Bearded iris season has begun here with two forms of Iris pumila. The yellow one opened on April 18, a seedling raised by George Hildebrandt, seed from the SIGNA seed exchange, donated by Milan Blazek of the Czech Republic. The violet one is from a US alpine nursery, origin unknown, but a great performer here.

Iris suaveolens

and a very nice form too Philip
-
Very nice Iris suaveolens clump, Philip. I'm still working on persuading this species to be happy here.
Photos from this evening: the violet pumila shown in my earlier post, a clump of I. pumila taurica, and miniature dwarf bearded cultivar 'Rosa Brooks'.
-
Two more Iris pumila forms that opened yesterday: a yellow and brown one that I got a few years ago labeled as Iris hoogiana (!) and 'Royal Wonder', introduced by Carol Coleman in 2013.
-
Iris lutescens-from seed sown Jan '13
-
A special treat today: Iris pumila ex Sevan Lake, Armenia. Seeds from Josef Jurasek in 2010; first bloom!
-
Opened this morning: Iris attica, also raised from Jurasek seed ordered in 2010. (The coin is 2.5 cm diameter)
-
Second Iris attica seedling, from the same batch of seed as the previous one.
-
More Armenian Iris pumila seedlings blooming today.

I.reichenbachii

Some lovely Iris on here
This is my I. attica and having the best show of flowers ever. Could it be due to being kept under glass these days combined with the heat last July?
-
Splendid I. attica Mark! If you are in New Zealand, how are they blooming now?
-
Here's an Iris suaveolens that came into bloom today, plant from Janis.
-
Iris sp. aff. [reichenbachiinex Vardar Gorge Macedonia, originally thought to be perhaps a tetraploid Iris reichenbachii, now judged to be perhaps a hybrid between I. reichenbachii and I. pumila. The first photo is one of the two collected clones, the second a seedling from cross-pollinating the two.
-
My iris seedling bed today. The two plants in front are I. attica, the others are I. pumila. All grown from seed obtained from Josef Jurasek in 2010.

I. reichenbachii from Mt. Vikos, Greece

standard dwarf bearded iris 'Kaching'

A couple I. aphylla cultivars: 'Ahlburg' and 'Slick'

miniature dwarf 'Icon' and standard dwarf 'Bluebeard's Ghost'

Hi here is a photo of a small bearded iris, I'm not sure what variety it is but it flowers it's socks off and I look forward to see it each spring.

More I.reichenbachii from Dadia

Melvyn how wonderful to be able to see all the different colours. Such beautiful photos.
-
How tall are these in their natural habitat Melvyn.
-
Wow Melvyn - what a wonderful range of I. reichenbachii forms. I'm envious!
-
tetraploid miniature tall bearded iris 'Say Red' (from Iris aphylla breeding)
-
How tall are these in their natural habitat Melvyn.
They seemed to be quite variable, in the same region of Northern Greece some had already flowered with well developed see pods and were no more than 10cm tall whereas the plants in flower at Dadia were nearer 20cm

Hello fermides,
I may be wrong but I find your 'Jallab' looks surprisingly like 'Omar's Gold' that is much smoother hafted than 'Jallab'. Compare the photos of both on Wiki irises.
-
Here is 'Omar's Gold' (Boswell). Superb arilmedian, very floriferous, with foliage always very clean and healthy.
-
Hi Lawrence,
I've looked at the pics on the American Iris Soc's wiki and I think that some of them may be mis-identified! The description for 'Omar's Gold' is yellow standards and some of the pics show a mauve/lavender standard which is what I think 'Jallab' should have. Mine definitely has mauve/lavender standards and not yellow,
