Title: I'm going on holiday - lily seeds
Post by: robg on August 12, 2013, 11:07:49 PM
I've 4 good heads of L. Kesselringianum with 27 seed pods which are large, fat but still green and showing no signs of bursting.  In 10 days time I go on holiday for 3 weeks.  What do I do (apart from not going on holiday!!) ?

Holiday? What's a holiday?  :-\

Get some muslin or the "feet" of nylon stockings and tie  loosely over the seedpods.
The stems are not likely to collapse while you're away and the covering will hold any escaping seed till you get back.

Horticultural row cover works well, and can be purchased in a big roll, so you will never run out.  Throw it over the entire group of seed pods on a stem, and secure it to the stem below the seed pods with a tie-wrap or string.  This will also keep deer from eating the seed pods (which they think is candy).

Thanks Maggi - doesn't do the plant's looks much good, particularly as the tights were her ladyship's abandoned navy blue ones, but that's the idea I was looking for.  I'm not too sure about the 'loosely' bit - big lily heads to tend to be a bit bigger than ladies' legs

Thanks also to Gene - it's just as well we don't get deer here.  I've seen roe deer in the area here about twice in 40 years.

Actually, I meant to cover each seed pod individually  :o ;)
