Title: Neem Oil & Spraying Oil
Post by: richardmbunn on January 03, 2014, 04:03:53 PM
I haven't got a clue where to get spraying oil but I was thinking about using Neem oil for my Pleiones next year.  Is this the right kind that I need?

Thanks

Hi Richard,

I'm in a similar situation to you. I have recently acquired a number of Pleiones from different sources and would like to have the facility to treat them prophylactically. Most of the pleiones are from "quality growers" and have already been treated but I have a few of less certain provenance that I would like to treat.

I had thought of trying this stuff: http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/261188718906? (http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/261188718906?) and mixing it with their own branded horticultural soap as they advise.  However before I try such a concoction I would like some endorsement/pointers from those in the know!  :)

I use Neem oil every year in concentration of 5 ml/1L. It works very well for me  ;)

Hi Guys,
If you type ''neem'' into the search box at the top right of this screen (when your on the Pleione & Orchidacae page) it'll bring up a huge amount of info. Personally I use 4cc/l neem with 1cc/l washing up liquid and warm water.

Good advice, Tim - though if  you use the search button,  fourth from the left at the top left of this page,  you'll probably get an even more informative list of results.  That search button is more successful in most forum searches  (- I don't know why! )

Spraying oil is made by CERTIS. If you contact them I'm sure they will provide details of a local supplier. However it only comes in 5ltrs and is therefore expensive if you only have a few plants to treat. Its mainly sold to nurseries and farmers as it can be diluted 1:100 OIL/WATER or even 1:200 ( I dip pleione at 1:50), so 5ltrs should last you a lifetime. As well as using it as a dip on dormant bulbs I also spray at least twice a year during growth. Gets rid of pests such as scale insects on Acers and mealy on indoor plants easily.

If using the search field at top right it's also important to do so from the highest level (Scottish Rock Garden Forum) to ensure that the search is as wide as possible, since it searches only 'downstream' from wherever you are in the forum.

Thanks for the great information folks. Quick question, does the neem oil have to be diluted with a carrier oil or can water be used? I'm trying to keep the cost down considering I've only a handful of bulbs.

Richard:

The Neem I've seen is already an oil.  It can be diluted with water.

I think a teaspoon of neem oil  with a quarter teaspoon of detergent  ( which I believe helps the mix) to a quart of  warm water ( 1litre)  is the basic.....
