Hello New Friends Of SRGC....

Its the perfect day to send my holiday greetings....
as it was not possible to leave the house today.

We are in the throes of our first major winter storm, which is depositing up to 60cm of snow before morning. It's been snowing and blowing all day, and already past my knee-high boots, and -27C. The new accumulation adds to the 2 feet already there. Tomorrow I will have to blaze a new trail through the snowbanks back to the office building located at the rear of the 8 acres...

It's been a lovely opportunity to have a day without work, for a change. So blazing fires were lit in both fireplaces, shortbread and soup was made, and a roast was even cooked for dinner, with music playing to accompany the good feelings. Needless to say, the weather has given me this gift and inspired me to share it with you.

I wish you all similar warm spaces and feelings for the holidays....

Kristl

Kristl, not good to hear you're getting the storms.  Some pretty aweful pics of the ice storms through the centre of the US, then now the heavy snowfalls in the East.  Got you as well eh?

Glad to see there is another lover of Christmas on the Forum Paul! My lot call me Scrooge. Christmas for me starts on Christmas Eve after the shops have closed and ends at bedtime on Boxing Day. Nice to have the family around me though. It wouldn't be so bad if Christmas wasn't pushed down your throat, by the stores and garden centres, from the beginning of October.

Gee, they wait until October in your area.  How positively reserved of them.  One year (and thankfully only one year) we saw Christmas stuff in one store in the last week or August.  I just couldn't believe it.  Of course you do realise that after boxing day it's then marketing for Easter don't you?  :o

I just hate the commercialisation...... but I put up Christmas lights as it is so cool to see people looking out the window of their cars and enjoying them.  Nothing too fancy, but it is another few spots of colour for people to look at.  About 10 houses up from us there is a place that has lots of lights up, and two houses from them has a few up as well, so ours add a bit more further down the road for people to enjoy after the others.  It's the taking them down after Christmas that often doesn't happen until March.  ::)  Or in the case of one set of "rope lights" (i.e the lights are built into a rope, rather than being separate replaceable globes) they never got taken down at all.  They still worked fine this year thankfully.  The good thing with the rope light is that the cockatoos and parrots aren't as likely to destroy them.  If we don't get the lights taken down by mid January we usually end up finding that bits are missing when we take them down, or else they are just totally shredded if they are along the gutter of the house where the cockies can perch and get a good solid go at them!! <sigh>

It's all fun though!!  ;D

I always think of our cruise to see the Midnight Sun in Norway.  It was mid June and ideal weather, one of the day trips had a compulsory visit to a Christmas decorations shop!!

Me wife likes to buy Christmas decorations to hang in the tree from different parts of the world that we visits so it is fun if there exists special Christmas shops. (I like it as well.) I do not like to see them in the normal shops but this Year I have to think many times to realize it is Christmas. I have not been exposed of Christmas songs or other things like that in a perticular high degree.

Lights on houses are great it makes the dark nights less dark.

Exactly. The 24th of Decmeber is Christmas eve (with outbreaks of Christmas occuring about midnight). That's soon enough.

Okay, here's one from a range of Xmas cards I've created and will be publishing for Xmas 2008 - if I can find a distributor! (not as easy as it sounds) or get one of the big chains like Clinton interested (even less easy than it sounds!)

Happy Xmas to one and all from the Baxendale mob.

Love your card Martin. It's appropriate for here as Telecom, my constant bete noire is outsourcing our directory service (where you can get a phone number for anyone not in your local book) to Indonesia. We're all wondering how the Indonesians will cope with our sometime very complicated Maori placenames, especially as even the local 111 (999 to you) service sometimes sends an ambulance to Hawera (western North Island) instead of to Hawea (lower south Island). There's a problem to start with. 111 calls being handled by 2 regional offices instead of many smaller, local offices.

Martin,

Very cool card.

Lesley,

Yeah, I understand the problem.  There's also the problem of then being able to actually understand the operator you get, because despite the english training some of the Indian call centres (Yep, we get them for everything as well) still have people who are virtually intelligible.  I now will refuse to deal with people who have outsourced the call centres to India.  If they can't be bothered supported Australian workers in this industry then I can't be bothered supporting their beusiness.

And Mark, as to Christmas cards..... well the majority of them have been made, just not sent off as yet.  At least this year we're likely to actually get them into the mail before Christmas, as so often we're intending to do it and then it doesn't happen before Christmas so we decide it isn't worthwhile doing it!!  ::)

See, more proof that I'm not a total Bah Humbug.... we put up Christmas lights AND send Christmas cards.  What more could you want????  ;D

REMEMBER THIS AT CHRISTMAS TIME
According to the Alaska Department of Fish and Game, while both male and
female reindeer grow antlers in the summer each year, male reindeer drop their antlers at the beginning of winter, usually late November to mid-December.
Female reindeer retain their antlers till after they give birth in the spring.

Therefore, according to EVERY historical rendition depicting Santa's reindeer, EVERY single one of them, from Rudolph to Blitzen, had to be a girl.

We should've known... ONLY women would be able to drag a fat man in a red velvet suit all around the world in one night and not get lost.

Hawera was bred in the place I live: Noordwijkerhout NL, by a bulbgrower, who called it after the place in NZ
where his wife was born.

I do not believe I've got this wrong, re  the countdown..... today in Aberdeen it is the 19th december, time now 13.45pm... countdown link is showing 5 days, ten hours, sixteen minutes to Christmas... so, 20th = 1 day.. 21st = 2days... 22nd = 3 days, 23rd =4 days ...24 = 5 days  plus odd hours to get from 24th at 13.45 to just past midnight.... and there we are... Christmas.... 8)

And a Happy Christmas and good growing in 2008 to all forumistas!
No lights and no tree so far - all that happens on Christmas Eve (though the tree is standing outside in the garden, all wrapped up, ready and waiting) along with the making of mince pies.
Now that work has calmed down I'm off to make cranberry and cinnamon muffins this evening to bring into work tomorrow, as we're going to a Persian restaurant for our team chrismas lunch, so no tired turkey and stuffing for us (hurrah)
Maggie & Ian - loved the card
Hope to see you all again in the New Year

Well it continues to snow, 5cm this afternoon, 5cm tonight, as well as the bunch we got last Sunday.  Everywhere it's a winter wonderland, although it's not much fun to drive or walk in.  Most street sidewalks haven't been ploughed since before the storm on Sunday and it's rather dangerous walking on the edge of our now very narrow roads.

However, with the snow lightly falling and not much of a wind it looks very much like it will be a truly Canadian Christmas, although we haven't had many of these in the last few years.

Thanks to all the Forumists for all the information and thoughts that you share, the wonderful pictures and the bits and pieces of local culture that comes from your own corner of this globe.  It's amazing how small the world seems to have grown in the last few years especially with the internet.  Where would we be without it?

I would like now to wish you all a very Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year and may you take this special time to enjoy it with your family and friends.

Well it's a bit out down here too, 5 days, not 4. I had a real fright there for a minute. No matter. One could waste a lot of time just counting down along with it.

I'll miss out if I don't do it now so -

A very merry Christmas to all Forumists - posters lookers and lurkers. May you have a wonderful festive season with friends and family and the best possible New Year and year to come. Stay happy and healthy and drive carefully.

I meant to post a picture of the New Zealand Christmas tree, Metrosideros excelsa, the Pohutakawa. I'll try for the local version later in the day or tomorrow.

You probably could Anthony. The northern rata or Metrosideros excelsa would be best I should thing because its natural habit is ancient-looking and very gnarled, with roots well above the ground sometimes. It's a very coastal plant and thrives in the salt winds off the Tasman sea and Pacific Ocean.

Brian I'll do my best later today. Supposed to be in town yesterday but didn't make it. Hopefully I can look at the one by the museum this afternoon. In the meantime, for "decent" photos, google Metrosideros excelsa - NZ Christmas Tree and you'll get some good sites with super pictures. Apparently it grows to 25 metres and is extremely tough as it's roots are frequently deluged by salt water. Have fun.

An alternative to buy one is to use last years.
In Portugal it is not as crazy as it seems since they sell the trees WITH roots!
Having it on a south balcony with sporadic watering in the summer does not make a perfect tree the next year but it was possible to reuse it anyway.  8) The latter half of the year it spent in the garden and was much happier and it was just brought in and dressed in the nice indoor cloths.

Merry Christmas every one and very happy New Year

Kind regards
Joakim

PS as to whom pinched Maggi the answer must be BD ::)

Cliff, could you tell me who published the card (should be on the back). Could well be plagiarism, as my design has been around  since the start of the year and been seen in at least one trade journal.

Cliff, I've sent you a personal message about this Xmas card. In case you don't get the message, could you please give me all the information you can glean from the back of the card - publisher's name and address, copyright date, artist's name, imprint or name of the card range, etc. I'll be seeking legal advice after the holidays and need all the info I can get on the card. It would also help if you could find out where the card was bought (although I'll be looking in the big chains today to see if I can find that out). Thanks. Can you please also not throw the card away just in case I can't find a copy in the shops.

Hi Martin,
No name on the back of the card only the following numbers:-

XCBHS7023    BXCQ105775

The BHS couldn't possibly be British Home Stores could it?

It was certainly purchased in Scotland....that is all I can tell you.

Then it looks like it was probably in a pack or boxed set of cards, with the publisher's info on the outer wrapping or box. I know it's a bit of a cheek to ask, but is there any way you could ask the sender of the card where they bought it and if they still have the wrapping with the publisher's info on  it. Where the card was bought would help a lot, as that'll then allow me to find out who the supplier was.

This is a real pain for me, as it's the best joke in the series of cards I've done to try to get started in the greeting card business as a publisher (I used to do cards for other publishers many years ago). It was in the trade magazine in the summer, so everyone in the business will have seen it. What's amazing is that not only is the joke the same, but the card layout and colouring is the same!

Yes, I hope so too.... typical of modern standards that we should find this type of theft in the "Season of Goodwill", ain't it?  I suppose nowadays all these ratbags are equal opportunity, politically correct, rob anyone, anytime criminals ?  :( >:( :P :-X :-\ :'(

Merry Christmas Eve:

Forwarding this note from Alpine-L

Cards may be sent to:
Harry Dewey, 4605 Brandon Lane, Beltsville, MD 20705-2604

Harry's condition is stable, no longer critical.

And now that it is finally officially winter, I decided that it was time to change my picture to a more accurate rendering of life in north-eastern Canada for the next 5-6 months...

Yes, it does help the atmosphere along, a bit of snow..... mind you, can't say the same for those folks stuck at London Airport until Boxing Day, because of the fog delays......
Here's hoping that Christmas for all of us around the SRGC goes rather better..... hope all is organised and ready to go for a lovely time...

Merry Christmas everybody. Enjoyed a wee sing at Gleneagles Hotel followed by fantastic fireworks at 6.30 p.m. and then saw in Christmas Day at Dunblane Cathedral's watchnight service.

Christmas Day is winding down here now. It's after 8pm and Roger has gone off to see some of his family members and I'm doing dishes, well, will be in a few minutes, accompanied by a beautiful CD from my sister, of Beethoven's late piano sonatas. We went to the midnight service at Knox Church last night so we weren't in any great hurry to get up this morning.

Dinner (at 3pm) was very good (look who cooked it :) and though the morning and early afternoon were deliciously warm, with a very light breeze, clouds started to gather around 1pm. As we sat down outside, to eat, and poured some wine, the first thunder clap came, followed quickly by enormous rain drops so we retired into the house very quickly and ate at the table after all.

It's still raining off and on, which is fine by me. When the disc is finished I'll take a new book and go to bed to get ready to start some serious potting tomorrow.

I've had quite a lazy and relaxed day, and enjoyed every minute of it. I hope all of you in the north, enjoy your Christmas too. My beautiful (15 year old) grand-daughter gave me this delightful gift.

Happy Christmas everyone.

I have been up for 2 hours and am still waiting for the rest of the household to wake.  I think it may be time to turn the telly up louder!...

Best wishes to all

Merry Christmas, one and all from Carol & David in sunny Moray.
Last night was frosty and bright with a full moon. Looked out of the window about 2:30am and the scene was magical - no reason for Santa to get lost this year.
It is now a perfect day for a walk before the indulgances begin.

Today is mild and misty with just a little sun breaking through. Two days ago it was very frosty and I took this little Sax frozen solid.
