Title: germination Pulsatilla, Gagea
Post by: Catwheazle on June 05, 2013, 07:11:06 PM
Hello,
I had several times Pulsatilla and Gagea tries to bring to germinate. The use of gibberellic acid had no success :-(
I had the seeds of J. Halda, so I assume that they were fine.
Using the search function here in the forum I found nothing unfortunately.
Does anyone have a tip for me?
Greetings
Bernd

Bernd, there is an easy solution. Save your money or order from other collectors.    ;)  (sorry)  :-X

Bernd, Jeff's advise is very good.   :)
But if you'd like to grow Pulsatilla from seed I can tell you how I sow them.
I do it every year because I am into Pulsatilla, collect and sell them.

Our warm period is shorter than in Europe. That's why many species we sow not in open garden but at the window-sill at home. I sow Pulsatilla in March-April. Many years ago I red Pulsatilla  seed needs light and high temperature for germination. That's why I cut arista and put seed onto the compost surface.  Than cover with glass or put a pot into mini-hotbed. Usually they need 2-3 weeks to germinate.

I use this method for most of Pulsatilla species. It is useful for P. vulgaris, hallerii, pratensis, patens, vernalis, flavescens, multifida, turczaninovii, ambigua, ajanensis, albana, violacea...

The alpina group need a cold period for germination. I sow them in autumn and leave in the garden during winter.
Also P. occidentalis germinated only after cold period.

@ Jozef Thanks for the info!
Can someone give me reputable sources for Pulsatilla, Gagea, Tulipa and Paeonia seeds?
@ Olga: Thanks too :-) If you sell them, I am interestet to buy :-)
That the heat is new to me. Here at the winter lasts very long and is very cold first. But I have something for a winter garden :-)
Stratify all I do.
