Title: Shows around the country- 22nd March 2014
Post by: Maggi Young on March 18, 2014, 11:53:56 AM
Wherever you are in the UK this weekend, I hope that you are able to reach one ofthe super evetns that will be taking place.  In Scotland , the SRGC has the Kincardine Show (obtusely known as the "Stirling"  show! ) -
Stirling Show (Kincardine) 22 March
Next SRGC Event is the 'STIRLING' SHOW  #  22nd March  Note this Show is held in KINCARDINE !!
** VENUE**:Kincardine Community Centre Anderson Lane, Kincardine Fife, FK10 4SF.  :)

In England you have a great choice between the AGS shows in East Lancs  and Kent, home shows respectively of those well known forum faces, Cliff Booker and Tim Ingram ( to pick two at random!!)  :

East Lancashire AGS Show - Saturday, 22 March 2014 - 12.00 noon to 4.00 pm  held at The Riverside, Whitworth Civic Hall, Market Street, Whitworth, Lancs, OL12 8DP.
(On A 671 through Whitworth)

Kent AGS ShowSaturday, 22 March 2014 - 12.00 noon to 4.00 pm at Rainham School for Girls, Highfield Road, Rainham, Gillingham, Kent  ME8 0BX.
(M2 Jn 4; A278 to Gillingham; 2miles then right onto A2; 1 mile then after footbridge right onto Salisbury Avenue; then right onto Derwent Way)

I do hope that as many of you as possible will attend these events - and take your friends - it's a great day out. You can make it even more fun by entering some plants in the show!

East Lancs Show Committee have not done their snow dance this year and are hoping for a fine spring day.  Do come along if you can, if it's anything like Kendal last week we should have a great display.

Quite a good day at Kent today! Good turn out, some marvellous plants and a good taste of horticultural bonhomie. As time allows I aim to write a personal appreciation on the AGS website, and give some detail about everything going on. Suffice it to say - the Society was done proud!

A nice hot soothing bath, a hearty meal, two G&T's that didn't touch the sides and a quick look at the football scores and now time to report on another wonderful East Lancashire AGS Show held here at 'sunny' Whitworth today.
We welcomed sixty four exhibitors from near and far (from Whitworth to Bacup, from North Wales to Ireland, from Northumberland to the West Midlands, from the Lake District to Lincolnshire) and visitors in abundance.  The hall was packed with beautifully grown gems and three new exhibitors attracted red stickers and trophies in equal measure.  A full report with images will appear when the aforementioned G&T's wear off, but for now let it suffice to say that Frank and Barbara Hoyle took the ultimate award for the second week running with their indomitable Cyclamen (displayed this time in a wondrous six-pan), which was voted 'Best in Show', but couldn't be awarded a second Farrer Medal.  The weather was slightly exaggerated above, while the sun did shine for a minute or two we were treated to heavy rain, hail, sleet and snow for the majority of the day.  Did this dampen our East Lanc's spirit ... not in the slightest!!!  Hearty congratulations and many thanks to Carol Kellett and her magnificent team on another terrific East Lancashire AGS Show.

I' m afraid I failed to make a note of the name of the winner Maggi...  :-\  I'm sure somebody will be able to fill in ???   :-[

I guess the Farrer medal was'nt awarded because it was entered in the wrong category.
There was a judges note stating the pot was too big for the category and therefore it didn't get a first in the categeroy, yet it was judged to be the best plant in show.  Maybe somebody more knowledgable than me on regulations and rules can make a comment on this.  Still a tremendously well grown plant though !

The Townsendia was Eric Jarrett's. There was considerable debate amongst the judges as to whether it should even be considered for an award as it was actually NASd because it was realised after it's class had been judged that it was in a nominal 19cm pot which was actually 20cm outside diameter, ie oversize for the class in which it was entered. We realised this before judging was complete so although it was initially placed first in it's class, the results were reviewed and the plant previously placed second was uprated to first. It was decided that notwithstanding this it should still be considered for best in show, which it received, and Farrer Medal, which it did not. When being presented with his award card Eric was also presented with a ruler! Needless to say he was mortified at his mistake but took it in good part but had to put up with quite a bit of ribbing. Rumour has it that he was going home to put the pot on a lathe prior to the Exeter show next week.

When I see my Townsendia today has but three flowers this was a fantastic plant for the species, thank you for posting the pictures, rules are rules but I have to note they are not always strictly applied when they should be or what is the point of having the rule, my personal opinion is that rules should be strictly applied as if this is not done all the time, folk being folk, always try to push the limits.

My friends, and I consider "all" plants people friends,  this thing on the
townsendia pot has riled my American feathers.  This is splitting hairs,
which is about all a mm is. Such exactness is only appropriate in
industry and science.

OK, off my soapbox.  I have several things blooming but for some reason

I have no opinion on the show ruling but the pot was out by a centimeter, not a millimeter.  Mysteries of the metric system...  ;)

The Townsendia is fabulous and so are the rest of the plants shown.  The first show I ever saw was when visiting Graham and Iris Nicholls.  They took us to his local meeting and show.  I thought it wonderful, although Graham said it was just a "small local show".  The judge was so lovely, went around with me after the judging and answered all my questions.  The next show I saw was in Nottingham!!!  It was unreal.
You are so lucky that so many of you live where you are able to see these plants in person, it's not really possible on this side of the pond.

John, this may all sound petty and ridiculous, but a) there is a class available for the larger (whether that be 'slightly' larger or more pronounced) exhibits; b) an extra centimetre or two on the size of a pot doesn't sound much, but actually provides space for a whole lot more plant thereby giving that exhibitor an unfair advantage; c) rules are 'usually' there for a reason and you automatically sign up for these by taking your plants to the show; d) these pot sizes are very necessary for the show secretaries who have to allocate VERY LIMITED bench space on the evening before the show and just a few centimetres here and there can make an ENORMOUS difference.
… But I do agree … it does SOUND petty and ridiculous to those who are not involved!!!    ;D

The Townsendia was a super plant - here's another picture of it, and also one of Trillium nivale (which Eric also showed). You hardly need to say anything more about them! Last year the trillium was laid flat by the frost the day before the show, but stiil looked very good on the day. Eric is just one of the finest growers of alpines there is, and since he has always exhibited and judged plants I expect he takes this in good spirit - he does have quite a few Farrer medals and red cards under his belt! Perhaps we should once in a while hold a show with no judging and just see if more people might come along and be involved? Once you know you can grow a plant well, I'm not sure it is so necessary to be continually recognised for this? We all see it anyway. And of course Cliff is right - how can you have a Show without rules? But it is also possible to stage non-competitive displays that are more educational, and have the miniature gardens and small flower arrangements which bring in a different way of looking at showing off plants and how you like to grow them; the first picture for example - a flower arrangement from Lee and Julie Martin.

My brain tells me not to comment on this but my heart says if you feel strongly enough about something then you have to even though it will backfire on you without doubt. I have been an exhibitor for 25 years and a show secretary for 15 of those. I have seen some strange decisions in that time but this has to be one of the worst. For a plant to be considered for best in show it has to have won its class unless it is in a three pan entry, that is black and white and there is no argument, it cannot be best in show if it has already been beaten. This plant was placed third, the reasons are irrelevant. Whilst the pot was only marginally oversize it was oversize and as such was NAS full stop. I know Eric very well and he's integrity is not in doubt, it was a simple mistake. What is in doubt however is the decision of the director of shows or his representative on the day not to exclude the plant altogether. A person who has not been mentioned here is the owner of the plant that was runner up to best in show and there would have been one, I bet that person is well chuffed. If you ask the many people who do not show anymore and those who have left the society there are some common words used, Arrogant, aloof, out of touch, on this occasion guilty as charged I think. This is not bending the rules this is ignoring them.

I can think of at least one occasion at an SRGC Show when a Forrest medal was awarded to a plant that  had been beaten in a one-pan class. I fear that  these things will happen from time to time, regrettable though that may be.

After a couple of weeks off at Loughborough (too busy sorting out the artistic competition) and at Kendal (too far to travel), I was the AGS Show Photographer at the Kent Show, and have now posted the results on the AGS website here -

http://www.alpinegardensociety.net/discussion/atshows/AGS+KENT+SHOW+nd+MARCH+/18470/ (http://www.alpinegardensociety.net/discussion/atshows/AGS+KENT+SHOW+nd+MARCH+/18470/)

I'm not really qualified to comment on the judging issue, which people clearly find contentious.  However, I would observe that the plant in question was marked NAS (not according to schedule), and not given a place in its class.  As such, one can argue that it was not beaten in its class, but excluded from the competitive class because it did not satisfy the requirements of the class.  A Farrer medal can be awarded to a plant which is not in a competitive class (e.g. in a display).  It seems to me that the status of entries which have been deemed NAS is something that needs to be clarified, and it will no doubt come up in a show committee meeting in the near future.

Been following the discussions re rules etc, rules are rules so either you apply them or why have them, a very apt comment is how does the exhibitor who was second feel when they know the winner was in an oversize pot...happened to me more than once, always felt peeved.
Enough, I took a fair few pictures on Saturday, usual mish mash of likes, could get a decent picture as no one around, took my eye as I wandered around camera in hand. I just started somewhere and walked up and down the benches so in no absolute order
Iris bucharica 'Baldschuan Yellow' 52, Ivor Betteridge
Corydalis solida 'Penza Strain' 62 Ian Leslie....was not the biggest in the class but very compact and good colour
Callianthemum farreri 65 Diane Clement....not sticker but was of interest, just a tad on the small side
Saxifraga oppositifolia Norway Form from Mala Janes (67
Viola jooii 81 Alan Furness

Peter Hood had quite a few Primula bracteata straight and hybrids on the benches one was
Primula bracteata in class 53
Fritillaria carica 73 from Clare Oates up against the winner of the class
Fritillaria aurea x pinardii from Don Peace
Narcissus minor 'Douglasbank' won the Narcissus salver for yours truly, was lucky that on the day other mightier plants were elsewhere
Don Peace also won the small six pan and so an AGS medal. from front to back, left side first there was
Fritllaria carica, Primula 'Broadwell Milkmaid', Dionysia bryoides
Corydalis solida 'Penza Strain,  Dionysia gaube, Primula miniera

The classes for New in Cultivation (88) or Rare in Cultivation (89) always stimulates my interest so
Iris narynensis ssp archibaldii (88) from Jim Almond caught my eye + his notes
Iris zaprjagajewii (89) from Jim also + notes

also in class 89, the winner in fact was
Androsace baltistanica from Brian Burrow + notes.
Much admired, is a plant I have always struggled with and never got as good as this one was
Astragalus coccineus (78) from Peter Farkasch
Of a totally different nature and spectacle was the less flamboyant
Hutchinsea alpina ssp brevicaulis (29) Ron and Hilary Price, not the best of pictures but you get the idea
Tim Lever produced what was for me the first Daphne of the season with
Daphne 'Collington Crown'

Tommy Anderson continued in his rich vein of form this year with
Corydalis glaucescens (16)
Callianthemum anemonoides (17) won the Jim Lever Memorial Trophy again for yours truly, quite appropriate as the plant originally came from them some years ago
Fritillaria gibbosa (21) from Ivor Betteridge, managed a decent picture of it for once
Viola brevistipulate hidakana (26) Barry Winter
Trillium rivale 'Winifred Murray Group' again from me....as far as I can work out this is still the original plant that I got years ago from Kath Dryen, have lots of its seedlings on the go, all shades and colours

Androsace have in the main been few and far between this year but
Androsace laevigata (27) Chris Lilley was a nice plant as was
Androsace sempervivoides 'Susan Joan' (10) Georgina Instone and
Androsace lehmanniana (10) Geoff Rollinson
Dionysia microphylla (13) from Derek Pickard
A most unusual looking plant from Tim Lever was
Junellia coralloides, no sticker but just caught my eye as being 'different'

As you will be aware there was 'only' a Best in Show' rather than a Farrer Medal plant as Frank and Barbara Hoyle did it again this week with the same Cyclamen, probably looking better this week than last
Cyclamen pseudibericum (1) as part of their class 1 entry six pan. I was interest to see that further down the classes Ian Kidman also won with a C. pseudibericum which had smaller leaves compared to the Hoyle plant and the flowers therefore appeared to have longer stems, is this because of cultural variation, a different 'clone' or does this happen as the plant gets older. The Hoyles also had a very nice
Primula 'Mrs Dyas' (2)
Primula allionii 'Crusader' from Geoff Rollinson was also, I believe, a contender for the Farrer
There were many Primula 'Broadwell Milkmaid' on the bench, a nice example was from Tony Stanley in 99

I am sure you are right Maggi but talking to exhibitors I get the impression that quite a few have struggled with them this winter but am sure there will be plenty around just the same.
Last three pictures
Primula 'Netta Dennis' from Don Peace in (5)...he had the most points in the Open Section by the way, the plant ws up against
Primula irregularis hybrid from Ian Kidman in the same class...he was not a happy chappy that it was second, grumbled about it all the way home in the car!
Primula vulgaris ssp sibthorpii (6) from John Richards was an attractive plant, should be more often seen
My very last picture is of a very large pan of a seed raised Erythronium in class 22 (red sticker job) but sadly I missed out the name label and the exhibitor (I think was Della Kerr), it has lots more flowers to come by the quantity of bud so I expect we will see it at Hexham (along with many Scottish visitors I hope)
