Title: Exeter - South West AGS Show
Post by: Maggi Young on April 12, 2013, 04:51:36 PM
Northern English and Scots will be heading for Hexham for the Nothumberland SRGC/AGS show tomorrow, but southerners will be able to make their way to Exeter for the South West AGS Show.

I hope all attending have a super day out - preferably with lovely Spring weather!

That was funny- I thought about saying something along those lines about furthest Devon, but thought you'd give me a row for it!  ::) ;D

Flagged out after a busy day at the South West AGS Show managing the members plant stall all day. So busy I don't have a single picture to show you. As related to me the Farrer would have been awarded to Brian and Jo Walker's huge pot of Fritillaria davidii that got the award at Chesterfield last week but, because of this it couldn't be awarded to the same plant this week and the plant was awarded Best in Show instead. If this is all wrong don't me blame me I'm only the messenger.

Cliff Booker was at the Show (after a few days here in the rainy, wet, miserable South West) and I'm sure in time he will be able to add some pictorial colour.

Spent the only break I had talking Primulas, and enjoying every minute of it, with David Philbey (Jon Evans' father-in-law) the doyen of Primula growers.

Renaming this thread for the Exeter South West AGS Show.

Great to hear the day went well David.

Arrived home with a memory card full of images from our wonderful few days in Devon.  Gave a presentation to the very friendly South Devon AGS Group on Wednesday, coastal hiking on Thursday, garden visiting on Friday and the AGS Exeter (South West) Show on Saturday.  So little time to process images before our trip to the Peloponnese, but I will take the liberty of posting some images from the show, but must apologise for a lack of labels or names of exhibitors.

Just a small selection of panels from the Gold Medal winning display of embroidery by the wonderfully prolific Jean Morris.

What a show!  Both at the venue and in your photos, Cliff - thank you for these great photos.
How fortunate for the show to have a venue with such good natural light  - lots of places not blessed with that.   :-X

Isn't Jean Morris' display amazing?  Goodness know how many hours of work go into those embroideries to get such detail.

The final few ...

Caption competition ... our celebrated forum regular, David Nicholson counting money at the show ... (under the bemused and amused gaze of colleague, Mike Quest).  Any printable captions, folks?   ;) ;) :D

Thanks Maggi ... I asked Jean that very question and much depends on the type of stitch ... the 'easier' ones can take anything up to eight days and the more complicated gems can take as long as ten weeks.  Incredible detail and artistry.

David's plan was to boost AGS Funds with a wager on a racing certainty in the 2.30 at Kempton Park, sadly his excitement at getting his hands on the stake money will be short-lived when he realises that Mike has him under surveillance..........

Not only from Yorkshire but from Huddersfield too and I shall be back there for a few days later this week visiting my brother and his wife. I have to admit that I was breaking the habit of a lifetime in Cliff's picture but you have to put on a show when a bloke who lives in Lancashire is taking the picture :P

I thought you were from the 'right' side of the Pennines, David (and I don't just mean geographically - pace Cliff  ;)). Whereabouts in Huddersfield are you from? I'm more mines than mills and, although I've lived in Kirklees for a long time, the Huddersfield accent still sounds a bit odd to my ears. I've been lecturing my kids for years that it's 'nay', not noooo (it's hard to reproduce in writing how they say 'no', but I'm sure you know what I mean!). Thereagain, they point out who wants to sound like an extra in 'Kes'? Still, it's all the West Riding  :).
