Title: Emma and her new job
Post by: emma T on March 01, 2014, 10:54:18 AM
http://www.horticulturejobs.co.uk/job/311986/plant-propagator/

Advice please , it would be along way for me to move ! And I'm not sure I'm cut out to make the tea room look tidy and I'm not sure that should be the Head Propagators job any way !

Would also mean a massive pay cut for me

Cambo have a wide range of activities  on the estate , including the use of "volunteers"  see here : http://www.camboestate.com/volunteers/ (http://www.camboestate.com/volunteers/)

Speaking personally I cannot see how I would be happy to have total strangers coming in randomly and having to be supervised . Would not be my idea of fun.
(I agree that Head Propagator and Tea room Cleaner does not seem ideal combo for employment description!)

That's a lot responsibility/skills for not much money, sadly often the case  ::)

why the ad says from £8.20 hour is a little puzzling, having run a small nursery here when I first took on the job I would be wanting considerably more particularly when care of plants outside of working hours, and the restrictions that places on you, is rarely taken into account.

Yep very little money for the amount of work they seem to be expecting . Hey ho

Emma, with the disadvantages already mentioned, as well as the pay cut, why are you even thinking about it? I think (from a long way off, of course,) that you already have a very nice niche carved out for yourself and your future, especially with the recent success of your new snowdrop event. So many people must now be thinking of you as a major player in the snowdrop world and surely there will be greater opportunities to come your way if you want a change from your present position. I think I'd be staying put for now at least.

It's a shame (if not crminal) that horticulture as a career is paid so poorly, that job advert being a great example where they want experience & wide range of skills & all that for a few pounds over minimum wage, all too common.

There was a hilarious ad on there last year with pages & pages of job description requiring intimate knowledge of everything from plant prop, site security, maintenance to IT and yet you could walk into a supermarket and earn as much putting things on shelves, not to demean shelf stackers  ;) but it often looks like some horticulture jobs seem to be a crafty way of employing one poorly paid person the to do the work of many.

I'm looking just because I keep being told by my land agent to look , it makes me feel like she's not telling the truth about people buying the site and keeping us on , also they are painting the inside of my house magnolia .....the least inspiring colour known to man or woman .

Don't bother Emma, you've got loads to offer and for a lot more money than Cambo are offering. Stay put for the moment, something good will turn up I can feel it in my bones.

If that's the impression given, Mike, that there is no dust , then that is something else to recommend magnolia paint - a dust disguiser  ::)

Well Alan, some folk collect snowdrops, other have more diverse obsessions!

Yup!  ;D      - or maybe some just collect everything.   It's known as hoarding - I'm told that medical advice can be sought for it......... but, of course, first you have to admit you've got a problem - and neither of us if prepared to  'fess up on that score! :-X

Decorating whilst you still live there seems a rotten thing to do Emma.

Are the new owners going to do the gardens themselves?

They took all my picture hooks down and filled up the holes

That's standard practice when redecorating; you have to remove obstacles such as picture hooks or the job takes much longer and you fill the holes because it looks better and because you tend to enlarge the hole when you remove the hook.  It's still much quicker than trying to paint around the hooks.

On the weekend we had the neighbors over for dinner and decided later that evening we must do that more often.  That is so the house gets cleaned periodically.  The parsnips planted in the main hall last year did not do so well.

I do believe that parsnips need a lot of light........
We had Cliff and Sue for a brief stay  last week- so if the place IS cleaner than usual that's the reason -  mind you, I've spent most o f the time since they left looking for the junk I tidied away which now turns out to be full of useful stuff!   Cannot find the vaccination certs and adoption papers of the two newest Westies - I always say  nothing good ever comes from cleaning up!

I didn't see one either Mike, and I was there for a week! :)

Magnolia walls are only to be tolerated IF they are to be covered up, by the great artifacts and pictures seen in Maggi's pictures and same here, though perhaps not on such a scale. Agents push painting in Magnolia because it totally eliminates or obliterates any sign of character or interest of the previous occupiers. I love magnolias but hate magnolia paint.

I used to live in what had been a tea house with just black painted boards as the ceiling, rather rough. It was covered with not too visible cobwebs and since I couldn't reach them, I looked upon them as insulation and so they were OK. ;D

Mr Grumpy, if you FIND a magnolia paint-coloured snowdrop, let me know. I'll be thrilled about it too but I think the wait may be a long one.

I don't think salt spray is a problem for them in these parts.   Road salt splatter is a different matter for most plants here.

I did not think Lord Hesaltine's snowdrops were particularly well-situated.  Most were in open beds on flat ground so it was not obvious that the soil was sufficiently well-drained nor that they got enough summer shade for the varieties that prefer woodland.  On the other hand, there were many steep banks where snowdrops had not been planted.  Offer to take better care of his snowdrops and hopefully he will snatch you up, Emma.

I think we might need to be security-vetted first.  I vaguely recall talk of checks being made when the Galanthus Gala visited.

You mean because of Michael Heseltine's political prominence (notably as a former secretary of state for defence in the Thatcher government)?

Well I wouldn't get in then. This little book I wrote at the end of the 1980s when the deployments of the cruise missile convoys from Greenham Common were still supposed to be secret tends to raise flags with the UK and US security agencies (as I had confirmed by someone in the civil service with connections at GCHQ during the security mania that followed 9.11 and the attack on the twin towers in New York) - Cruisewatch: Civil resistance against American nuclear Cruise missile convoys in the English countryside, 1984-1990 [Paperback]

I don't remember any glass houses from the snowdrop day that was held there

As I recall, some areas were not open on the day and I think the glasshouses were in one of those.

The gardens were open to the public in October 2013 http://www.artfund.org/what-to-see/events/2013/10/04/sculpture-garden-and-arboretum-thenford-house-nr-banbury (http://www.artfund.org/what-to-see/events/2013/10/04/sculpture-garden-and-arboretum-thenford-house-nr-banbury)

Emma,
I had congratulated you earlier, but just now looked at the Google maps and photos of your new Thenford digs. I am proud to know someone who has the expertise and bandwidth to take on horticultural responsibility under all of that glass. You must be thrilled, and I am very curious as to what goes on in all of those houses. I know it will be in good hands. Very best wishes.

Is that Geranium maderense in the second set of pictures?  I love that plant and have sometimes wondered if you could cross-breed it with a regular cranesbill to create a hardy version.  There's a project for you, Emma.

With such an extensive range of glasshouses, what could you NOT grow to give pleasure in a stroll through the glasshouses and have great plants to spend time in the "big house"?  A very exciting and quite challenging prospect. Go Emma!

Cleaning glass will be a welcome change from picking up Labrador poop .......even though the bosses Labradors left the site in October , my neighbours still think it's fine for their friends 4 labs to visit the garden and s..t everywhere ! When I asked the neighbour to clean it up ....he ended throwing it in the flower beds were we work ! Never asked again , was easier for me to clear it up !

For those who may wish to visit Thenford,  Open days are ticket only and anyone can attend as long as they book in advance, via the secretary, Thenford House, Thenford, Nr. Banbury, Oxon, OX17 2 BX.  Says anyone can attend so maybe Martin will be forgiven and let in :D

Would love to come and check out the gardens. Are you close to a relocation date? It will probably be some time before I can figure in a trip, but you never know.

I hope so , feeling a bit melancholy today . Doing the last river fly survey with the wildlife trust ......it's just I don't know if the new people will take care of all the wildlife and bugs and stuff that I've fought to protect and nurture . It's out of my hands and that makes me a bit sad today .

Good luck, Emma, hope you don't leave any behind. Lots of work to move your plants as well as yourself and the Frenchies, but I think your new home is going to be great.  I feel it in my bones  -at least I hope it's  that and not just the cold snap ! ::)

That's good news, Emma - you might have been in a broadband black hole - rural location and all that.  :-\

If the weather forecast is correct the summer will be terrific, so you should have long sunny days to get things organised to your liking and fill those glass houses with fabulousness!
