Title: Galanthus in October 2013
Post by: Hagen Engelmann on October 01, 2013, 06:27:55 PM
It was only a short September for the galanthophile.
The Oktober begins with the first ringing flowers.
It is  G r-o. Fine. But where are the leaves??
No problem.
We will have a good and long autumn season.

We have two flowers of Galanthus regina-olgae out in the green house - waiting for a good day to open them properly for a photo.
I hope you are correct about the good long Autumn, Hagen.  ;)

Every day a few new flowers to warm the heart.
We need it here.
Our night temperatures sunk down under zero.

In February 2012 I bought 2 Galanthus reginae-olgae 'Ruby Baker' which I wasnt happy with. They were tiny, possibly twinscales, with only one leaf. I repotted them today, October 5th 2012, and what a surprise I had. I was expecting nothing in the pot but I had two good sized bulbs and two tiny off sets. I should have photographed them. They have started to root so I dont want to knock them out again,

Bit of a coincidence with the date but a year on and I noticed today have two flower buds on my reginae-olgae 'Ruby Baker'. Green tipped by its not that obvious just now.

Two of them

Galanthus peshmenii

Galanthus reginae olgae 'Eleni' named by Melvyn

Hello Tony, both groups started without leaves?

Hello Mark, it is not unusual what you describe.
Often the autumn galanthus  are not stable with their green outer marks.

the r-o all started with no leaves but the peshmenii are a mixture, some with and some without.

Thanks!

I had a lovely clump outside, in the ground, in Dunblane that took down to -10oC regularly. I'm now trying to grow snowdrops where the ground temperature never reaches below zero.

I think I remember RichardW at Bennington Lordship saying some of his reginae-olgae suffered badly in our recent winters, but that could be down to a combination of low temperature and heavy soil.  Hopefully he will drop by and give us the details.

I have never had problems with hardiness in the garden, lowest I have been is -9c two years ago but never get flowers as they are eaten off by slugs as soon as they start to emerge.

Not even hardy bulbs will survive -20oC in a pot.

I have tried to grow reginae-olgae in pots.  Unlike the ones grown in the ground, mine never flower.  But these are large outdoor pots, not those kept in a greenhouse or bulb frame.  And the temperatures here rarely fall much below zero and almost never much below -8°C.

Locally, the Cambridge Botanic Garden exhibits pot-grown reginae-olgae in their glasshouse each year (although they lost the "Cambridge" cultivar).

green lines, tips, blotches on the outer segments of autumn snowdrops are real often a problem.

Here is a Gp without any green marks. Also the apical mark is in absence.

FINCHALE was no magic. I exchanged the species. It is not a nivalis, it is a peshmenii.
But it has the elegant figure of FINCHALE ABBEY, hasn`t it?!

These white flowers are a happy group this year.

I quite agree nearly every year Tilebarn Jamie is attacked and this year was no exception- see below not a shoot untouched. I did wonder could it be mice ? but last night slug treatment caught a blighter. Strange though not a yard away another group - the second picture( a gift from Tony Willis ;) is untouched. Needless to say I have been treating the RO's with slug clear a liquid jobbie which gets the little ones ::)

Photo 1, a general view of the greenhouse.
Photo 2 Galanthus reginae-olgae Lefki This selection can be quite variable in size, when mature and happy the plants are very robust and always have two scapes per bulb, the height of the tallest plant in the photo is 24cm.

. 'Ruby Baker': As Hagen told Mark, it can be a lot af things that make it greener or not but I always say the same and most people have to laugh about it. What I say ? Talk to them, cherish them and you will see it works  ;)
. 'Blanc de Chine': Does have 4 outers ; probably because it's a young plant which was planted out last year ?

. Melvyn, beautiful plants and especially 'Autumn Snow'. Is 'Fotini' already blooming ?

Autumn-flowering snowdrops are not offered for sale very widely and I am curious to know how a few of us here have managed to accumulate so many.  I believe Melvyn has collected seed from snowdrops growing in their native habitats but how have you done it, Hagen?  How did you find so many unusual and attractive autumn-flowering snowdrops?  They surely don't grow wild or naturalised anywhere near where you live?  Have you grown all yours from seed also?

Imagine a National Collection of early-flowering snowdrops that you could visit in October to December.  That would be something really special.

Alan, you know, I`m a galanthophile for long, long years.
If you want to create news,
you should do not swim always in the same sauce,
you should not use only trodden pathes.
You need a lot of friends, not only in UK.
Then you can get much more seed, you cannot buy in the next shop.
And you need time, time, time.
To wait!!!
I`m not the youngest!!!

Thank you Hagen and Melvyn for your replies - and your generous offer of seed, Melvyn.  Unfortunately I'm not well-equipped for raising any plants from seed so I will decline.  Also, I'm only seeking snowdrops that are hardy enough to ultimately grow outside in my garden.  That seems to rule-out some of the autumn-flowering snowdrops and also requires that the others must be carefully situated.  I don't have that many spots in the garden that seem to provide the right conditions for reginae-olgae.  My perception is that they require a warm location that is inhospitable to slugs and snails.

I have mine in clay pots in the green house plunge, in troughs, a raised bed and on the rockery. I put out a few pellets to stop the slugs and snails eating the flowers

Oh dear, Emma.  Being made redundant is not a pleasant experience; I hope you are able to find a new job quickly but sometimes you just have to be patient.

It's not the best time to be lifting snowdrops but they will grow tolerably well in pots in my experience.  Some thrive, some sulk but they will keep going.  I used quite large plastic pots myself but your family has recently converted me to the even larger "long tom" type for larger snowdrops.

Hello everybody,

Good to see that the snowdrops are starting to grow again. Some nice flowers have been posted already.
The season is starting overhere also.....
All are growing outside in the garden, and it seems they like the warmer weather we still have.

Hagen, it is the first year for me I have Sheds and Outhouses. Hopefully it will be that early next year also.
Barnes just has it nose above the ground. Fly Fishing, Elwesii ex Watson Leeds and Santa Claus are showing themselves
too. Last year Elw. Howard Wheeler was flowering the second week of November, no sign of it yet, this year.

In addition to numerous reginae-olgae and peshmenii in pots, I have ' Peter Gatehouse' in flower.  Surely this is early.

Although I would not normally suggest leaving twinscaling as late as the label indicates, or leave potting up until today as you can see they have come to no harm. It just calls for great care in handling so that the roots are not damaged.

Interesting to see Melvyn, including the top of the bulb which has sprouted nicely too.
'Fotini' is such a beauty.

My little experiment, 7 more views in 2 hours since my post.   We love you for more than your greens though.

A very Happy Birthday to Ruby Baker.

Have already done so Maggi, Ruby has asked me to thank all those that have sent their good wishes and told me that her day has been really enjoyable.
