Title: Lake Maggiore-Italy
Post by: David Nicholson on June 15, 2013, 02:50:48 PM
We're off on Wednesday to Lake Maggiore for a week. I've read that there is an alpine garden in the hills not far from Stresa and wondered if it is worth seeing? It needs a short journey by cable car to get there and, to say the least, these are not Maureen's favourite type of transport. Advice would be appreciated on this as well as on other horticultural treats we shouldn't miss.

David ,

you have to go to Nursery Eisenhut :

Very interesting garden !!!

Also a interesting trip is to Isola Bella :
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Isola_Bella_(Lago_Maggiore) (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Isola_Bella_(Lago_Maggiore))

Further go to Isole Brissago - on St. Pancrazio:

A other idea is to go to Valle Vercazca or Valle Grande
or drive the road from Cannobio in direction Domodossola  - wonderful !

You should see in this area a lot of nice plants ...not only in botanical gardens

Have fun
Hans

Many thanks Maggi and Hans, some useful information there. Forecast looks a bit mixed Chas. Still, if it rains I'm certain to find a bar and I can sit and people watch and drink espresso and Grappa all day ;D

Since we're on the topic of holidays.  I'll be in London mid August then fly to Milan for a car ride to Bressanone.

I think the London part is pretty well booked.

Any ideas for Sudtyrol?

David, are you staying in Italy or in Switzerland?
Anyway the Swiss area is wonderful for trips. Bellinzona is impressive and interesting with historic fortifications and Locarno too is a nice old town with lots of good shops (for Maureen ::) ::) ;D.
In Verbania, which is about 40 kms. from Locarno is a very nice "Botanical" Garden, Villa Taranto. To keep your trip in the style of the Scottish Rockers this garden is a must, because made by a Scottish captain. I have seen this garden many years ago and will certainly revisit when being in this area.
From Verbania you can also visit Isola Bella.
Further the Valle Verzasca is beautiful and Val Maggia is another option.
Have a nice time and please make some pictures.

Many thanks Luit. We shall be in Stresa. I may not have time to go to the Post Office before I go though :o
