Just back from a splendid day at Ragley Hall with blue skies! Very entertaining & informative  talks by Julian Sutton (Desirable Plants), Tom Mitchell (Evolution Plants) and Ross Barbour (Ragley Hall). The weather allowed a stroll around the newly laid Winter Garden. Scent from the Daphne odora and Sarcococca confusa was dreamy....

Spent far too much of course on the excellent selection of snowdrops on offer, including a replacement Bagpuize Virginia and a Wispy. I will need to hide them from the wife or she will be wanting another pair of boots!

-
Just some quick photos to add to Paul's post.

-
A good weekend and the garden looked very nice indeed.  Only downside was that the organisers didn't think to put new batteries in the mikes as at the back of the room we all found it difficult to hear particularly with a bad echo as well.  Having said that the talks were excellent and not being able to hear the AGM was no loss!

Took lots of photos and will post some later but three to start.

 1. and 2.  In the Plant Sale
 3.            Brian Ellis obviously seeing something he likes and Jo Hynes on far right.

-
Did you venture out side to see the crevice garden (http://www.ragley.co.uk/country-estate-warwickshire/gardens/explore/)?

-
Yes we did Maggie.  Although funnily enough I didn't take any pics of it as not much colour.  Hopefully will put up some more tomorrow when I have processed them.

-
Just two, a close up of a section and a bit of colour!

-
A few more from Ragley Hall.

 1.      Emma in the thick of it.
 2 - 5. The gardens
-
				And just a few more.

 1, 3, 4 and 5.  Around the garden
 2.                   Galanthus Penelope Anne
-
				Some more from Ragley.

-
And the last few.  The last picture is Sue Bedwell (left) and Jo Hynes (right).

-
...and the person in 7049w is Ross the gardener at Ragley, who did a superb job ;D

-
Lol Emma in the thick of it is a great pun on my surname , well done that man

-
Ross has done a great job with the winter garden.
Does anyone know who supplied the snowdrops to Ragley as I thought they all looked particularly large flowered & lusty.

And talking about lust.............apparently Ross caused one or two lady galanthophiles hearts to flutter   ;)

I understand Olive Mason had something to do with it.
-
The snowdrops looked superb didn't they Brian.

Did you see the small group of 'Anglesey Abbey' in the winter garden?

I've never seen this variety have such large flowers & look so perfectly poculiform..............they looked more like 'Moreton Mill'.

Someone soon put the ladies right regarding Ross & Helen, Diane........... :'(  ;D
-
Yes indeed Mike we combed the winter garden, the yellows were looking good to.

Did you mean this group by any chance :)
-
				Yes that's the group Brian.

 What do you think?
-
Well we have had Anglesey Abbey look that good sometimes, it's just a bit variable year to year, this year it's sort of three quarters there!  Last year it was super, like this group, another year there can be hardly any longer inner tepals.  I got an 'Anglesey Abbey Neat and Tidy Form' last year and thought it would be the most poculiform, but it is a rather nice little green tipped snowdrop, not like this at all, you live and learn (hopefully)!!

-
...and here it is this afternoon, a bit past it's best this year!

-
Apologies for being rather late to this thread...

I thought Ragley was excellent (I'm somewhat biased as it's nearby) and I was very impressed by the winter garden.

It was good to meet more of you there and at Shaftesbury (which was also a very enjoyable day).

I did say hello to you Brian, but it was at the sales table and a bit hectic!

Yes Anthony, I realised after we had spoken that you must be another forumist, but then, as you say it was all a bit hectic!  It's always good to meet fellow forumists at these events and I regret we didn't have more time to speak.  Hopefully I shall see some forumists on Saturday at the CGS Members day!
-
I didn't manage to bump into you again, or I'd have spoken to you properly- rather than just saying 'Hello, are you Brian' whilst we were both trying to look at lots of snowdrops! Hopefully next time.

Hope the CGS day goes well for all who're attending.
-
I think most enthusiasts would understand the quick 'Hello Brian or Anthony how are you?' as you experience the rush of blood to the head trying to find the snowdrops you have always wanted to grow..................the time to chat & catch up comes later when we have all calmed down with a nice cup of tea & a big slice cake ;D

 :D
Both of which were excellent on the day, although I do like a half walnut on top of the Coffee and Walnut Cake

				 :D
............, although I do like a half walnut on top of the Coffee and Walnut Cake

Oh YES! Just like my Mother used to make........
-
Hiya all, first time on the Forum.

Thanks for the kind comments on the Winter Garden.
Olive did kindly give me some drops but most of them I have bought from Avon Bulbs over the years. They are always what they say and always top quality.
-
Your winter garden was superb Ross

-
Hi Ross - welcome to the Forum :)

-
Hi Ross the winter garden was stunning. Welcome to the forum.

-
Apologies for the misinformation Ross, welcome to the forum, I look forward to you posting pictures of the crevice garden in due course, we thought you had some really good ideas for adding horticultural interest to the estate, well done ;)

-
What a lovely warm welcome and more kind comments, much appreciated thank you.
I think the Winter Garden is my favourite part of Ragley with the Crevice coming a close second. I used to hate January and February but now I’m out there crawling around on my hands and knees expectantly  :)
