Title: Computer problems and/or advice 2014
Post by: Hans J on January 19, 2014, 11:35:13 AM
Hi all ,

I have since some days Problems with the member map ...I can see nothing ( see Picture )
After asking our Maggi she told me that the Website of SRGC is fully OK ...so it must be a Problem on my PC
Has maybe anybody the same Problem ?
Any advices are  very welcome !
Maggi told me I should look in german pages (with search machines ) but I can not find any good advices ...
I have made updates from Java and Adobe ...but this helps not...
The strange thing is that I can look the Google map from single members ...

A other Problem in this time that I can often not see older pictures :
Maggi told me on her PC the pictures are visible ...

Could this be maybe a problem after a update from Norton Antivirus ?

Thank you in advance
Hans

Get rid of Norton and download AVG,a much better system. I had trouble with Norton years ago,
since I downloaded AVG never a problem.  There is also a free version of AVG.

Hans,

AVG is a free antivirus program.  See http://free.avg.com/us-en/homepage (http://free.avg.com/us-en/homepage)

I use Norton Antivirus on my computer at home, and I also have a problem but with some pictures only.  Some of the member's pictures show as a red cross, (like the screenshot in your message), but some are OK, and all the plant pictures are OK.  However, my Member Map page is blank, with no map.  This started one or two weeks ago.

My computer in my office shows exactly the same problem, but we do NOT use Norton Antivirus in the office, so maybe this is not a Norton problem, but an Internet Explorer problem?

Thank you Richard ,

OK- I have found AVG .

Sometimes I have the same idea that this is a problem of the Internet Explorer ( I have IE 11)
But there are so many possibilities to adjust ...it is impossibly for me ..

I've just checked 2 computers, one with IE11 and the other with IE10. No map on either and I don't run Norton, the mystery deepens :P

I just opened IE  - don't know what version it is-  got a member map up - almost!  But whole thing is so slow and missing so many features that I know to be there that I only ever use it for this sort of check.

So many other browsers available that are efficient and so easy to use that there are  simple alternatives for anyone having these difficulties.  Many people I know  have several loaded and use different ones  as their needs dictate. And  no, these folks are not all twenty-something whizz kids!

It's our pleasure  as the web team to provide the service - it's up to readers to access it.........

In all fairness, Norton has got a lot better and AVG a lot worse in the last few years.  AVG has got a lot more bloated whilst Norton has slimmed-down from its bloated state of a few years ago.

Personally I would use Kaspersky as paid-for security software or Microsoft Security Essentials if you want a free one.

Here a funny Story :
In last year December after upload my new update of Norton Antivirus I could not longer use my Photoshop ....after a lot of search I found a isolated file - after restore this file ( I got a lot of warnings from Norton how danger this file is ) ...now works my photoshop again ..without any Problems
The strange thing was that my "Image Ready " program works in this time...

A true word is :
We can solve with a computer a problem ...but without a computer we had this problem not !

Alan,
That's good to know that I'm using what the experts recommend. I too entrust my computer security to the company founded by a graduate of a Russian institute co-sponsored by the Russian Ministry of Defence and the KGB.  ;) ::)
At least that's what Wikipedia tells me!  ;D

Hans, have you, by any chance, recently changed your version of IE. If so perhaps it would be worth trying switching off any virus protection you have and then trying to see if the Bulb Log opens?

David ,

I dont know since which time I had a update from IE 10 to IE 11 ...
The update from Norton Antivirus was in end of December last year

I suppose that Norton has nothing to do with this Problem ...because with Firefox is not a Problem

Maybe the NSA is reading Ian's Bulb log too ?

The bulb logs are pdf files.  If you have Adobe reader installed and the Adobe PDF Reader add-on for Internet Explorer enabled then there should not be a problem.  As there is a problem I would try (re-)installing the latesst version of Adobe Reader from here http://www.adobe.com/uk/products/reader.html (http://www.adobe.com/uk/products/reader.html) (I presume this is the UK English version).

I have just upload the UK Version - many thanks

But the strange thing is :

Have Windows 8.1 newly installed. Can see the member map in Firefox, but not in Chrome or IE 11.
Bulblog is fine in all three. Antivirus is McAfee.

Exactly the same behaviour with my old Windows 7 machine. There the antivirus is AVG. Member map also OK in Safari.

So it seems to be a browser issue with Chrome and IE 11. (This post is trying to help to identify the issue, not to criticise.)

I would really like to congratulate the team that puts together the SRGC website. It is a large complex site with many many hours of interesting reading. The forum is clearly a great success. You have created a fantastic resource for the alpine / rock gardening community. As someone who looks after some websites, I am filled with admiration with what you have achieved.

You can upload photos from just about any device, I think, Christine - the issue is whether or not you have the capacity ( programme) on that device to reduce the file size to suit the forum restrictions.

I guess that's what I'm really asking Maggie.  I can't find any info about how to reduce the size of the photo to a thumb nail for uploading.  I have iPhoto that I downloaded.  But maybe there's something better anyone got a recommend for me?

Chris - if you have iPhoto (presumably on a Mac), you don't need anything else. Put your pic in iPhoto - either add to Library or simply click & drag it. Select the pic, then go to 'Share' on top menu, then 'Export'. Set the size at 600 (maximum dimension). That's it - simple. Upload to the forum as an attachment. If you want to first crop or sharpen (not too much!) the photo, you can do that in 'Preview'.

Hi Gerry
The options I get under share are
Mail, Facebook, Flickr, Twitter, message, AirDrop, iTunes or beam
There are other categories of create a project apps and print but they don't seem to apply for what I want to do.  I can't find export anywhere but I'm still learning how to use my ipad.  I have looked through the manual but it doesn't seem to cover what I want to do either.  May have to go to the apple forum I guess.. Thanks for your help

I suspect that "Mail"  will be a good bet, Christine  - we often used to advise people to email pictures to themselves  in order to see what the reduced photo would look like .
So long as you are only saving a second file and not overwriting the original.

Christine, you need to download an app to resize pictures -I have just tried a free app called simple resize from the App Store  it does the job and is very easy to use.

Chris - I have no experience of iPads but I assume the iPhoto application works in the same way whatever the hardware. I use it for all the photos I post (& email) - it is so easy.

Chris - I've just looked up iPhoto in 'Help' on my Mac. This is what it tells me:

"To learn more about iPhoto, see the iPhoto website at www.apple.com/ilife/iphoto/ (http://www.apple.com/ilife/iphoto/). Or, if you have iPhoto on your computer, open it and choose Help > iPhoto Help."

Title: Re: Computer problems and/or advice 2014

I'm afraid iPads will perform some tasks like a fully-fledged computer but baulk at others that seem as if they should be relatively simple.  The answer to most problems is to find an 'app' that achieves what you want, if such a one exists.  So I'm sure Ian is pointing you in the right direction.  The existence of such an app strongly implies that the facility is not built-in to your iPad so the only alternative would to be to transfer the photo to a computer and resize it there.

Quite right Alan.  I have now downloaded an app that works beautifully and is free with adverts so I've been able to upload the snowdrop bulb picture to the forum.  Still getting to grips with what my new little machine can and cannot do.  Learned already that it only likes pictures taken using it doesn't like importing them much at all.  Had to download iTunes to do that and link to my PC. But on the whole I love this new toy....
