Had a wonderful day today with fellow Galanthophiles at the CGS Snowdrop event.
Carol Klein was filming for Gardeners World, March 2013 and chatted with us as we waited for the doors to open at 10am. Apparently it is usually a more relaxed affair but they wanted a crowd waiting outside to add to the excitement they were creating for the programme.
Inside I didn't feel there was a scrum at all. It was very relaxed and polite, no sharpened elbows were necessary. The talks by Rod Leeds and Joe Sharman were both interesting and informative.
Chas did a piece to camera with Carol so we may see him on screen next month. Will he still speak to us once he's famous ;D Along with Chas and his wife Janet I also met Steve Owen, Alanb, Rob a lurker ;) Wol and Sue and of course Joe and I acquired my hearts desire 'Ecusson d'Or' Ray Cobb and the very fragrant Straffan.
After our lunch Chas and Janet very kindly took me to Kingston Bagpuize where we succumbed to yet another plant stall. I bought Cyclamen Coum to set off my snowdrops and Chas bought miniature Iris. The garden tour was enhanced by the wonderful mild temperature and warm sun on our backs.
Thanks Chas, Janet and Rob for your company today :) Look forward to seeing you next week at the RHS Halls!

It was nice to meet you, Jacqueline. I found a very nice-looking elwesii in the garden at Kingston Bagpuize and managed to draw it to the attention of the owner. It had a green inverted heart-shaped marking on the outer petals; reminiscent of some of the Trym derivatives. The owner (Virginia Grant?) thought it might be similar to another of their snowdrop finds, "Bagpuize Elizabeth", but as that one wasn't in flower yet we could not make a comparison. I don't suppose anyone has a picture of that one? I'll post my picture when I can.
-
@Alan, well that's exciting!! Was it in that area opposite the Church?
Unfortunately I didn't photograph 'Bagpuize Elizabeth" I only took "Marlie Raphael"
-
Yes a very pleasant day and good to meet you Jacqueline, also Maxine
Many other forum users were there also, and now look forward to Vincent Square on Tuesday, where I think forum members and lurkers will be in abundance
-
I will be there on Tuesday ;D
-
Great to meet you too Chas and Mrs Chas :) We had a great day, and thanks to Toby Jarvis and Pamela Lucas for organising such a lovely day ;)
-
Here's the elwesii I found at Kingston Bagpuize. To avoid trampling on other snowdrops I had to take the photo with my camera held at arms length. Now that I can see the photo enlarged, I don't find it quite as pretty as I remember it. But it's stil not bad, assuming it survives and continues to do the same thing year-on-year.

Looking forward to more pictures if you have any.............

Here's Carol Klein filming interviews with the people waiting in the queue for the event to open.
-
Carol should wear one of Emma's hats!

Does anyone know the name of the man running the plant stall at Kingston Bagpuize on the CGS day? I mean the stall outside the house itself. His face was familiar and he was particularly helpful but I cannot think of his name, if indeed I know it.
-
Don't know his name Alan, but I thought somebody said he was from a local Garden Centre??
-
The gentleman I usually encounter is Mrs Grant's regular gardener John (second name unknown).
-
Tonight Gardeners World starts again.
Maybe we can see the report on the snowdrop event with some forumists being interviewed. ;D ;D
Lina.
-
Looking likely Lina as the icon for tonight's program on iPlayer is a double snowdrop
-
Oh no :o lets hope that I end up on the cutting room floor, thought of all the things that I should have said...........................................afterwards
-
I think you're going to be starring in this film chasw ;D
-
What a disappointment! No interview with Chasw, no other forumists (or did I miss them?).
Carol should dig a little deeper in this subject!!
But I should not complain too much, because in Holland the programms are only very commercial and not even close to the level of Gardeners World.
Lina.

I'm there, picking myself up some nice gracilis Yamanlar from the end of Sue and Wol's table.

But blink and you'll miss me! Ridiculous that they were there all day filming and interviewing people and that's all they used!
-
Yes! I found you. Thanks Martin.
I still think the fragment was too short.
I would have liked to see a little more of the stand and the visiters.
Lina.

Typical BBC, what a disappointment. After all that hype with filming the queue, etc. I'm not sure where that programme is going anymore!

That was short!
But I was pleased to learn that you can put t=17m02s at the end of the iplayer link to go straight to that point in the show.
Thanks Martin.

Curious that at 17.10 they say "Galanthophiles go to great lengths to secure their favourite snowdrop" the picture zooms in on Leucojum ::) ::)
-
After the long shot of Wol's sales table (featuring Martin) (with Rod Leeds in the background?) we see a left handed man in a North Face jacket picking up a snowdrop. I think that is at Joe Sharman's sales table, judging by the out-of-focus Eranthis. Then back to a left-handed man handing notes to Wol's left hand. This was presumably shot from around where Martin was standing since Wol is now on the other side of the sales table (i.e. right-of-shot).

John, when the programme is playing on iplayer on the small screen (not full screen) there's a button to click below the screen that says "Link to this". When you click it, you get two options - one to link to the start of the programme and the other to link to your current position (time) in the programme. Click the one for current position then click on "copy the link" and paste into the place you want the link to go (in this case in the SRGC forum post). Clicking on the link in the forum then takes you straight to the point you were at in the iplayer replay of the programme. Simples!

I wonder why it is that the BBC can produce such wonderful Natural History programmes on occasions and yet seems to have such a complete inability to regard plants with the same panache and sensibility (if those two aren't opposites) - at some point the dam must burst and we must get programmes on plants that see them in a more imaginative and personal light.
-
They seemed more interested in spouting endless cliches and daft wikipedia-style "facts" (e.g. - apparently bees are lured into snowdrop flowers to pollinate them because it's warmer inside the flowers than outside. Really?!) than actually allowing the people at the snowdrop day who know what they're talking about to properly inform the viewers.
And the whole tone of the programme these days is just so saccharine sweet, twee and patronising, as if the producers feel that the viewers need to be constantly made to feel all warm and fuzzy and loved by the lovely, lovely warm and cuddly and ever so friendly presenters, and that's more important than the gardening. It's like being smothered in warm honey.
(And for your information, Carol Klein, it's only warmer inside a winter flower than outside when the flower is CLOSED, that being the reason that winter flowers close in cold weather, to help protect the reproductive parts from freezing - when the flowers are open and bees being attracted to them for pollination, it's no warmer inside them than out).

I believe it's something to do with the crew that puts the programmes together, if Gardeners' World were to be handed over to the Natural History department we might get some sense on it.
-
Over the years it has just been more and more dumbed down, they have alienated most real gardeners. It's the same thing every week, dig a hole and put a plant in!!! Geoff Hamilton must be spinning in his grave!!!

To answer my own question, I have just seen that a plant I bought there is labelled Steventon Road Nurseries and a quick search of the web reveals "Steventon Road Nurseries, East Hanney, Wantage - Classic, rare and unusual perennials, grasses and bulbs - Contact: John Graham". The plant I bought was Synthrys missurica stellata. It was in flower when I bought it in February and still has just a few flowers left at the top the flower spikes.
