VRV Autumn Lecture November 23, 2013
Our friends in the Flemish Rock \Garden Club ( Vlaamse Rotsplanten Vereniging (http://www.vrvforum.be/?p=2557) ) will soon be coming in from their gardens to enjoy their autumn meeting in Ghent.
This will take place on November 23, 2013 , at the usual address :
Botanic Garden of the University of Ghent, Charles Louis Ledeganckstraat 35 in Auditorium 4 , at 10am .
This year they are celebrating the world of bulbs with three talks from Melvyn Jope. 8)
We are fortunate to benefit here in the forum from Melvyn's advice and experience.
Melvyn is perhaps best known for his work with the Cyclamen Society but he is also very experienced with Galanthus and Crocus.
His first talk will concentrate on his travels in Northern Greece, Epirus, Macedonia and Thrace - such floral rich areas, with so many great crocus.
His second subject will be Galanthus regina-olgae- Melvyn knows these both in nature and cultivation.
Melvyn's third talk will be on Cyclamen - what a super programme for this great event !

Probably good advice about the beer, Melvyn - but no need to worry about the chocolate - it is uniformly delicious but not overstrong!

Our good wishes bear repeating here, Kris for the tenth anniversary of the VRV
10 years of the Flemish Rock Garden Club !
The SRGC sends hearty congratulations to all our good friends in the Vlaamse Rotsplanten Vereniging
(VRV ) - the Flemish Rock Plant Society- which today celebrates the tenth anniversary since it was founded.
On Saturday, November 22, 2003 , Jozef Lemmens, Rita Wolf, Rudy de Kort, Wim Van den Broeck and Frans Van Eynde took the initiative for the establishment of the Flemish Rock Plant Society.
Jef Lemmens the founding President has given thanks to everyone who has contributed to the success of the club :
"....thanks to .........Anyone who has ever become a member sponsors, advertisers, authors of articles, speakers at the members day, and so on ...... In short, everyone who believes in that there was a need for a rock plant association in Flanders".
The SRGC is proud to be closely associated with this vibrant association of rock gardeners from Flanders - we share many members and rejoice in the success of the VRV Forum, which they now share with the Dutch Club (NRV).
We wish the VRV great success in the future and hope for a long history of continued friendship between our members.
Again - Congratulations to the VRV! We know you will enjoy the start of your celebrations at your meeting tomorrow with Melvyn Jope as your guest speaker.... wish we could be with you!

This is so true Maggi .....I give my impression and opinion on our Flemish Forum .
It is difficult to translate or expres al in English but sure we like it so much.
Most of al this was not only a lecture build on plants and latin names .....It was much more then that .Melvyn has a true and warm story with a soul and it brings back the Greek culture .
And ofcourse I like the way Melvyn select and grow plants .
I can recommand Melvyn as speaker to anyone..

News from our Friends in the Flemish Rock Garden Club about their next Lecture Day…..
http://www.vrvforum.be/?p=2652 (http://www.vrvforum.be/?p=2652)
"On January 25, The VRV again welcomes two top “home grown” speakers.
The first speaker is very famous in the world of snowdrops . Valentin Wijnen has been a passionate galanthophile since the 90s. In his garden he hosts a unique collection of snowdrops, the largest and most diverse in Belgium . More than 650 named and some 150 unnamed selections are part of his collection.
In addition to the 16 or so new snowdrops that he has named himself, he has also selected in the past 10 years, along with Johan Mens, some unique varieties of our native snowdrop Galanthus nivalis var scharlockii . He will bring the story of the latest Belgian snowdrops to us. He will take us on a journey through the named and unnamed cultivars that have arisen in Belgium .
The second speaker is known to most, it is Herman Mylemans, our Gentian Specialist . Anyone who has ever searched for information about gentians will certainly already arrived at his informative website: http://www.gentians.be/ (http://www.gentians.be/) . He will tell us about the gentians of acaulis group and those of the verna group and teach us how to recognize the difference. Between the two groups Gentiana acaulis is both a group name and a generic term hence the confusion , in this lecture Herman will give an insight into this matter. Gentiana verna group and gentian has the same problem for years , a number of features will be discussed .
After these lectures the traditional raffle will be held. . And then we also bring a toast to the new year and we can enjoy a good chat!"

Thanks again for your announcement Maggi ! :-*
I am pretty sure that it gonna be a great day and it is also a pleasure to have those both gentlemen as a speaker.
And note also that that day will be the colors white and blue. And those are the colors of the Scottish flag! ;D

....but perhaps a little expensive to arrange such jewels ;)

Thanks Maggi ... just so long as I can make it to bonny Scotland next month!!! :)

Very inspirational - we always find cakes go down as well or better with visitors to the garden than the plants. We shall have to design some with gentians on the icing!

I firmly subscribe to the opinion that no cake = no celebration !!
Here's an example of some delicious chocolate biscuits decorated with Edelweiss and Gentian that are appropriate for any celebration of an alpine plant club.... We were eating them here to show solidarity with our Flemish Friends...... ;D ;)
