Title: Dunblane 2008
Post by: ChrisB on January 05, 2008, 11:45:45 AM
Does anyone know the date for this event yet?  I'm planning to go by train and want to order travel tickets early before they go up in price.

Hi, Chris, yes, the Dunblane Early Bulb day is on 16th February 2008. More details later, but it'll be a goody, it always is!

Thanks Maggi, I'm sure its hard to sort out speakers, but we had such a good time last year we want to come again, but a lot of driving for Sue, so we thought we'd see how much it costs on the train.  Now we can plan..... see you there!!!!!!

Huge apologies, Folks, for delay in posting news of the Speakers at the Dunblane Early Bulb Day.
 They are as follows:
11am Susan Band  Spring Bulbs
         Ian Young    Narcissus

2pm    Ian Christie   Trillium
          Sandy Leven   Larger Bulbs.

Any plants looking good are welcome to the Non-competitive display. Lots of plants for sale, as ever.

If you feel inclined to volunteer to serve tea and wash dishes, for say half an hour, so much the better!

Yes indeed Carlo.  I'm sure I'm going to be drooling.... cant wait!
We have our train tickets now.  Hope it will be finished by 3.15pm as our train departs at half past, but I'm sure there will be others on the same train too.

At least the railway station is handy - just across the road. :)

Yes, yes it is, thank goodness.  So all we have to do is practice our sprinting and make sure we have a seat near the door.....

It does look a great line-up of speakers. I shall be sorry to miss the event and the opportunity to meet some of you again.  Perhaps, I'm only a little sorry though, as that day I shall be heading for Lisbon and the Serra da Estrella at the start of a narcissus hunt that will lead south to the Serra da Arrabida and then across to Ronda - looking forward to seeing may be up to 20 species and natural hybrids. Can't wait after the horrid weather here. Hope it's going to be great and that the plants are doing their stuff in time.  ;D :D ;D :D

Best wishes to all who are going to Dunblane and hope that you have a great day

Naw, thought I'd leave it behind for once?   ;)

I'm still learning to drive my new monster (Nkion D80). Must write myself a big reminder this time: "check the ****** settings". Last time many shots were not as good as they should have been 'cos I'd fiddled with some of the settings whilst practicing and hadn't thought to check them again. !!!!!!!!!!! Big lesson learnt. Something to be said for using auto, I suppose.............

And I'd just like to say a great big thank you to all you good people who made the day the great success it was.  All the speakers were terrific, and I learned lots of practical, useful information.  Three cheers!!!!

It was a  super day, wasn't it, Chris? Great to see you and Sue there, amongst the happy throng! Can't believe how busy it was. Ian suddenly said on the way home, crikey, nerver even took my camera out of my rucksack, never mind use it! Oops!  Just as well you were on the case!
By the way, only spoke briefly to Anthony ( though Ian met his Mum) but he (Anthony) was not waering any kind of headgear, rainbow or otherwise. (see previous posts, other threads1!!)

I agree, the talks were fantastic. What was Sandy on because I want some? ;D Too hot for headgear of anykind Maggi. Galanthus poceli was interesting. It was collected by the wife of Vojtĕch Holubec and exhibited by Maragaret and Henry Taylor. They are trying to find out where it was found.

Re Galanthus poceli... what WAS different about it? It had a longish pedicel.. but others do to... leaves, markings etc. seemed pretty averagely snowdroppy to me..... did I miss something?  Margaret seemd unsure, too!

Maggi......to you all snowdrops look the same. On the other hand it could be Margaret and Henry's retirement plan? Remember what Sandy said: "put a different label on a plant and I'll buy it".

I have one or two more pics if you need them for anything, Maggi.  Did destroy a few though  :(.  I've come home thoroughly charged up for the season, oh, and also a little poorer in the pocket.... but heyho, its only money.  Got a sweatshirt too, which I shall proudly wear to every gardening group I go to (and there are many  ;D).  And of course, the obligatory mug.  It kept my tea warm in the cool conservatory this morning, so they do work.

to lots of us they all look the same.

Poceli is Croation for started. Maybe they dug it up in Croatia and thought this is the start of lots of money

Galanthus poceli doesnt look different at all. This is what we are up against with the naming of snowdrops. Those who dont get to see what is available stick names to anything 'unusual'.
Maybe at the big Scottish event next year i'll bring one flower of everything from the garden. Cant tell you much more just now oither than I've been asked if I will attand and give a lecture

Hi all ,

you must understand : Maggi is only interested for real golden snowdrops = earrings !
.....not the common white ......

Did anyone see a man on TV recently showing his multcoloured roses where every petal is a different colour?
Title: Re: Dunblane 2008

Maggi ,

I had a much better idea :

Ian should cross Galanthus with Cosmos atropurpurea - so you get snowdrops with a nice fragrance after chocolate ( maybe Toblerone ) and nice brown markings .....thats would be fine !
and it was easy for us to find new names  8)

maybe : Mousse au Chocolate ......

Hope someone found the multi-coloured rose man and put him painlessly out of his misery. :P

Hans, excellent idea... I believe it could also make money! I will ask Ian to start on this plan at once.... he will have to save lots of pollen until the cosmos flowers.... 8)

Did nobody notice that Gal. Brenda Troyle has a very good scent ?
But on the other side, who is crawling in the garden finding a scented snowdrop when it is bitter cold.
( I picked one and it was a very pleasant for almost one week on my desk.)

Luit most if not all snowdrops are scented. Some are better than others

Wonderful bulbs, as usual!

Perfectly hideous roses - the perpetrators ought to be *$%&$##& >:( >:(

And congratulations to sporting Dunblane today :)

Maggi I can send Ian some pollen right now, of the choc cosmos. Then it's all go. Of course I would want some of the first babies.  :D Then I should be able to send crocus pollen when your cosmos flowers. Do the cross both ways. ;D

I saw 'Little Ben' - two flowers in a pot - for £4 at Dunblane and bought a potful of Augustus for £3. :) I noticed Ian Christie buy the only Greenfield for £2! :(

Anthony, I didn't buy Augustus as i was afraid of the virus  :P

Little Ben sells for £15+ at snowdrop events. Wish I was there!

Even the dealers were only charging £8.50 for two 2 flowering 'Little Ben' bulbs in a pot. I also bought a pair of 'Mrs Backhouse's Spectacles', 'Bitton', and several others.

Maggi, are all 'Augustus' virused and if not, how does it manifest itself?

Anthony,

What great prices. But then, I suppose being all Scottish up there they realised that nobody would pay any more for a snowdrop - and this is a compliment to your good judgement and intelligence!

Great bargains.

The virus shows as yellowish stripes on the leaves later in the season, and a general lack of vigour. Ron Mackenzie of The Snowdrop Company has a virus-free stock which is sometimes listed in his catalogue. I bought a bulb about 3 years ago which I chipped and I now have a small clump flowering which does have healthy leaves. Most commercial stocks are reputedly virused.

I've already discovered several things which must have decided the gravel was better looking than they were!

Sue, was it you I promised some seed of Myosotis capitata? My usually foolproof method of writing a note to myself has gone belly up because I cleaned out my book/computer/sparebedroom and now I can't find all those little bits of paper. Anyway, the Myosotis seed is ready to go, along with Polyxena (Anthony) and various Narcissus (various people) so those will get away in the next few days but I'd like to be sure I'm sending the Myosotis to the right person.

Well, I hope not, Mark, :o this is the SRGC! As I recall it took Anthony a few days to realise he'd left it behind......easy enough to get muddled in the opposite direction.
