A reminder for all those in and around the south-east. If you would like the story of preparations for the Show see the AGS website. Meanwhile a little boxful of saxifrages from Aberconwy to tempt you...
-
Duly tempted ... but Aberconwy are also selling their beautiful plants at Blackpool Show, Tim and that is nearer. Good luck to the organisers of both shows and, of course, to ourselves for our very own EAST LANCASHIRE SHOW at Whitworth, near Rochdale next Saturday 23rd March.

Who could resist ? All with flowers to make the choice more difficult.....
Here's hoping for clear roads and safe journeys for all the show go-ers :D

..... including "The Hoppers". JI2 producers have been working overtime for weeks! ;D

I'd heard that, David - it's that which is responsible for a small but significant "blip" in the UK's manufacturing figures, I'm told!
I know the "Hoppers" come by ferry, but I was really worried when the Channel Tunnel/Eurostar was out of commission earlier this week- I thought the Hoppers might find themselves with snow-blocked roads and cancelled ferries..... would the Rainham Show cope without them, I wonder? :o ::) ;)
Scary prospect!

The weather only had us worried for an hour or so, Maggi - Snow ploughs were on standbye to clear the roads if need be.... no way to stop us !
We wouldn't dream of disappointing our friends in Kent !

I bet Aberconwy don't take any of those Sax's back to North Wales!!!!

Lovely pics, thanks for sharing, looks like you had a great show

Really nice to meet Yann at the Show and to see all those great pictures. For another overview see the AGS website. But really lets get a bit more debate and comment on the Shows there - they are not just the preserve of the judges and wonderful write ups in the Journal; they should be celebrated on the website too... confidence is a personal thing as well as instilled by the judgement of others.
-
I tried to post pictures on ags website but looks like there was a problem in the evening.

"The Butcher"- Alan Newton had an enjoyable day at Rainham- though I think the journey home through torrential rain was not such fun - here are his photos - beginning with the Farrer Medal winning plant.
It is a very smart pan full of Corydalis darwasica, shown by George Elder from Cardiff - his success on the day must have been ofcheer to him after a long trip!

next five -
Hepatica - Japanese hybrid
bench with Corydalis
Dionysia from Hans Kaupert- the cultivar 'Ludwig Jahn'
magnificent Dionysia curviflora from Nigel Fuller plus award for best primulaceae

This one is a bit special- great colour as you can see- and plenty flowers, but what is different is that this Dionysia 'Claire' is the first one Nigel Fuller has named of his raising.
[attachimg=1]
Three of Nigel Fuller's Dionysias - 'Andrew', 'Clare' and 03120-21
[attachimg=2]
Nigel doesn't only show Dionysias- here is his Primula allionii 'Tamara'

a flood of flowers, each more beautiful than the last. The Dionysia are outstanding, such a patience and care to get so sized plants
-
It was once again a splendid show.
Is there anyone who knows something more about Primula allionii ‘Tamara’ (and ‘Emily Jane’) (origin)?
A nursery who is selling this plant or is there anyone interested in exchanging?
-
I am amazed once again by how much I managed to miss! I notice there was no close up of the 'fragrant' Scoliopsis. Nigel Fuller's Dionysia seedlings do look very special, and when I asked Lee Martin how old Nigel's D. curviflora is likely to be, he thought around 15 years or more - that is a very remarkable feat of cultivation.

Helpful details from Jon Evans ( and also, see the AGS website - including pix of another great Trillium nivale and a fresh pic from Graham Nicholls!!)) http://www.alpinegardensociety.net/discussion/atshows//KENT+SHOW+th+MARCH+/17018/?page=3 (http://www.alpinegardensociety.net/discussion/atshows//KENT+SHOW+th+MARCH+/17018/?page=3) and from Harlow show : http://www.alpinegardensociety.net/discussion/atshows//Early+Spring+Show+Harlow+nd+March+/17074/?page=4 (http://www.alpinegardensociety.net/discussion/atshows//Early+Spring+Show+Harlow+nd+March+/17074/?page=4)
P. allionii 'Tamara 'was raised by Nigel Fuller (- possibly named for his grand-daughter) and is probably only available from him - it hasn't got around much, I'm told
P. allionii 'Emily Jane' was raised by David Philbey ( David is Jon Evans' stepfather and was named for Jon's neice) and is now grown by several of the exhibitors, but it may not be available
commercially.

Maggi, many thanks for you help.
