A friend asked me what this shrub photographed on one of the islands off Auckland is. It looks familiar....
-
Looks like Pittosporum crassifolium.

Thanks!
No wonder it looked familiar, I grew one in a pot for several years and I see I have a picture I took of it in the Auckland Botanics (in the Threatened Garden) in 2003...

Has it got dark red flowers, a bit like a Primula euprepes?
Seems it does- found this : http://www.nzplants.co.uk/Pittosporum-crassifolium (http://www.nzplants.co.uk/Pittosporum-crassifolium)
Next question - to myself- is where did I see it in flower to remember that? ??? ::)

That's pretty!!

Similar bushes are quite common round where I live: in parks, borders along paths and roads and car parks, and in school grounds.
