Title: Lewisia rediviva and tweedyi repotting
Post by: Mark Griffiths on September 19, 2013, 07:31:35 PM
I've read in the Brian Matthew book the time to report L. redivia is about now - however it then says growth should appear in February. Mine are in growth now - is that wrong? I thought they usually come up now. When should I repot, summer?

Just checking that it's also as the book implies coming up to the time to do a repot of L.tweedyi after washing the compost off.

Mark, for all my Lewisias I've always tried to follow the advice given by Philip Baulk (the Ashwood Nurseries Lewisia 'guru' ) in an article he did for the then AGS Bulletin in September 1988. He advised re-potting rediviva  by the end of October "when a nice tuft of deep green leaves will be clearly visible......." The plants, of course having been kept completely dry after flowering finished. For tweedyi he advises re-potting in September.

fab, thanks for that. Can you remember if both were to do the take the old compost off thing? I will have the Journal but they're all out of order and not so easy to get at so if you can't remember don't worry.

Yes, Mark. They both should be dry at their respective re-potting times so the old stuff will shake off fairly readily. If you can't find the article let me know and I'll do you a scanned copy of mine.

Good advice although I'm usually reluctant to shake off all the compost. It always appears a little cruel...petty prejudice rather than bitter experience. Now all I have to do is find the time to follow the good advice.

I had the chance to see Lewisia rediviva in habitat in California. It was in full growth in February, growing in huge mounds of serpentine that had the consistence of coarse vermiculite and nothing else. One can dig them out with lttle effort. The whole hills were quite barren with few plants growing in them, giving the impression  of a new volcano.

David, I've realised I don't have it. I had a period when I wasn't a member of the AGS and it looks as if it was 82-90.

if it's easy to do that scan I'd be interested in seeing it. I've enough info to do the repotting today so there would be no rush. many thanks again for the offer.

David, Mark - I  can send the article to Mark. Fuzzy photos in poor light this evening but it will suffice, I hope.

Cheers,

Lewisia rediviva here are just beginning their growth. They're little tufts of leaves are particularly fetching when nearly covered in snow--they seem to love it!
