hello friends,
its frosty outside,
minus 15 Celsius last night here.
Nevertheless the first Cyp flower opened in the cold frame (in pot)
The hybrid was made and registered by Mr. Frosch in 2001.
But this is a remake with macranthum alba parent.
I think it is so early because of its segawai parent............
(the segawais are near to open their flowers next week)

Cute!
I love alba cyps.
Mine are still just showing through in the pots - nothing is extending during this miserable spring weather.
Even formosanum is only a couple of cm high,
David

hello friends,
no doubt, spring is here :)
how funny is the formosanum this year?
more than 30 shoots, but only one flower....................

That happened to my formosanum last year. It had about 25 shoots and 3 flowers - I'm hoping for better things this year... :)
-
I really like Bernd. Is it a good grower?
Lars
-
sorry Lars, I cannot tell so much,
I just received it last autumn.
it seems to be a little weak, from the segawai parent ????
but it is well worth to try :)
cheers
-
If it's -15oC outside, what is the temperature inside the cold frame?
-
hey,
I keep it frost free over the winter......................
-
Ah, not a cold frame then. ;D Explains why your cyps are so far ahead, but why frost free?
-
hey,
I plant all new aquisitions the first season
and some "delicate" species like the plectrochilum or debile
and other small species in pots in the "cold frame"
for better protection and "controlling"
climate here can be very rough with severe frosts,
but most no snow cover...............
cheers
-
I can see that but pots of most species can cope with -18oC with no protection.
-
Anthony,
I beg to differ with you on your last statement.
It depends totally on the species and hybrids.
It may even be clonal.
I definitely had some winter kill in pots in the severe winter of 2010/11.
I lost a few plants, some were knocked back and lost some roots and growths, some lost just flower buds and some were unaffected.
'Birgit' and 'Gisela' died away completely.
Gabriela lost some growths and roots and produced some small twisted stems.
The various macranthos clones I grow lost their flower buds - they were all brown when the shoots emerged.
Macranthos var hotei lost some roots and spent last year recovering.
Some plants - most of them hybrids, appeared unaffected.
So Goofy's procedure of protecting plants over winter, at least until established, seems to be an excellent idea,
Regards,
David
-
I agree with you David, I have had similar experiences.
My theory is that damage is caused not so much by low temperature but rather by huge swings in temperature. Research tells us that winter temperatures are pretty steady in the places where our cypripediums come from. The fact that many of them grow on the northern side of hills explains that there is no daily heating up from the sun, which can be quite significant, even in winter. That's why I find it beneficial to plunge the pots and keep shading on them all year round.
-
I had no problem with pots - most of them large ceramic, but some plastic, on my patio in Dunblane in the 10 years I grew them, but most were hybrids. No need to shade in Scotland.
-
Some plants - most of them hybrids, appeared unaffected.
So Goofy's procedure of protecting plants over winter, at least until established, seems to be an excellent idea,
tks David for your statement,
thats what I found after about 40 years of growing Cyps successfully :)
I am not a millionaer, so I must be cautious.........
...........and like to enjoy flowers EVERY YEAR, so NO RISK.
cheers
-
Judging from the lovely plants your regime works very well, and, as you say, better to be in control of their environment. Living in a relatively mild damp area I was lucky. Perhaps if I hadn't had to sell my plants before the winter of 2010-11 it might have been a different story?
-
Anthony,
that winter would certainly have been a test!
I'm pretty sure that some of my pots were frozen through.
I now keep my pots in the brick garage which offers much more protection than the wooden shed they were previously kept in.
Maybe the temperature fluctuations are also reduced and this may also help,
Regards,
David
-
I think we all have opinions about winter temperatures. 2010/11 we had minus 18C and my 1500 plants were in net sided polytunnels. They were heavily watered until late November and then left with plastic covers over them until mid March (to stop the wind drying them out) when I started watering again. I only lost some californicum and kentuckiense. Maren is right that rapid changes of temperature causes problems; especially for plants taken from the cold and warmed up.
Tolerance to frost or winter rain for that matter depends on the species or the parents of a particular hybrid.

I've been told I would need to put plants in the chiller part of the fridge for 4 months as Auckland doesn't get cold enough in the winter. We get ground frosts but not enough to kill my proteas, but I'm beginning to think otherwise.

hello friends,
I made this hybrid in 2008, and they flower the first year now.
Mr. Frosch was 'faster' and named it already Schoko.

Hi,
beautiful plants! I do it as well, but try to keep as many out there. Cyp. fargesii example has been through problems with moisture protection -28 ° C.
New plants in the autumn are also frost-free winters with me.
With the pots come I manage somehow not as good :-(
However, we have plenty of snow! For me, the problem is rather that it is always wet and cold products. Unfortunately, this morning was some snow ..... I have to admit, therefore, again :-(
Greetings
Bernd
-
Thanks for the flowers :-) .....
I envy you your weather. Here is snow and rain at 3-4 ° C.

...Here in the mountains there are Cypripedium calceolus...
- Bernd, and not full hour drive from your house you have one of the best side ever:

@Kristof: I know, there is an alba form too.... but i have never seen it :-(
I am also here in the AHO (=Arbeitskreis heimische Orchideen) for many years. ... To protect the orchids :-)
Bernd
-
Same here .... we try to reproduce everything from seeds, and to buy only from reputable sources, but some time it is very difficult to check with suppliers .... so you end up not buying. :-(
There is an alba form of C. calceolus?
By the way, have you tried with asymbiontic reproduction?

hello friends,
I love all kind of discussions in this forum,
but looking at the topic,
you can see this is a thread about "goofys Cyps" ;D
I would recommend a separate thread for that discussion

Hello Goofy,
Your Cypripediums really gigantic. Moreover, in very good condition Culture - what it looks like -. Since I'm naturally curious as you cultivate the. I myself have some problems with pot culture. Possible that are too warm in the winter garden in the root ball?
Please tell us a few times of your tricks;-)

Maggy... :)
hello Bernd.
you know the prominent advertising ?
ITS NOT A TRIC,
ITS A SONY...........................
indeed there is no tric.
ask "monocotman".
he has the same "system"..................
large pots, 14 - 40 cm,
filled with 3+mm Perlite or 50/50 Seramis/Perlite.
in dappled shade in the north, behind a southfacing wall with plain view to the sky.
in winter the smaller pots in the frostfree frame, the larger pots sunken into the soil
and covered with plastic foil, buried under the fallen leaves of neighbouring 20 m high birch trees.
lots of leaves in autumn :(
THATS THE SECRET ;D
cheers
PS its raininng cats and dogs,
so some pics to illustrate next days....................
-
Hi Goofy,
What is you watering regime? and your fertilisation regime?
All your Cypripedium seem so "happy" ....
(PS: and what is the climate in your region?)
Best,
-
hello,
the regime is, that there is no regime ;)
I fertilize every week with liquid fertilizer full strength,
no special brand.
and they look so happy, because they LOVE ME from the bottom of their hearts ;D
cheers

Goofy,
You C. segaway and the hybrid you created with it are wonderful.
Thanks also for the idea of the cold frame. What do you do if you have a sudden long warm spell in the winter? Do you take them temporarily out of the cold frame?
For example, we had one very warm week here in February, which practically killed several plants. For example Acacia dealbata, Genista madeirensis and some Lavandula stoechas were killed because they immediately started shooting, the terrible frost that ensued destroyed the plants. The Cypripedium was not killed because it was outside, isolated with shredded paper, and raised from the soil.
But what would happen if the Cypripedium were in a cold frame where the temperature goes up to the point where they start to shoot?
-
hello,
I know that nothing will happen after a "short" rising of temps (in our region)
Cyps dont shoot within few days..................
they are insulated with a double layer of bubble foil and shaded with dark foil.
also longer periods of sunshine dont heat the frame...........
the temps dont rise more than 2 or 3 degrees,
I have (wireless) thermometer to control.
the temp is more constant than in the pots , stored above soil ........
cheers
-
hello friends,
after a rainy Sunday the sun is shining today...................
this is the other clone from the SparrowEgg hybrid, made by G. Bergel.
they were made with "reverse parents" passerinum X reginae / reginae X passerinum.
no flowers from the other clone this year, smaller growing with white flowers.

Hi,
Cypripedium Frohnau SilkSun #4 is very beautiful.
Where do you got it ???
Bernd
-
hello Bernd,
I made this hybrid by my own in 2009,
now are the first plants flowering,
(see #1 -#3 in earlier postings)
and indeed this is my favourite.
cheers
-
Super. I am amazed and congratulate!
-
lucky shot......................... ;D
-
Hi Dieter. It is a really nice hybrid. Ulla Silkens is a great grower, but taking it from seed to flowering plants in 4 seasons is still pretty good. Reeeespect, as i my son would say :) When you reach a point where you have some to spare, i'll be interested.
Regards
-
OK Lars,
I will think on you in autunm.
cheers
