http://www.horticulturejobs.co.uk/job/311986/plant-propagator/
Advice please , it would be along way for me to move ! And I'm not sure I'm cut out to make the tea room look tidy and I'm not sure that should be the Head Propagators job any way !
-
Would also mean a massive pay cut for me
-
Cambo have a wide range of activities on the estate , including the use of "volunteers" see here : http://www.camboestate.com/volunteers/ (http://www.camboestate.com/volunteers/)
Speaking personally I cannot see how I would be happy to have total strangers coming in randomly and having to be supervised . Would not be my idea of fun.
(I agree that Head Propagator and Tea room Cleaner does not seem ideal combo for employment description!)
-
That's a lot responsibility/skills for not much money, sadly often the case ::)
why the ad says from £8.20 hour is a little puzzling, having run a small nursery here when I first took on the job I would be wanting considerably more particularly when care of plants outside of working hours, and the restrictions that places on you, is rarely taken into account.

Yep very little money for the amount of work they seem to be expecting . Hey ho
-
Emma, with the disadvantages already mentioned, as well as the pay cut, why are you even thinking about it? I think (from a long way off, of course,) that you already have a very nice niche carved out for yourself and your future, especially with the recent success of your new snowdrop event. So many people must now be thinking of you as a major player in the snowdrop world and surely there will be greater opportunities to come your way if you want a change from your present position. I think I'd be staying put for now at least.
-
It's a shame (if not crminal) that horticulture as a career is paid so poorly, that job advert being a great example where they want experience & wide range of skills & all that for a few pounds over minimum wage, all too common.
There was a hilarious ad on there last year with pages & pages of job description requiring intimate knowledge of everything from plant prop, site security, maintenance to IT and yet you could walk into a supermarket and earn as much putting things on shelves, not to demean shelf stackers ;) but it often looks like some horticulture jobs seem to be a crafty way of employing one poorly paid person the to do the work of many.
-
I'm looking just because I keep being told by my land agent to look , it makes me feel like she's not telling the truth about people buying the site and keeping us on , also they are painting the inside of my house magnolia .....the least inspiring colour known to man or woman .
-
Don't bother Emma, you've got loads to offer and for a lot more money than Cambo are offering. Stay put for the moment, something good will turn up I can feel it in my bones.
-
Not that we wouldn't love to have you in Scotland, Emma and Cambo is a lovely place - but you can do much better than this.
-
With how I'm feeling today if this was offered I'd just take it ....my house isn't a home anymore ,not for me . Just going to box everything up and just leave out what I use . Just easier that way
-
Decorating around you while you still live there?
Disgraceful way to treat someone >:( hope you find something soon.
-
Every room magnolia , no choice in the matter
-
I feel like I'm going mad
-
Dear Emma, I promise you, there can be a happy home after magnolia ......
-
I hope these photos show that vast areas of magnolia paint can be used to good advantage!! ;) ;D
-
Not a speck of dust in sight Maggi!
I must get Mr Sheen & my feather duster out tonight ;D
-
Dear Emma, I promise you, there can be a happy home after magnolia ......
I've seen art galleries less well-stocked!
-
If that's the impression given, Mike, that there is no dust , then that is something else to recommend magnolia paint - a dust disguiser ::)
Well Alan, some folk collect snowdrops, other have more diverse obsessions!
-
They took all my picture hooks down and filled up the holes , not sure they will be happy if I go and put them back + loads more :(
-
Some folk collect snowdrops, others collect everything else, eh Maggi?
-
Some folk collect snowdrops, others collect everything else, eh Maggi?
Yup! ;D - or maybe some just collect everything. It's known as hoarding - I'm told that medical advice can be sought for it......... but, of course, first you have to admit you've got a problem - and neither of us if prepared to 'fess up on that score! :-X
-
Decorating whilst you still live there seems a rotten thing to do Emma.
Are the new owners going to do the gardens themselves?
-
They took all my picture hooks down and filled up the holes
That's standard practice when redecorating; you have to remove obstacles such as picture hooks or the job takes much longer and you fill the holes because it looks better and because you tend to enlarge the hole when you remove the hook. It's still much quicker than trying to paint around the hooks.
-
Not a speck of dust in sight Maggi! I must get Mr Sheen & my feather duster out tonight ;D
On the weekend we had the neighbors over for dinner and decided later that evening we must do that more often. That is so the house gets cleaned periodically. The parsnips planted in the main hall last year did not do so well.

I do believe that parsnips need a lot of light........
We had Cliff and Sue for a brief stay last week- so if the place IS cleaner than usual that's the reason - mind you, I've spent most o f the time since they left looking for the junk I tidied away which now turns out to be full of useful stuff! Cannot find the vaccination certs and adoption papers of the two newest Westies - I always say nothing good ever comes from cleaning up!
-

Doesn't go on the market till April , they are saying it might take three years to sell . Maybe I just woke up depressed this morning .
-
Emma
How is the garden now?
-
The soil is still water logged , the meadows are under water still and won't be able to sort out the damaged trees till the water goes away
-
Maybe the buyers will be looking to open a marina.... :o :P
-
It's not going to sell looking like it does at the moment :(
-
Not a speck of dust in sight Maggi!
I didn't see one either Mike, and I was there for a week! :)
Magnolia walls are only to be tolerated IF they are to be covered up, by the great artifacts and pictures seen in Maggi's pictures and same here, though perhaps not on such a scale. Agents push painting in Magnolia because it totally eliminates or obliterates any sign of character or interest of the previous occupiers. I love magnolias but hate magnolia paint.
-
I intended to do a quick flit around with the duster last night Lesley but by the time I got home from work it was dark & the dust didn't seem to bad.......honest ::) ;D
-
If you found a snowdrop that colour (Magnolia),you would dancing like a nutter ;D ;D ;D.
Hows that for inspiring?.......There's always upside to everthing. It just takes more time to find it sometimes.. ;)........
-
I used to live in what had been a tea house with just black painted boards as the ceiling, rather rough. It was covered with not too visible cobwebs and since I couldn't reach them, I looked upon them as insulation and so they were OK. ;D
Mr Grumpy, if you FIND a magnolia paint-coloured snowdrop, let me know. I'll be thrilled about it too but I think the wait may be a long one.
-
Anyone know if snowdrops grow on St Michael's Mount in Cornwall ? They are looking for a head gardener
-
Can't see why 'drops wouldn't grow there ....... wouldn't take you too long to get 'em started!
-
Didn't know if the salt from the sea would harm them or not. Not moving all that way and then lose them all !
-
ah! I see, I'm being unusually dim today - of course, there will be a lot of sea spray - too stupid today to think of that. I could take them here for you, of course ::) ;D
-
Anyone know if snowdrops grow on St Michael's Mount in Cornwall ? They are looking for a head gardener
Wonderful place to work if you have a head for heights!
-
Mmmm I don't have a head for heights !
-
That's probably the first question they ask on the job interview!
-
I don't think salt spray is a problem for them in these parts. Road salt splatter is a different matter for most plants here.

Devon is bit like living close to the end of the known World and Cornwall is the end of the known World so if you fancy becoming a hermitess Emma give it a go ;D
-
Mmm I know I'm an introvert , but not sure I am ready for the hermatige . I bet it would be a bugger getting to my dog shows , not even sure if they let dogs on the island
-
Job going in Norfolk at Pensthorpe . Again it's a bit of a journey getting any where I imagine.
-
Well there are several Norfolk Galanthophiles ;D and if you like birds Pensthorpe is a good place to be. The prairie planting is great in the later part of the year! Communications is the thing, it's a long way from here to the West, North and South but easier to get to the Midlands and London.
-
Got an interview at Thenford house next Monday , not Head Gardeners job but at the moment as long as I can take my dogs with me I'm not going to be fussy ....I want out of here which makes me sad as I loved living and working here .
-
Thenford? Ooh, nice arboretum, I'm told.
-
Not just a nice arboretum, lots of snowdrops and hellebores etc etc fingers crossed Emma ;)
-
This is good news Emma, I hope the interview goes well.
-
Me too , just want out of here now
-
Good luck with the interview Emma.
-
I bet you do Emma.
Redundancy & job change is always traumatic but when it also involves your home, well I can only imagine......... :'(
-
Emma
Good luck for next Monday.
-
Lord Heseltine's residence no less.....................
If I met him would I have to call him 'Lord'? ???
I really wouldn't want to.
-
He seems a nice man , he sat next to my mum for lunch when the gala went there .
-
Lord Heseltine's residence no less.....................

Sir would probably do, I could get quite used to it :P
-
Sir would probably do, I could get quite used to it :P
I daresay you could David but if you think I'm going to call you "Sir," think again. Think yourself darned lucky to get "Hey, You!"
-
I heard he spent a fortune on snowdrops that day Emma.
You never know what this job could lead to.
Hope you get it!
-
Emma
Brush up on Cyclamen - he is a member :)
-
I did not think Lord Hesaltine's snowdrops were particularly well-situated. Most were in open beds on flat ground so it was not obvious that the soil was sufficiently well-drained nor that they got enough summer shade for the varieties that prefer woodland. On the other hand, there were many steep banks where snowdrops had not been planted. Offer to take better care of his snowdrops and hopefully he will snatch you up, Emma.
-
I'm hopping the snowdrop angle will go down well :) have also applied for a job in Surrey near Reigate . But I'm hoping I get the Thenford job , still don't know what the pay would be for it .
-
I like Cyclamen too
-
I daresay you could David but if you think I'm going to call you "Sir," think again. Think yourself darned lucky to get "Hey, You!"
;D ;D ;D
-
Got an interview at Thenford house next Monday
Best of luck for tomorrow, Emma.
-
Be yourself Emma and impress 'em.
-
Thank you everyone !
-
Good interview , not quite sure the job was for me ???
-
I guess one question to ask yourself is would the job enhance your CV. That is, if you took the job then applied for another job a few years down the road, would the experience you will gain from the job you are considering now give you access to more or better jobs in future.
-
Mmmm I am now in unfamiliar territory . I find myself in a position with two job offers on the table ! Now I have to choose ! Ahhhhhhhh
-
That's good news and aptly demonstrates how wrong the people you originally applied to were to not offer you their job.
-
Well done Emma, go with your heart ;)
-
Two discerning employers, clearly. I'm with Brian - go with your heart, Emma!
-
I'm pleased to hear your good news Emma.
-
I'm not sure my heart knows any more than my brain !
-
Then do a list of pros and cons for each one in two columns so you can compare them....sometimes helps!
-
I'm not sure my heart knows any more than my brain !
Try flipping a coin. Sometimes that can tell you.
-
I've made up my mind , just have to confirm with them and let land agent know ....then I will announce to the world where I'm off too !
-
I am going to be the new glasshouse horticulralist at Thenford house and they are going to let me help with the snowdrops !
-
I am going to be the new glasshouse horticulralist at Thenford house and they are going to let me help with the snowdrops !
Brilliant. Well done.
-
Congratulation, Emma; that's very exciting. When do you start the new job?
-
I am going to be the new glasshouse horticulralist at Thenford house and they are going to let me help with the snowdrops !
Congratulations, Emma! That sounds an interesting post and Ian and I wish you every success and happiness there.
-
Congratulation Emma, well done.
-
Got to sort out the finer details with the land agent regarding start date
-
I am going to be the new glasshouse horticulturalist at Thenford house and they are going to let me help with the snowdrops !
Double joy, and a beautiful surrounding garden too. Well done Emma, we are so pleased all is turning out well for you.
-
Congratulation Emma, seems to be a great job with lot of opportunities ;D
-
We'll done Emma, I hope you will be very happy there.
-
I couldn't be more pleased.
Maybe you will be able to visit the snowdrop woods with the Norfolk forumists :)
-
Art it's Thenford not Thetford ie Lord Hesletine's estate in Northamptonshire! It's our loss!
-
It is closer than Dorset ;D
Even though I may travel the world, my UK geography is not good.
-
Ah I shall have to visit if there is that much demand for me too lol
-
Good news Emma, what an interesting job.
There are more opportunities for you in this new job.
I love my job but I often wish I had become a horticulturalist when I was younger.
-
One of the nicest things will be that you are close to Richard and Valerie at Woodchippings and Evenley Wood too ;)
-
Congratulations Emma, I'm sure that you will find it a fascinating job. I think we will need a forum outing to visit you once you are settled! :)
-
I think we might need to be security-vetted first. I vaguely recall talk of checks being made when the Galanthus Gala visited.

You mean because of Michael Heseltine's political prominence (notably as a former secretary of state for defence in the Thatcher government)?
Well I wouldn't get in then. This little book I wrote at the end of the 1980s when the deployments of the cruise missile convoys from Greenham Common were still supposed to be secret tends to raise flags with the UK and US security agencies (as I had confirmed by someone in the civil service with connections at GCHQ during the security mania that followed 9.11 and the attack on the twin towers in New York) - Cruisewatch: Civil resistance against American nuclear Cruise missile convoys in the English countryside, 1984-1990 [Paperback]

Cor! I've always wanted to be 'blacklisted' ;D
-
well done! I don't remember any glass houses from the snowdrop day that was held there
-
There's 7 of them in the walled garden !
-
so there are

Indeed
-
I don't remember any glass houses from the snowdrop day that was held there
As I recall, some areas were not open on the day and I think the glasshouses were in one of those.
The gardens were open to the public in October 2013 http://www.artfund.org/what-to-see/events/2013/10/04/sculpture-garden-and-arboretum-thenford-house-nr-banbury (http://www.artfund.org/what-to-see/events/2013/10/04/sculpture-garden-and-arboretum-thenford-house-nr-banbury)
-
That lot should keep you busy, Emma!
-
I hope so !
-
Cor! I've always wanted to be 'blacklisted' ;D
I can certainly help you out with that David.
-
Emma,
I had congratulated you earlier, but just now looked at the Google maps and photos of your new Thenford digs. I am proud to know someone who has the expertise and bandwidth to take on horticultural responsibility under all of that glass. You must be thrilled, and I am very curious as to what goes on in all of those houses. I know it will be in good hands. Very best wishes.
-

;D ;D ;D

Here's a small flavour of what was in them from our visit in April 2008
-
and some more, beautifully maintained plants and a wonderful variety to give pleasure to Lord and Lady H.
-
Is that Geranium maderense in the second set of pictures? I love that plant and have sometimes wondered if you could cross-breed it with a regular cranesbill to create a hardy version. There's a project for you, Emma.
-
With such an extensive range of glasshouses, what could you NOT grow to give pleasure in a stroll through the glasshouses and have great plants to spend time in the "big house"? A very exciting and quite challenging prospect. Go Emma!
-
Is that Geranium maderense in the second set of pictures?
Yes, it looked stunning!
-
It will be a challenge . Been to visit Wisley today , went to see the cyclamen show , and the carnivorous plants and the took lots of pictures of the plant combos in the glasshouse . It's going to be fun
-
I hope cleaning all the glass is someone else's job. Do they have it done by contractors?
-
Emma is now frantically checking the small print in her new job specs ;D
-
I hope cleaning all the glass is someone else's job. Do they have it done by contractors?
You can CLEAN glass???!!!! Whoodda thunk it?!!
-
He did.

Brian...thank you, what a wonderful range of plant materials. Emma...getting more envious to see all of this. You are going to be in your element.
-
And David, still laughing at the 'When I'm cleaning windows" skit with George Formby on u-tube you posted.
-
Cleaning glass will be a welcome change from picking up Labrador poop .......even though the bosses Labradors left the site in October , my neighbours still think it's fine for their friends 4 labs to visit the garden and s..t everywhere ! When I asked the neighbour to clean it up ....he ended throwing it in the flower beds were we work ! Never asked again , was easier for me to clear it up !
-
And David, still laughing at the 'When I'm cleaning windows" skit with George Formby on u-tube you posted.
;D ;)

For those who may wish to visit Thenford, Open days are ticket only and anyone can attend as long as they book in advance, via the secretary, Thenford House, Thenford, Nr. Banbury, Oxon, OX17 2 BX. Says anyone can attend so maybe Martin will be forgiven and let in :D

Would love to come and check out the gardens. Are you close to a relocation date? It will probably be some time before I can figure in a trip, but you never know.
-
I hope to have moved in by this date next month :) then a few days to settle in and start the following week :)
-
A very exciting - and busy - time for you Emma!
-
Emma,
Glad it is all coming together for you. You will be in your new digs before you know it. :)
-
I hope so , feeling a bit melancholy today . Doing the last river fly survey with the wildlife trust ......it's just I don't know if the new people will take care of all the wildlife and bugs and stuff that I've fought to protect and nurture . It's out of my hands and that makes me a bit sad today .
-
I'm going to miss the river and all it's life
-
Well there is a goodly sized lake and river there too isn't there?
-
I'm moving on Sunday , got to dig up the last of my bulbs tomorrow !
-
I'm moving on Sunday , got to dig up the last of my bulbs tomorrow !
Good luck, Emma, hope you don't leave any behind. Lots of work to move your plants as well as yourself and the Frenchies, but I think your new home is going to be great. I feel it in my bones -at least I hope it's that and not just the cold snap ! ::)
-
I think your new home is going to be great. I feel it in my bones -at least I hope it's that and not just the cold snap ! ::)
Probably a bit of both, Maggi.
-
Moving Day !
-
I'm sure we all wish you the very best with your move Emma, here's to a wonderful new job and many happy years ahead. I hope the Frenchies enjoy their new surroundings too...as well as the bulbs of course ;D Next week will pass with extreme speed and then you will be back in the swing of things :-*
-
Hear! Hear!
-
Things are all going well ;D just got my wifi up and running today .
-
That's good news, Emma - you might have been in a broadband black hole - rural location and all that. :-\
If the weather forecast is correct the summer will be terrific, so you should have long sunny days to get things organised to your liking and fill those glass houses with fabulousness!
