playing with the 'big boys and girls' full time!

Looks like it was a super show again. Thanks to Stan for snapping it so we can see. Well done organisers, bet you're breathing a sigh of relief after all that work. Quite interesting to see that our Mme Moderator/judge takes it so seriously she inspects the plants from behind the benches, or perhaps you were just looking for a missing pooch?

It was a super show, Christine- as has been said , Section 2 was very well supported which is always a pleasure to see.
I must confess that I will often get around to the back of a bench to see what a plant looks like from the other side - no hiding place from this Miss Marple! That particular table made it easy because it was just a little free standing section. I have been known to trot half way round the hall to get to the other side of a double bench for a better look - I hate it when the benches are against a wall :D
-
Caption for Maggie's picture, I am sure this would fit in my handbag but can I sneak it out?, cheers Ian the Christie kind
-
'Tight lid on this box of choccies'!!!!
"Fish box or real"?
'A smidgeon to the right and a tweak to the left … perfect for the photograph … Oh sugar, no camera"!!!

Thanks Christine, everything went very smoothly and the whole team did a great job and, yes, it is always good when it is over!

Maggi discovers the textured coating on the trough has been put on with superglue.

Nairn is very fortunate in that one of its residents run a local newsy web-blog page on the internet which has been very supportive of our club and the show. For some great pictures run the flicker 'slide show' link on the show report.

You will easily spot the break when the reporters pictures change to ones that I submitted!

If Sandy ever hangs up his keyboard we now have a worthy successor. A very nice report, Stan, thank you.

Hopefully Sandy will continue for many years yet -it's good to have different perspectives.
