There was a Hepatica exebithion at the bothanical garden Munich on the weekend from 7th to the 9th of March as some of you may know. It was an exebithion with a show of many plants and some plants for sale as well as there were some lectures at satureday. I was there at Friday and Satureday and enjoyed the weekend I was long looking foreward to already.
I want to show you some of the impressions I got at the exebithion and tell yo something about it.
I got up pretty early to be there on time at 9 am and headed for Munich. As I stood in front of the gates of the (still not opened) bothanical garden it was even 15 minutes to early and I was the first one there. When it was 9 they opened the gates and I went in with some others that had gathered until than. I very fast went to the greenhouse in wich i knew the Hepaticas were located and the weekend begun ;D.
A gorgeous private Hepatica collection was shown in pretty green colored claypots. I did not count them and it is hart to tell how many they were when everything you see are just flowers but I think there were about 100 showplants. Hepatica nobilis, transsilvanica, japonica, henryi, media, eurasiatica, schlyteri, asiatica, pubescens, maxima, pyrineica and insularis were shown in the greenhouse. Double, semidouble and singleflowered varieties.
Andreas Händel, as one of the Hepatica seller, brought some showplants himselve aswell. Beautiful xmedia and transsilvanica. He also sold some really nice Trillium cloropetalum and different adonis corydalis and Eranthis. But manly he sold his own collected and crossbreeded hybrids. He mainly grows completely hardy clones (well hardy to german winter so 6-7) and thats why he mainly sold Hepatica transsilvanica, like „Schwanensee“ or „Elison Spence“ nobilis like „Tausendschön“, xmedia like „Avatar“ or „Tausendschön“ and xeurasiatica like „Prof. Friedrich Hildebrand“ and „Rötgelbüttler Röschen“. He also sold his extremely beautifull and big book about the Hepatica that I can truly recommend to any Hepatica-friend, even if its written in german the photos are simply stunning. Andreas Händel sold his plants for very reasonable prices and gave plenty of good advise for free ;).
The second Hepatica-seller was Susanne Peters (Jürgen Peters was not there because of his health, but he is recovering already as I heard) from the great Nursery Alpine Peters. She is a very nice person and comes up with all her knowledge if it is to answer crossbreeding questions even if she mentioned that she is not so deep into Hepatica as her husband Jürgen.
Alpine Peters brought a lot of plants to sell. Beautiful and healthy plants. They cind of came up with the varietes that were still missing. They showed and sold (not all) Hepatica japonica (very many of them), asiatica (the simble white form), maxima (the simble white form), nobilis (doubles like „colonel typ.5“ and different blue plenas), pubescens like Tenjinbai and pyrineica and aswell the hybrids schlyteri like „Blue Max“, eurasiatica like „Mandy JP“ and media like „Babsi JP“.
They also sold Jürgen Peters book about Hepatica, wich I can also recommend even if the focus lays not so much on plantportraits. As well as they sold japanese Hepatica Magazines showing incredible latest crossings.
As you can imagine now a Hepatica enthousiast or even somebody new to Hepatica was in a flower paradise and very impressed by all thous beautys. :o :o :o :D ;D 8)
Sure I wont leave you without a photo of this spectacle, I will show you some now that you did or did not read my little introduction. Enjoy the photos wich I am happy to share with you!

Like this exebithion started I want to end it, with the second Hepatica bowl that marked the end of the exebition in Munich as well.
I hope you like the photos and feel a little bit like you are caught in a Hepatica dream. ;) :)

Perfect photos, Simon - the 'Shinku' in post 16 is the best red I have seen.
Did you not forget to show us the extra nobilis and henryi ?
-
Simon, thank you so much for this great report if this event.
You must have had a great time in Munich!!!
Lina.

Lovely photographs Simon. It looks to have been a fabulous event, and reminds me of the Hepatica that Wisley held a few years ago, although they had nothing like the 'hillside' display you showed.
Like Maggi, I thought that 'Shinku' is a wonderful red, and like a number of other plants you had pictures of, is now on my wish list. :)

-
Incredible show !! Waoooouu ! :o

Thank's for excellent pictures . ;)

Thank you, it is nice to see that many people share the same enthusiasm and passion.
I have to admit that I did spend a `little`bit of my savings in some hours, but I think it was totally worth it ;D
And Maggi you might have overlooked the blue freckles (wich is a nobilis) and the henryi alba plena ;)
The lectures at satureday were very interesting aswell, Samantha Spendlove talked about the Ashwood Hepatica collection and different journeys to see different Hepaticas in their habitat. She showed great photos. She also showed photos of H. falconeri what was very interesting.
Andreas Händel talked about his breeding work and the stunning severin-series he was abeld to breed from a mother plant he got from Severin Schlyter.
Gunhild Poulsen was swell talking about her great breeding work the noblisxjaponica she showed were incredibly beautiful. Obviously she is a very talented breeder.
Gunther Kleinhans talked about his journeys to Japan and the japanese Hepatica exhibitions aswell as about the breeding work in Japan in general.
A very informative satureday. ;D

Hello Simon just found your fantastic pictures the Hepaticas are stunning, I like so many others would like to buy maybe all of them but please did you ask about the prices? I am sitting down probably way above what we can afford any way great to see the pictures thank you, cheers Ian the Christie kind.
-
Thank you very much Ian, to be honest I did not ask for the price. They were so many of them and I think they would be very different. But for example kagura was sold for about 50 €. Sure there were way more special japonicas and even if its hard to estimate I think from the point of view of a collector or a serious seller some of them could sure cost up to 500 €.
The most of the show-plants were relatively old already so the price propbably already decreased. Gunther Kleinhans, one of thouse who did a talk, told us about the price-conditions in Japan. He told us about a lovely Hepatica japonica with white outer Petals and deep blue inner petals that just covered the middle of the flower (he showed great pictures). Its price in the first year it was presented to the `outside World`it did cost about 9000 €. He asked the breeder again some years later and its price was about 1800 €. Sure this is still much money but the price dropped rather clearly. So one as a `normal gardener`or also as a enthousiast that is not sitting on money should always wait if one is patient enough.
To come back to the plants on the pictures I showed. I think if you, or somebody else really wanted to buy one clone of them it is defenitely possible. But you will still have spend a relatively huge amount of money. Some are lucky and are abeld to swap with the collectors, wich also is a very good possibility to obtain plants like this.
Even if I could not give you a clear price I hope I could answer your question more or less suitable Ian. :)

Thank you so much for all the photos Simon.
Make my heart leap to see so many beautiful hepaticas.
